A look at the numbers - Vincent Jackson

Vjax was one of the more exciting players for the Vols last season. He was one of five true freshmen that played extensively for the Big Orange and he more than held his own.

Jackson was second on the team for extra base hits(14), behind only Ethan Bennett(15). His .290 BA is more than respectable as well. Of the players recording over 100 AB's, only Scott Price struck out less (21) than VJax (23). In 155 AB's, he drew only 6 free passes. He's not striking out, he's not getting walks, so he must be making a lot of contact.

Solely discussing his offense is a disservice because in the outfield VJax really delivers. On more than one occasion he snatched home run balls away from the opposition. He routinely shows above average range. He's exciting to watch and he seems to really enjoy the game.

So, how's Jackson done this summer?

He got off to a slow start, due in part to an injury he suffered towards the end of UT's season. Throw in adjusting to the wooden bats and the rigors of playing everyday with a group of guys you don't know, and there's bound to be some growing pains.

He played his first game for the St. Cloud Rox of the Northwoods League on June 14th and I was watching. In fact, other than the Miners, I watched no other player more. The first few games Jackson really struggled. He was striking out a lot. He would make contact but the ball wouldn't get out of the infield. He was clearly frustrated.

On June 22nd, batting .100 going into the game, he hit his first summer ball home run. From there, he would go on a mini-tear that would top out on July 7th with VJax batting a whopping .367!

Since then, from July 8th to July 25th he's gotten just 3 hits and his BA is down to .247.

He's been invited to play in the 2013 Northwoods League - Big League Dreams Showcase which is legit. He's also been outstanding in the outfield all summer. In 28 games he's committed only 1 error.

As is the case with several of our players, the fact that VJax is still with the team, especially one that's out of contention, says a lot about Vjax's commitment and his ability to battle through the early slump. He's there until August 11th, we'll see if he can battle through this one.

GBO!

Esparza goes 4.2...94 pitches, 60 strikes, 34 balls...8 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 8 SO

He ran out of gas.

SLO Blues (Lee, Maddox and Owenby) are going to the NBC World Series in Wichita. First game, Sat. Aug. 3rd. Congrats!

Class move by Ben Taylor, coach of the Miners. Before AJ's 3rd at bat, he asked the announcers if AJ was above .350 and what it would be if he went 2 for 3. His average at the time of the question was .351. It didn't matter because AJ stepped up and hit his 3rd single of the day! Upon reaching first, he was replaced. Safe to say AJ, will lead the league in BA. AJ with 3 Hits, rest of team 0.

Stew just doubled of the wall, 2 more feet and he'd have the ABL HR title sewn up. Might get another chance.

The Miners beat the ABL Champion Goldpanners in the final regular season game with a 2 out, top of the 9th, come back! 4-3, led by Stewart who was 2-3 with a dbl and 2 runs scored. Miners finish 20-15.

Talk about numbers, whew, gonna keep it to myself for a bit, savor it if you will. REMARKABLE!

A look at the numbers - Volaska Style

Both AJ Simcox and Christin Stewart had great Frosh campaigns for the Volunteers this past season. Stewart had a BA of .310 and AJ .283. In the best conference, those are great numbers especially for true freshmen. I think we'd all agree on that. For quick reference and to save me from typing: http://www.utsports.com/sports/m-basebl/stats/2012-2013/teamcume.html

I did a little more than adopt the Miners logo for my Avy, I actually watched the bulk of the games, I missed about 5 of the 35 they played for the Matsu-Miners of the Alaska Baseball League.

The numbers by themselves are ridiculous, but if you look a little beyond, the consistency is stunning...STUNNING!

The ABL regular season is over.

Simcox led the ABL in batting average at .356, Stew came in second with a .336.

Simcox led the ABL in hits with 48. Stew was second with 42.

Simcox led the league in runs with 27, Stew was second with 26, the next guy had 21.

Stewart led the league in Doubles, 14, nobody else made it to double digits.

Stewart led the ABL in RBI's with 31. He led the Vols last season with 27, but it took 10 more at bats. Simcox tied for second in the ABL with 20.

Stewart was tied for first in home runs with 5.

Stewart did not get a hit 10 times in 35 games.

Simcox did not get a hit 3 times in 34 games. Let me translate...he got at least 1 hit in 31 out of 34 games.

Stewart got 2 hits or more, 14 times in 35 games.

Simcox accomplished that 12 times.

AJ had a fabulous slugging percentage at .422, but what do you make of Stew's? It was a staggering .600!

On base percentage plus slugging percentage, Simcox .825, Stewart, it's ridiculous... 1.016!!! lol.

Are you into Sabermetrics? Runs Created? Stewart led the league with 30.536 and Simcox was second with 22.563.

And after all of that...the numbers don't tell the whole story. These guys were challenged to get better in terms of their quality of at bat. They were challenged to be leaders. Get better at what were their weaknesses. Simcox tied for 4th in stolen bases, but he also led the league with 12 errors, that's down a bit from what he did at UT last season.

In terms of confidence going forward, I believe both AJ and Stew will be better off from their time this summer in Alaska, it certainly can't hurt.

I think it was pretty evident that these two were good players, but based on what I've watched, I think the sky is the limit.

It's been an exciting summer to get to watch these guys almost every night, I just wish more folks would have seen it. These two will be great Vols, I have no doubt.

GBO!
