I think Putin dug himself a hole. I don't think it was a war that Russia needed, they had a nice frozen conflict that has worked out well for Putin in the past. But officially sending the troops over made it a win-or-else situation.

Ras would dance around the hypothetical, but even he would have to admit that IF Putin lost, or didn't win big enough, Putin's days are numbered. With the amount of resources devoted he has to get a clean win. Bleeding Ukraine won't be enough for the people at home. For all the war hawks they will want serious territory, and not just land they held in 2014. For any of the peace seeking Russians a bloody war with no clear win would be a Vietnam situation. no real threat to the home front, but draining the nation of important resources. Any real sign of weakness and the other oligarchs will see an opportunity, because Putin has so many resources tied up in Ukraine, he has less at home to threaten others with.
