Vols hire Chaney per Multiple Sources

Good post, you did educate me here. It is evident Chaney had talent in 2012. But, Scott and McClendon left in 2009. That was Chaney's second most productive year. So, maybe we can both agree Chaney was effective at OC in 2009 and 2012 when he had his most effective OLs. Tiny wasn't a starter until 2012 as a SOPHOMORE. I am not saying he wasn't good. But, MOST LINEMAN are definitely better their Junior and Senior years after two full years of S & C. Trey Smith and a few other ELITE ones are the exception to this rule. Fulton started in 2011 and 2012, Chaney's last two years. James was a starter as a FRESHMAN while Chaney was there in 2010 through 2012, James' Jr year. Basically, Chaney had at least 2 very good OLs the whole time he was there with 2012 being the best OL roster he had. That was his most productive year as an OC. I think Chaney did do more with less in 2009 and it isn't like we were terrible offensively in 2010, middle of the road. The offense was terrible in 2011. Since, you are the expert. Why was it terrible in 2011?

Bray and Hunter went down, though Rogers was great.

I was most concerned mr qb whisperer couldn't have Simms, as a Senior, ready to come in and be even midly competent. I'm concerned our offense was that 1-dimensional and reliant on a single players.

But I believe Bray still played UF and UGA and what did we score? 35 total points (17.5 ppg).

In total, minus Vandy, we scored 65 points vs 7 SEC opponents that year. That is just inexcusable, especially with a sr qb replacement.

Bray returns still banged up and we score 7 points?!

That season just showed how he didn't have a system that was plug and play. He needed talent or else he sank, as I've said all along.

I don’t post often, but I am here quite often. It is always good to see what the other SEC east teams are up to.

I see your point. You have no reason to trust my opinion. However, I was just trying to give a different perspective. Chaney is a good OC, and I thank him for his time at UGA, but I just don’t think he can get you where you want your program to be. Chaney has failed to make adjustments. At LSU, he failed to make adjustments when LSU disguised coverages pre-snap and Fromm struggled. Likewise, in both Bama games, we scored exactly 7 points in each third quarter and none in the fourth quarter. Chaney tried to kill the clock with 8 minutes left in the third. That is never a good plan.

He will help you guys. He will get you back in the top 15, but he will falter against the elite defenses. 3 years from now, I think you will agree.
And 3 years from now dawg fans will be saying

Next year!
Kirby is the next saban
Nobody wants to play us
We didn't wanna be in that bowl game anyway
They're scared to put us in the playoffs!

I've heard this stuff for 20 years now😁

Or theyve seen 1st hand is uncreative ways.
How do they have #1, #2 recruiting classes, yet #20, #14 offenses? How are they not even top 10?!
Only 1 SEC team has a top 10 offense based on PPG in 2018, which was Alabama at number 2. Georgia was 15 and Missouri 17. Those were the only three SEC teams in the top 30 in PPG. Care to take a guess at why?

The SEC plays good defense week in and week out, and I would venture to guess top to bottom as a conference the SEC has the best defensive teams.

It’s on wiki now

Can you all GTFO of the Chaney thread to fight about the past from 6 years ago?

We will see how your theory holds up in 2019. I hope you are wrong. I think he is a good, possibly elite OC. I do think he needs to be more innovative though.

Making pre snap reads and calling audibles is the quarterback's responsibility, is it not?

If Chaney was killing the clock with 8 mins left in the third like you say then why was Kirby "fake punt" Smart allowing it? Was his head set not working?

If Chaney can get us to top 10 or 15 in three years when his contract is up I think we can consider his tenure a success and we will be left in a much much better situation for the next OC.

You Georgia fans are almost as smart as whoever thought it was a good idea to have that wrinkled face, ankle biting leg humper of a mascot next to a 2000lb bull.

The truth is you all are in relatively the same position as you were when you fired Mark Richt, always underachieving and choking when it matters most.

This was my 1st choice once the Freeze thing fell through! I'm very pleased with this hire! VERY pleased!

One built in advantage with Chaney that no one is talking about is he doesnt seem to be interested in being a head coach. So he could potentially be a "lifer" with this staff so long as he performs well. That bodes well for us in terms of stability, which our program needs! Look at Clemson. The OC staff has been there 4 years, the DC has been there 7 years. That's how you build a winning program! Well, that and recruiting/development.

I remember people talking about Sam Pittman back in the day. Can anyone remind me why he is such a good O-line coach? It seems he has an incredible reputation.

Hey,I was wrong. Where did I leave that crow? Seriously, glad they hired him, shows maybe we ate changing a little bit. I just hope the O can score more than the D gives up each game, that's the only stat I'm interested in.

There are some kindly condescending posts (both from GA fans and VN members) about "he can get you so far, but not all the way." Who knows, if that's true, maybe that's fine: he helps build the Vols back to a top-ten contender in three-four years, and then retires, making room for the next guy. Believe me, I could bank that salary and be ready for some 24/7 fishin' in not too long.

Absolutely thrilled with the hire!

Couple side notes.

Knows what it takes to put points on versus bama.

Even if second halves versus bama and lsu were on him....he strikes me as a guy who would learn from those experiences and adapt.

Even if he IS uncreative we have an Osovet up our sleeve...and even though we didn't want Friend as OC he had a good offense at his previous stop....well be fine between the the three of them.

Thank God they let Pruitt hire someone with a pulse. Still a crazy ride on this hire. I was a Chaney fan while he was here the first time. Sure would be awesome to get Pittman. Looks like UGA media thinks there is no chance that happens though. Of course they didn't think Chaney was leaving either so...

It looks like the final figure is 1.5 million which makes Chaney:
--The highest-paid offensive coordinator in the country.
--The highest-paid assistant coach in the SEC East.
--The 4th highest-paid assistant coach in the SEC.

Good hire but how will this work with Friend. We need somebody to get the line up to SEC playing standards no OC in the world can overcome what we had last season.
