Vols coach Bruce Pearl gets $200K raise

I agree with that. Rondo's stats are much better at the NBA level than when he was at UK. But that does not take away from the fact that he was an extremely talented player that, as shown through his play in the NBA, that Tubby Smith had at his disposal that was far better than any of our players at that time.

I don't dispute that one bit. :good!:

I never said he was pathetic, nor any good. It was a simple statement, he was not the same player.... which is not a bold statement. His style of play and Tubby ALWAYS clashed, and though he showed great talent and played well, he was not the stat stuffer that he is now.

I know this, I was just jealous we didn't have him, he was smooth and a great assist man in college. While you might criticize and with good points made , I can make the point Tennessee would have gladly had him - as is.

Come on, KY fan, Florida was not 'an NIT team until the two NCs.' They were in the NC game in 2000, and I believe Donovan had them in eight consecutive NCAATs prior to the two NCs.

You want to be a stickler and play it by the numbers, fine. They were in the tourney 7 straight years from 2000 to 2007. However, define for me the difference between the last 6-10 at large teams IN the tourney, and the first 4-6 teams off the bubble and in the NIT. Fact is, there is not much difference. The stats from those years are as follows:

2000- NC game lost to Michigan state
2001- lost in second round to 11 seed Temple
2002- lost in first round to 12 seed Creighton
2003- lost in second round to 7 seed Michigan state
2004- lost in first round to 12 seed Manhattan
2005- lost in second round to 5 seed Villanova
2006- champion
2007- champion
2008- NIT
2009- NIT

Now you can't take the championships away from him, he deserves that credit. But I don't think its a far stretch to say that he underachieved the whole period before 07/08, and definately after. Never making past the second round, and losing to two 12 seeds in the first round is mediocre at best, and WORTHY of the NIT of not actually landing in the NIT.

the guy rode the hell out of one good recruiting class, and squandered the rest. IMO.

Temple made the Elite Eight in '01. Must have been a whole bunch of teams who had no business in the field.

You can't take away 2-1 in National Championship games and 3 Final Fours.

And if he "rides the hell out of another good recruiting class" that will sum up a pretty good career.

I was close. UF made the NCAAs under Donovan each year from 1999-2007. That's 7 straight trips ('99-'05) before the two NCs. After reaching the 1999 Sweet 16 and the 2000 NC game, they did lose on the first weekend the next five years.

Those are some bad tournament results for a five-year stretch, but that still adds up to 4 Sweet 16s, 3 NC appearances, and 2 NCs in his 9 trips. Even UK fans should be borderline delirious to accept that run.

I agree that the last two years haven't exactly made Donovan look elite.

Its just a matter of opinion. Nobody's right or wrong. I think he's somewhat overated and owes some of his success to luck, and others disagree. No big deal. And I don't feel that anything in my post is really "pontificated". Just making points.

Changing pace a little back to the thread topic of BP..... I don't think Donovan or anyone else has beaten a team 112-13 like the orange one did. Thats a beat down.

Yes, our Jewish team is unstoppable!

Really, I think BP is doing this because his faith asked him him to represent. He is having fun. I believe recruiting was partially stalled last week to on campus calls anyway, so some of the time off would not have been productive anyway if personal visits is the criteria.

Somehow they managed to offer Vander Blue despite the distance. Life goes on.

You are totally missin the point Tampa!

Come on! Anything Bruce does is automatically discredited and used as "ammunition" against him. The obsession with him on this board is resounding. They have even come up with remarkably clever quips such as "Tanning Bed Bruce" and "Pearlophiles". The latter being used as a label to anyone who posts anything remotely "pro" Bruce or even "Pro" to the program. If Bruce somehow managed to sign Michael Jordan reincarnated, there would somehow be a negative spin on it.

Why aren't you doing the same?!?!? :)

Obsession? Don't be silly. The man coaches, poorly IMO, the second largest sports team at UT. Of course we're going to discuss him ad nauseum.

Yeah, we're the crazy ones for discussing TCHBBCATUTK in a forum titled Tennessee Vols Basketball.

I'm all for discussing his coaching.
I agree it could be better. But I wouldn't trade it for the Tenn Basketball program I grew up watching.

I've been reading these boards for a couple of years now. Posting for several months. What I've seen in majority is far from discussing his coaching, but rather bashing the guy, his family and his personal life and anyone who shows even a miniscule of support for the Coach or the program.

Come on , BPV. Nothing says "obsession" like discussing Tanning Bed in a thread headed "Vols coach Bruce Pearl gets $200K raise." We need to listen to these basketball experts who can teach us the virtues of bodypaint, self tanner, lack of discipline, and ineptitude in the halfcourt on both ends as the way to hoops success.

In fact, I wish to begin a movement to replace any discussion of TCHBBCATUTK with conversation related to more important Tennessee Basketball issues like three point shots made by Chris Lofton in BF, Turkey, the coming dominance of the SEC by future Hall of Famer and cancer curer Skylar McBee, and Wade Houston's propensity for missing the early portions of practices because he was in his office watching soap operas.
