(AP) — Crew chief Chad Knaus calls himself an innovator in the racing world. NASCAR hasn't exactly seen it the same way. Here is a Knaus timeline that includes penalties imposed by NASCAR:

• March, 21, 2001: Suspended two races and fined $5,000 for using unapproved shoulder harnesses in a car driver by Stacy Compton.
• Oct. 22, 2001: Fined $750 for using unapproved windshield clips on Compton's car.
• Dec. 10, 2001: Hired by Hendrick Motorsports as crew chief for Jimmie Johnson's No. 48 Chevrolet.
• July 11, 2002: Fined $25,000 for having improperly installed mounting bolts. The team also was docked 25 championship points and 25 owner points.
• July 23, 2002: Fined $5,000 for cursing during a live television interview, NASCAR's first sanction for profanity.
• May 21, 2003: Fined $1,000 for using an unapproved air-directional device during NASCAR's All-Star race.
• May 26, 2003: Signed five-year contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports.
• May 27, 2003: Fined $2,500 for using an unapproved refrigerant.
• March 15, 2005: Suspended two races and fined $35,000 because Johnson's race-winning car failed to meet the minimum height requirement during post-race inspection at Las Vegas. The team also was docked 25 championship points, which knocked Johnson out of the points lead.
• March 16, 2005: Appealed suspension.
• March 23, 2005: National Stock Car Racing Commission overturned the suspension and placed Knaus on 90 days of probation, but upheld the fine and the points penalty.
• Sept. 30, 2005: NASCAR changes a rule regarding shock absorbers after Knaus exploited a loophole that caused Johnson's car to fail post-race inspection at Dover International Speedway.
• Feb. 12, 2006: Johnson's qualifying time for the Daytona 500 was disqualified after the car failed a post-qualifying inspection.
• Feb. 13, 2006: Suspended from the Daytona 500 for raising the rear window on Johnson's car to alter the aerodynamics during the team's qualifying run.

well at least he trys. they win to.

Knaus is the best crew chief in the garage... imagine all the crap he gets away with that does end up helping the #48. I'd say they end every year in the + rather than the - as far as points with all the crap he pulls.

OMG.

I am floored. this could be the worst move ever by nascar. i hate the bump drafting in the turns but when they start saying when and where they can do it, it will be bad.

what are they gonna do. start black flagging b/c they THINK they saw someone illegally bump draft.

nascar is gonna continue to go downhill if they keep regulating EVERYTHING.

I HOPE TO GOD I AM WRONG ABOUT THIS. but nascar is killing all the fun. these drivers know the risks and they know how much they are getting paid. if they cant learn to bump draft without it being ENFORCED then they should not be on the track.

PERIOD.

here it is in writing.

NASCAR will post additional officials in the turns at Daytona International Speedway to monitor the act of bump-drafting between cars on the track, according to Robin Pemberton, vice president of competition for the sanctioning body. And left up to make the call, he said Tuesday, officials could penalize drivers for such contact. Pemberton said the officials would begin monitoring the situation beginning with Thursday's Gatorade Duals, twin 150-mile qualifying races that will set the remainder of the field for the Feb. 19 Daytona 500. "I think what we are going to do over the week as the races unfold," Pemberton said, "we may have some zones that we post added officials in where me might be forced to make a call of a bump draft that is unnecessary. The straightaways, obviously, don't appear to be a problem. But we're working on it. We've talked to the competitors about the problem and we may be put in the position that we have to make some calls that we really don't want to make."
The act of bump-drafting occurs when a driver makes contact with his and another vehicle in front of him on the race track with the front bumper of his car. The "hit" is normally used to push the car in front past a car beside it. The practice has become fairly common at Daytona and Talladega, however, following Sunday's Budweiser Shootout, defending series champion Tony Stewart said the act of bump drafting could lead to another death at the 2.5-mile track. As far as penalties are concerned, Pemberton said it could be "a pass through as far as coming down pit road. It could be anything. ... This is a serious matter. "Everybody has to remember, we don't drive these things. The drivers are in control, they have the pedals they can push and the steering wheel they can turn. To leave it in our hands when we're not out there ... they may get a call that they didn't bargain for."(NASCAR Scene)(2-14-2006)

I agree that slam drafting someone in a turn probably isn't the safest thing to do, but how are they going to decide what is bump drafting and what is just barely tapping them? Someone's gonna get screwed over just because they pulled up on the back of someone and barely tapped'em.

They should only black flag'em if they cause a wreck by doing it. Make'em sit in the pits for a few laps or something.

Jimmie Johnson will take out half the field at Daytona doing that crap......he done it at Talladega last year, can't beat em fairly might as well take em out

Anybody going to Daytona this weekend beside me? I'll be in DePalma section C Row 19 on Sunday! The Great American Race is awsome.

Twin (I'm not gonna call them the "Duels") 150 Lineups

Race 1

Race 2

No picks for the Twins?

I like Stewart in the first one... he'll probably win the 500 too. Same car that dominated both Daytona races last year. Jr. oughtta make it up to the top 5, but he didn't sound too pleased with his car today in the practices.

Gordon oughtta dominate the second race, with Harvick finishing second.

Go Ryan Newman, he is my pick to win it all this year. I wont watch much racing, but if I do he is my new favorite driver even though rusty and newman never really got along when they were team mates.... Am I the only one that feels racing is going to be diffrent without rusty at bristol??

These new rules that Nascar comes up with every year are getting more lame. :bad:

They might as well not let Jimmie Johnson on the track at all if they are going to be so strict on the bump drafting. He will take out half the field anyways.

Bristol won't be the same without Rusty. He owned Bristol.

I'll take Dale Jr. in the first one....That one is loaded with people....the reson I am gonna say that I take Jr. is simply because he has all his teammates in that race with him, those 3 hook up you better look out....Like he said, they aren't fast by themselves but they are good in the draft and practice speeds show that

Second one, I would take Greg Biffle....maybe.....that one IMO is a toss up
