A look at the numbers - The Other Guys
During the season, as a fan, you end up "getting that feeling" when this guy or that guy comes to the plate, the anticipation that Maddox might drive in the run, that Simcox will turn two, that Stewart might send one to the porch. Then there's the other guys who quietly go about their business in the field, or pulling off the sac bunt from the batter's box. Let's take a look at what those players did for the team last season and check on their summer ball seasons.
Jeff Moberg
Who can forget the moment in the season when Moberg aka Moby was called to the mound versus Kentucky with 2 outs, bases loaded, bottom of the 9th, Vols leading 10-9. He gets the fly out to CF and the Vols get the win, he gets his first and only save. He hadn't pitched all year, heck I'd never imagined that he knew HOW to pitch. When I heard Wilkerson say "Moberg, Jeff Moberg is coming to the mound" ...lol...just gonna be honest...my reaction was "WTF is CDS doing." If you can put out of your mind the three walks and the grand slam that immediately preceded Moberg's appearance, it's one of the best moments of last season.
Moby's Line for UT: .242 BA, 99 AB, 24 H, 12 R, 2 2B, 10 RBI, 10 BB, 19 SO, 4-4 SB, .306 RISP
Moby's Line for GP: .278 BA, 54 AB, 15 H, 8 R, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 4 BB, 4 SO, 2 SB. .339 OB%
Just by looking at the stats you can tell he's worked on the quality of his at bats. My only issue, the thing I'm a bit hesitant about...He got off to a wicked start. Through the first 7 games he had his average up to .414! In the next 10 games he got 3 hits. There could be a couple of reasons for this. You are playing everyday, you get in a groove and if your coach gives you a rest or he wants to play another player it can throw you into a funk. This happened to Simcox at one point but he bounced back pretty quickly. The more logical answer, however, is this...some of the best players, including pitchers are still playing in the CWS and haven't arrived yet. His slump began June 23rd and ended on the 29th, lasting 4 games. In that span he went from .414 to .310. As it sits, he raised his BA 35 points, but I wonder if he played 5 or 6 more games, would it hold or would it drop. If nothing else, as I stated before, he's worked on his quality of at bat which is always good. One more sneaky fact...did you know that Moberg led the Vols in Sac Hits with 12, 1 more than Simcox?
Parker Wormsley
Wormsley aka Worm's value is that he is the traditional utility player. In his two years as a Vol he's played, 1B, 2B, 3B and left and he's been a fairly successful pinch hitter too.
UT : .224 BA, 76 AB, 17 H, 11 R, 1 2B, 9 RBI, 7 BB, 11 SO, 4-5 SB, FP% 1.000
He actually finished his frosh campaign with a BA of .275.
RW : .261 BA, 88 AB, 23 H, 10 R, 5 2B, 8 RBI, 4 BB, 20 SO, 2-2 SB, FP% 1.000
Too many K's, but the rest is pretty much in line with what he's done in his career, he's an Uber Solid Multi Position Fielder. He's not going to hit for power, but he can move players around the path for ya. He made the All-Star Team and the Coastal Plain League is a top league, that's doing all you can do in my book. Solid!
From here there is a list.
Pierce Bily at UT, .260 BA / LA .190 BA
Heath Loyd at UT, .200 BA/ LE .191 BA
Derek Lance at UT, .143 BA/ CS .215 BA
Davis Aiken at UT, .000 BA/ SLO .185
I'm a little surprised regarding Bily. Lance improved slightly and he played a lot of ball this summer on a really good team and Loyd and Aiken have gained some experience. Incidentally, new comer Jonathon Youngblood has been playing with Lance and the Steam, his BA is .152.
These guys need to step up their games.
GBO!
