Vols in Summer Leagues Across Continent

A look at the numbers - The Other Guys

During the season, as a fan, you end up "getting that feeling" when this guy or that guy comes to the plate, the anticipation that Maddox might drive in the run, that Simcox will turn two, that Stewart might send one to the porch. Then there's the other guys who quietly go about their business in the field, or pulling off the sac bunt from the batter's box. Let's take a look at what those players did for the team last season and check on their summer ball seasons.

Jeff Moberg

Who can forget the moment in the season when Moberg aka Moby was called to the mound versus Kentucky with 2 outs, bases loaded, bottom of the 9th, Vols leading 10-9. He gets the fly out to CF and the Vols get the win, he gets his first and only save. He hadn't pitched all year, heck I'd never imagined that he knew HOW to pitch. When I heard Wilkerson say "Moberg, Jeff Moberg is coming to the mound" ...lol...just gonna be honest...my reaction was "WTF is CDS doing." If you can put out of your mind the three walks and the grand slam that immediately preceded Moberg's appearance, it's one of the best moments of last season.

Moby's Line for UT: .242 BA, 99 AB, 24 H, 12 R, 2 2B, 10 RBI, 10 BB, 19 SO, 4-4 SB, .306 RISP

Moby's Line for GP: .278 BA, 54 AB, 15 H, 8 R, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 4 BB, 4 SO, 2 SB. .339 OB%

Just by looking at the stats you can tell he's worked on the quality of his at bats. My only issue, the thing I'm a bit hesitant about...He got off to a wicked start. Through the first 7 games he had his average up to .414! In the next 10 games he got 3 hits. There could be a couple of reasons for this. You are playing everyday, you get in a groove and if your coach gives you a rest or he wants to play another player it can throw you into a funk. This happened to Simcox at one point but he bounced back pretty quickly. The more logical answer, however, is this...some of the best players, including pitchers are still playing in the CWS and haven't arrived yet. His slump began June 23rd and ended on the 29th, lasting 4 games. In that span he went from .414 to .310. As it sits, he raised his BA 35 points, but I wonder if he played 5 or 6 more games, would it hold or would it drop. If nothing else, as I stated before, he's worked on his quality of at bat which is always good. One more sneaky fact...did you know that Moberg led the Vols in Sac Hits with 12, 1 more than Simcox?

Parker Wormsley

Wormsley aka Worm's value is that he is the traditional utility player. In his two years as a Vol he's played, 1B, 2B, 3B and left and he's been a fairly successful pinch hitter too.

UT : .224 BA, 76 AB, 17 H, 11 R, 1 2B, 9 RBI, 7 BB, 11 SO, 4-5 SB, FP% 1.000

He actually finished his frosh campaign with a BA of .275.

RW : .261 BA, 88 AB, 23 H, 10 R, 5 2B, 8 RBI, 4 BB, 20 SO, 2-2 SB, FP% 1.000

Too many K's, but the rest is pretty much in line with what he's done in his career, he's an Uber Solid Multi Position Fielder. He's not going to hit for power, but he can move players around the path for ya. He made the All-Star Team and the Coastal Plain League is a top league, that's doing all you can do in my book. Solid!

From here there is a list.

Pierce Bily at UT, .260 BA / LA .190 BA

Heath Loyd at UT, .200 BA/ LE .191 BA

Derek Lance at UT, .143 BA/ CS .215 BA

Davis Aiken at UT, .000 BA/ SLO .185

I'm a little surprised regarding Bily. Lance improved slightly and he played a lot of ball this summer on a really good team and Loyd and Aiken have gained some experience. Incidentally, new comer Jonathon Youngblood has been playing with Lance and the Steam, his BA is .152.

These guys need to step up their games.

A look at the numbers - Scott Price

I was tempted to stick him in with the "when there are no numbers" edition. That's not really fair. Price led the Vols in batting average last year with a .361. Maddox was second w/a .333.

Now, I was pretty excited to see how he would do in summer ball, I mean you got Maddox going to the Cape Cod League, eventually Team USA CNT, then SLO BLUES...all three great assignments. Heck, Taylor Smart gets a shot as a temp in the Cape Cod too, Smart's BA was.267, nearly 100 points worse than Price's .361.

It didn't hit me at the time...anyhoo...I'm not going to lay his stats out here, but he was at the top of every offensive category save stolen bases...he got picked 6 times. His FP% was a solid .998.

Then he goes down to the Coastal Plain League and plays in 5 games, 19 at bats...that's it. Oh, his BA was .211.

.211

5 starts, that's it?!?

Was he hurt. I hope so. Do I think he was? No I don't. I think he got benched there. I'm hoping someone will actually KNOW and come on here and give us the scoop.

If he in fact got benched, then he would be the biggest disappointment of the summer...BY FAR.
Maybe superlatives are in order :)

Not much more to say about Mr. Price.

Christin Stewart voted MVP last night at the Matsu-Miners team banquet, congrats to Stewie!

Good for Stewart.

Also the catcher discussion earlier reminded me that I forgot that Stewart actually played catcher in high school.

Top 7, Miners up 2-0...they have a half game lead, a win here keeps them up by a game.

Miners lose the game in the Bot. 9th, now they are tied for 1st with the Gold Panners who they play in the last 4 games of the season, one helluva race we have now. Should be fun, Summer Ball, LEGOOOOOOOOOOOBO!

A look at the numbers - Will Maddox and Taylor Smart

You have to go back to 2012 when discussing Maddox. As a true freshmen, he led the team in almost every offensive category and started 54 of the 55 games at 2B. He was the lead off hitter for the final 42 games of the year. He hit .297.

That summer he played for the SLO Blues batting .269 and helping the Blues win the CCL title.

For the Vols in 2013, he improved in every single category but home runs. He hit two in '12, none in '13. He switched from 2B to 3B in 2013. Despite less games and less at bats, his numbers were:

.333 BA, 207 AB, 69 H, 42, R, 8 2B, 2 3B, 0 HR, 20 RBI, 21 BB, 31 K, 22-27 SB, .425 OBP, .391 SLG, .816 OPS, 0 GIDP, .400 RISP

Those are the numbers but not the whole story. He hustles. He steals bases and on those occasions where he gets picked off, as a fan, you have to grin and bare it. It's called "stealing" for a reason, your gonna get caught sometimes.

Obviously Serrano loves this kid. You don't get the Cape Cod, most certainly the CNT assignment without your coach's help. Sure, his numbers are good enough, but CDS put in a word.

Maddox didn't get much of a chance with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. He had only 16 AB and his average was .063. This was the very beginning of summer ball and he got a small taste of what Taylor Smart was going to be dealing with the entire summer...top notch pitching. Maddox would get to try out for Team USA and his Cape Cod time was over.

Despite batting .389!!! for Team USA he would not get to spend the rest of the summer there. It wouldn't surprise me if Maddox gets another shot next year, but what an opportunity that was for a sophomore, right?

So back to the SLO Blues for the rest of the summer. The most traveled UT player of this summer picked right back up like he'd been there all year. He is currently batting .317 and I'll update his final numbers, but hey that's up from .269 last year. Andrew Lee, .265 on the same team right now, Lee will get his own right up later.

Another example of improvement, the difference is Maddox was already good, the best hitter on the team as a freshman, got even better as a sophomore. You can't ask for more than that.

Taylor Smart

Just gonna throw it out there, get it out of the way at the top, .181....That's Smart's average right now and the best he managed all season so far is .236 on July 5th after going 2 for 4 with a Dbl and 2 RBI's. A game by game stat sheet:

Taylor Smart - Cape Cod Baseball League - player | Pointstreak Sports Technologies

The best part of the above paragraph is the phrase "so far". He was a temp player, he had to make the team in the best league. He hit fairly well early on and that was huge, because it kept him in the line up so he could prove his defensive flexibility. By the time ALLLLLLL the big boys had arrived Smart had played 3B, 2B, SS, RF and that my friends is why a guy hitting .181 is STILL playing in the Cape Cod League. Coach wants to see what this guy can do, he can put Smart in over here, etc...That is Smart's value.

Taylor Smart has started more games for the Y-D Red Sox this summer THAN ANY OTHER PLAYER.

That is a heck of an accomplishment. It's also a great opportunity for the former JUCO player and in the games I've watched, 10 of the 32 he's been in, he gave great effort all the time.

In 32 games, playing different positions almost daily, he's had 4 errors.

Last year pitchers gave up the most HR's in CCL history. A mini firestorm ensued over the balls that were used, blah blah, I don't know the details, but that kind of production was to be stopped lol. I've watched a lot of baseball this summer and the best pitching on the whole is in the Cape. Do not fret over Smarts' BA. Don't.

When the announcer says "now batting for your Red Sox, from the University of Tennessee, Taylor Smart" you can be proud because this kid flat out REPRESENTS!

It continues. Last night Dalton Saberhagen threw 6 innings. He allowed 1 hit, no runs, no walks, and got 3 K's in picking up his 7th win of the summer. He is 7-0 which leads the league. Through 57 IP his ERA is 2.68.

On Tuesday Charpie came on in relief. He worked 3 innings (most of the summer).

3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 SO

He's been closing all summer, this is his first relief work. This outing drives his ERA up to 5.84

Drake Owenby last night 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO

17 Pitches, 12 Strikes, 5 Balls

current ERA 1.11

In the ABL the race is between 3 teams and right now the Miners have some work to do.

Alaska Goldpanners - 20-12 (.625)

Anchorage Bucs - 20-13 (.606)

Matsu-Miners - 19-13 (.594)

I would be absolutely shocked if Bettencourt doesn't pitch tonight because it's DOUBLE HEADER FRIDAY! First game is at 9 PM, second game scheduled for 11:30 PM. Both games against the first place Panners. If you haven't watched a game this summer, this is the time to check out AJ, Stewie and BCourt in action.

The LA Brewers (Bily, Schultz) have clinched their division. In the other division, the SLO Blues (Maddox, Lee, Owenby) are tied for first with the Foresters. There is one game left for both teams, the Blues play the Conejo Oaks (D. Saberhagen) tonight at 8 PM, the Foresters play the Halos, also at 8 PM.

The CCL Tournament begins on Saturday.

Eric Martin (Cincinnati Steam) is listed as the probable starter for the second game of double header tonight vs. the Licking County Settlers. 6:35 start time

Eric Martin tonight: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 SO

Martin gets the Win, his record is 4-0, his ERA is now 1.64. That's the last regular season game, the Steam can do no worse than tie for first. They qualify for a bye, and don't play again until Wednesday.

Congrats Eric!
