Yeah, I had heard rumors that Nutt was not going to remain head coach if he did not sign Mustain. That was supposed to be his saving grace. If he does not start Mustain and the Hogs struggle he will probably not be the only SEC coach looking for a new job at the end of the season.

They were painfully young last year. By the end of the year, they were showing signs of considerable improvement. Also, I think Houston Nutt is very underrated as a coach.
i can't believe it....i agree with you. whoda thunk it? ARK is very capable of finishing 2nd. the comment about being young is dead on. they will get overlooked by some teams early on, and our trip to Ark late in the year could be a lot tougher than many will think it is right now. Someone also said they will have the best backfeild in the conf.....don't know about best, but i do believe certainly top 2 or 3. UGA on paper should have a good ground game as should Auburn and LSU...but ARk with their o line should be in the top two for sure.

They will give Southern Cal all sorts of problems in September.

Give me a break, if anything, he's overrated as a coach....

Exactly. That's why LSU, Nebraska, and Colorado all tried to hire him. He's terrible.

overrated, underrated...i don't know..i do think he's a better coach than he gets credit for...having said that, he wouldn't be my first choice as a hire, even knowing what i know about him. but for Ark, he's been good. He went to school there, he's recruited OK there, and they've had some success. nothing to scream and shout about mind you, but historically speaking, ARK has, except for last year, not usually been a dormat in the SEC. they've won the West, what twice?

and i do think they'll be much improved this upcoming season....

One of their Western Division championships was under Danny Ford.

Everyone makes mistakes, even LSU, Nebraska and Colorado.

Whether the talent level is up, or down, Arkansas always comes to play a tough and physical game for sixty minutes. That's all you can really ask of a team. That they do it so well so often is a credit to Nutt.

The Vols almost always know they've been in a battle after an Arky game.

If you think "he's a better coach than he gets credit for," doesn't that put you squarely in the camp that thinks he's underrated?

i don't know....when i think of Houston Nutt, i don't think he's overrated, because i've never really heard overly glowing remarks about the guy, and i don't think he's underrated, because i've never really heard any overly awful remarks about him either. it's usually somewhere in the middle. I think he's a good coach, maybe a tad above average at best?

as far as he's a better a coach than he gets credit for, i say that only because the talent levels he's had, while they aren't completely devoid of any talent there, isn't the same across the board as some of the other schools in the league, so he's done a lot more with less than some others....so underrated, ok, but not severly underrated....it's not like people have been tearing the guy down, and he has had some high profile job looks in recent years...so there are some out there that have a fairly high opinion of him.

Here is Arkansas' records under Nutt...

1998 - 9-3
1999 - 8-4
2000 - 6-6
2001 - 7-5
2002 - 9-5
2003 - 9-4
2004 - 5-6
2005 - 4-7

He's only won 2 bowl games out of 6 and has only gotten his team to the SECCG one time and Georgia beat their heads in.

No way is he underrated...

Keep talking. I can't wait to reference this post on September 3rd and November 12th.

i think that's what makes him "underrated". to be underrated, you have to have a perception of not being up to standard. Given the talent he's had to work with, minus the last two years, i think the previous 6 under a lesser coach, would have looked more like the last two.
