Volunteer behavior getting national attention

Vol fans' passionate tweets prompt some national criticism | wbir.com

Please think twice before you hit "send", "submit", or "tweet it".

Proof that while the first amendment comes with some protected freedoms, certain speech being one of them, we are supposed to exercise some caution and accountability when given a voice.

I have read some things, today especially, that make me wish that some people would hang up their orange. Sad day when a potential assistant coaching candidate, who played for our school, gets harassed on twitter. We should have seen it coming when our new coach got a dose of it as soon as he took the job.

Absolutely terrible.

Websites like Volnation, in turn, are a double edged sword. It creates a good outlet for some fans who want to learn and mingle with others who support their team but it also creates an echo chamber for the sort of nut-job who harasses former players, recruits or others using social media.

Let's all show some class and perhaps a little accountability for our fellow Vols when we see them flying off of the handle.

This is exactly what you get when you give over-reacting, uneducated, entitled people access to social media where they can hide behind their computer and voice their personal opinions without any consequence.

They are stupid, but think they are "passionate"

Not VFL, and a traitor

I agree......tee should have not courted tennessee and crossed the country with family in tow unless he was taking the job... He is here or I am here what did that statement mean. Bad situation.....add to the fact it was another loss to the jacka$$ of all time lame... Powder keg.....it's his choice can't do anything about it but again we were toyed with by Tee, Gruden and lame.... Frankly I am tired of being whored out....reminds me of the ambles recruitment......next time tee save us time and a buck by just calling and saying no...

You do realize that there literally could have been 100's of reasons that it didn't work out? Perhaps he came and his wife didn't like it. Perhaps he came and he didn't like Butch. Perhaps he came and realized that he could never live up to the expectations of the sort of fan base that would tweet him such awful things if he didn't take the job.

Paranoia comes from lack of confidence. When did people who call themselves "Volunteers" lose any sense of what that word and tradition actually mean?

There is no excuse for some of the BS that goes on on this site. I will say it again, the loss is tee martins, not UT'S . If he wants to go down in flames with surfer dude rather than come home, so be it. :swoon3:

As if we haven't been embarrassed enough on the field. People that do this are the scum of the earth. Leave the man alone.

I have to agree with you on that. I know the last 5 years have been rough but really what drives this fanbase to react the way we do sometimes.

But are we the worst of them though? Show me a more irrational and outspoken fanbase than us.

I saw a sports show a few weeks back that said one reason UT might not be able to get a "top tier" coach is because of the fans. I brought that up on VN and got crucified.

Georgia, next question. Who cares if Tee got some tweets? He has a street named after him and should expect a little backlash when he is courted publicly by the school that made hime famous. We are over-reacting to the over-reaction.

IMO You take the Tennessee football program and you look at it's fan base. If somebody was to ask me what I thought led us to where we are now and I would say years of our football program slowly declining finally caught up with us. You look at Tennessee from 99' through 2008 under Fulmer I think the frustration started building. By the time Fulmer was let go this fan base had done lost a lot of hope with our football program. In 2009 you bring in Lane Kiffin this loud out spoken guy who just seem to rattle off at the mouth. Kiffin to this program was like a shot of energy to a dead football. His departure happen like it did really sent the frustration into high gear. Then you bring in Dooley somebody that was in over his head from day one. All the things that we went through during his 3 year tenure. LSU, North Carolina and all the second half debacles and the blow outs etc.. Inside the last 5 years as things have really went south the media and everybody outside of the Tennessee family keep saying Tennessee done, they will never rebuild and they start listing all these reason why. I just think that some of the fan base has listened to this so much that who ever we can get that going to turn it around we just embrace to the fullest and when they turn us down it basically just adding to the frustration and anger at the fact we are not a successful program any more.

I think the people who are getting overly emotional about it should probably take a step back from the computer and simply come back when the coaching staff is completely built.

Or just don't come back.

Hate to say it but of course you're going to get crucified over that. Look at the football forum. This thread is a shining bastion of reason.

I'm damn ashamed of all the hillbilly sidewalk fans ruining the beauty and excitement of being a Vol.
