You want to be a stickler and play it by the numbers, fine. They were in the tourney 7 straight years from 2000 to 2007. However, define for me the difference between the last 6-10 at large teams IN the tourney, and the first 4-6 teams off the bubble and in the NIT. Fact is, there is not much difference. The stats from those years are as follows:
2000- NC game lost to Michigan state
2001- lost in second round to 11 seed Temple
2002- lost in first round to 12 seed Creighton
2003- lost in second round to 7 seed Michigan state
2004- lost in first round to 12 seed Manhattan
2005- lost in second round to 5 seed Villanova
2006- champion
2007- champion
2008- NIT
2009- NIT
Now you can't take the championships away from him, he deserves that credit. But I don't think its a far stretch to say that he underachieved the whole period before 07/08, and definately after. Never making past the second round, and losing to two 12 seeds in the first round is mediocre at best, and WORTHY of the NIT of not actually landing in the NIT.
the guy rode the hell out of one good recruiting class, and squandered the rest. IMO.
