With a young team who lacks confidence on the road, I think this team would be better suited for NIT. Get a couple of home games, build confidence and hopefully make it to the Garden.

Okay, let me bring up this point. Ask Shaka Smart what he wanted last year.

Look, let's say we get in the tourney, are we going to go on a run? Most likely no. But the same was said about VCU. They were the third to last team in and had to play in the First Four, yet went to the Final Four. The beauty of the dance is you never know.

I agree 100%.
I kind of hope they don't call our name for the NCAA today.
Just to say we made it 7 years in a row doesn't mean a thing to me.
We need experience.
I'd hate to see this team come out next year with the stigma of knowing they might possibly be able to beat Carson Newman on the road.
NIT is a fresh start and a chance to grow up this season.

Anybody that would take an NIT bid over a NCAA tourney bid does not follow college basketball very much. Actually, based on your post, they would be better suited for an NCAA bid since these are "neutral site" games vs. road games. NIT first and second round games could be true road games on the opposing teams court.

NIT is a consolation prize. You always want to get into the Big Dance

VCU comparison doesn't work.
They won their tourney.

LSU? Florida? I mean, we left a game or two on the table, but we went 3-5 on the road in the SEC. That's not horrible.

I'd say I follow college basketball more than most on this board.
As you saw Friday, neutral site means nothing for this team.
They're a one and done in the NCAA and a contender because of the home games in the NIT.
We need experience more than we need a mercy f*** from the NCAA committee.

I understand your point about having a chance in the dance, but how did we do this year on "neutral sites" games against D1 schools?

Also, we are going to be a high seed on NIT and will play at home for a couple of games.

We need experience and confidence!

Let's be real. Other than LSU we were not good on the road this year.

Kids don't sign with a school in hopes of going to the NIT. The good ones sign with the schools that pretty much know they are going to the dance.
If CCM could tell these kids that we have been to the dance seven years in a row then that is a hell of a recruiting tool.
I'm pretty sure we make it next year, but, I was hoping we would this year more than words can express. In any event we have done enough for CCM to tell kids with enough conviction that we will be there next year.

Played pretty good against Duke and Memphis at neutral site (without Stokes) I'd take my chances vs. NIT any day. I would also take a 1st round loss in NCAA over NIT tourney any day of the week. Nobody cares about the NIT except the 2 teams playing in it.. Sorry...

If you ever participated in sports you would understand that momentum is a heck of a thing. Go to the NCAA and loose the last two games of the year will help? Win the NIT and go into next year with a top 25 ranking and confidence.

I love coach Martin, but he needs to build a tournament resume as well!

I cant believe anybody would take nit over ncaat. The publicity from making the dance helps with recruiting and if it is a play in game the team would be very similar to competition in nit. Do we have a chance to get beat first game, sure. If we make the dance they will talk about how good ccm is and people will actually be watching. I havent seen 2 mins of an nit game since the last time we were in the nit and I watch a lot of basketball. Remember they can still practice in the dance even if they lose.

Considering how few of our players played last year, I would rather get them some "big dance" experience for next year. NIT experience doesn't mean jack. Unless you plan on being a regular in that tournament. Two totally different atmospheres. We have enough experience playing at home and if we made it to MSG, it's not remotely the same as any round of the NCAA tourney.

Again that doesnt happen, got back and look at past nit winners.

AND ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean, people, I get it. We aren't a great basketball team. But seriously, it's all about matchups. If we get in a bracket with teams that are guard oriented, who knows what can happen. We will be a First Four team and will have the advantage of already playing and getting out the jitters.

I'm not trying to say we are bound to upset people, but I know I sure would like a chance.

I agree, We all want to go to the dance, but the the OP said this team is better suited for the NIT and I agree with him, we are not ready for the main floor.

The consolation prize is not ok, but it is better than NO PRIZE ...JMHO :p

Totally agree with you.

Why would someone want to go to the nit over the ncaat? That's like saying you want to go to the little caesars bowl instead of a bcs bowl.

Maybe its just easier to shoot for mediocrity

If you want to be the best, you gotta beat the best. Sure this team is better suited for the NIT. Home games against lesser competition as opposed to neutral site games with quality competition and the pressure of the nation watching you. Using that logic, we are even better suited for the CBI tournament. We could totally gain some confindence/momentum winning that tournament. Won't help us next year though.

Look at 2008 NIT winner Ohio State who was ranked in the preseason 2009 polls. With everyone coming back but Tatum, we will be ranked in top 25 next year if we can prove we can win on the road.
