War in Ukraine

Glide bombs - not HIMARS - killing mobile Russian MSTA arty in the South lines. RF counterattack fail. Bigly.

Actual boom boom... of note multiple other sources confirm GLSBs not HIMARS here.

There was a popular WW2 song "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" ... with anyone but me. The Ukrainian War version would be "You Can Sit Under Ukrainian Skies" ... with anyone but me. Ukrainian drones have got to be demoralizing to Russian troops. Drones as spotters, drones as weapons, and drone mini bombers, and it seems no place to hide from them. And now targeted glide bombs.

Leaders whose countries are in great shape generally don't start wars.

That FP article link at the bottom is interesting. I disagree with the premise, though, as it doesn’t seem they account for Putin’s dwindling inner circle and what those who have been expelled from it may be able to do to remove him from power. They cannot win this thing unless VP does the unthinkable. Then they lose anyway.

going to be interesting to see how armored vehicles evolve. With IEDs you had to armor the bottom, and figure out how to deal with the blast force (V shaped hulls). now with drones seems like we are going to have to see a similar but opposite approach.

"lasers" and better proactive armor.

That's what happens in war. Frankly, we should be thanking Ukraine for giving our military unbelievable intel on how to counter these new threats without ever having to put American sons and daughters in harms way.

Money well spent.

Precisely. @TNVOLNAVY whines all the time about our government spending, yet I'm sure he smiles all the way to the bank with his social security checks.

Lasers are in the pipeline.

Army short-range air defense laser prototypes take down drones at Yuma

April 13, 2023

Downed drones littered the battlefield at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona during a live-fire test of the Stryker-based Short-Range Air Defense system prototypes with 50-kilowatt lasers, according to the director of Army’s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office.

“When they got out on the range, they were knocking targets out of the sky, Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 [unmanned aircraft systems],” Lt. Gen. Robert Rasch said told Defense News in an interview. “Very, very effective.”

While the lasers made short work of drones, some challenges remain in taking out rockets, artillery and mortars, he said.
