A look at the numbers - Volaska Style
Both AJ Simcox and Christin Stewart had great Frosh campaigns for the Volunteers this past season. Stewart had a BA of .310 and AJ .283. In the best conference, those are great numbers especially for true freshmen. I think we'd all agree on that. For quick reference and to save me from typing:

I did a little more than adopt the Miners logo for my Avy, I actually watched the bulk of the games, I missed about 5 of the 35 they played for the Matsu-Miners of the Alaska Baseball League.
The numbers by themselves are ridiculous, but if you look a little beyond, the consistency is stunning...STUNNING!
The ABL regular season is over.
Simcox led the ABL in batting average at .356, Stew came in second with a .336.
Simcox led the ABL in hits with 48. Stew was second with 42.
Simcox led the league in runs with 27, Stew was second with 26, the next guy had 21.
Stewart led the league in Doubles, 14, nobody else made it to double digits.
Stewart led the ABL in RBI's with 31. He led the Vols last season with 27, but it took 10 more at bats. Simcox tied for second in the ABL with 20.
Stewart was tied for first in home runs with 5.
Stewart did not get a hit 10 times in 35 games.
Simcox did not get a hit 3 times in 34 games. Let me translate...he got at least 1 hit in 31 out of 34 games.
Stewart got 2 hits or more, 14 times in 35 games.
Simcox accomplished that 12 times.
AJ had a fabulous slugging percentage at .422, but what do you make of Stew's? It was a staggering .600!
On base percentage plus slugging percentage, Simcox .825, Stewart, it's ridiculous... 1.016!!! lol.
Are you into Sabermetrics? Runs Created? Stewart led the league with 30.536 and Simcox was second with 22.563.
And after all of that...the numbers don't tell the whole story. These guys were challenged to get better in terms of their quality of at bat. They were challenged to be leaders. Get better at what were their weaknesses. Simcox tied for 4th in stolen bases, but he also led the league with 12 errors, that's down a bit from what he did at UT last season.
In terms of confidence going forward, I believe both AJ and Stew will be better off from their time this summer in Alaska, it certainly can't hurt.
I think it was pretty evident that these two were good players, but based on what I've watched, I think the sky is the limit.
It's been an exciting summer to get to watch these guys almost every night, I just wish more folks would have seen it. These two will be great Vols, I have no doubt.
GBO!
