War in Ukraine

Germany to send Ukraine weapons in historic shift on military aid

Germany on Saturday reversed a historic policy of never sending weapons to conflict zones, saying the Russian invasion of Ukraine was an epochal moment that imperiled the entire post-World War II order across Europe.

The decision was an abrupt change in course, coming after Berlin clung to its initial position for weeks despite the rising Russian menace and pressure from EU and NATO allies.

On Saturday, Berlin finally bowed to that pressure, and to the reality that Russia is encircling Ukrainian cities and threatening to topple the government in Kyiv.

From its own stockpile, the German government will send 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger anti-aircraft defense systems to Ukraine. The government has also authorized the Netherlands to send Ukraine 400 rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

So Russia is rolling up these bad boys to try and get some momentum back. Unguided MLRS thermobaric rockets. Against a densely populated city. If the bastard uses these against Kyiv he needs to be hung up by his small ball sack while the citizens of Kyiv beat the MFer to death. Then hang his dead ass in downtown Kyiv and let it rot.

Did the spineless SOBs ask for their 5000 helmets back since they’re now sending (supposedly) real aid? They could then sell those to pay their increasing Russian gas bill I guess.

Pentagon answers Ukraine's plea for more anti-tank Javelins: Department of Defense says it is sending $350 million of hardware from its inventory to help Ukrainians battle Russia, but won't say if it includes Stinger anti-aircraft missiles

A Pentagon official said Saturday that Javelin anti-tank missiles were part of a new $350 million package of military hardware being sent to help Ukrainian troops hold off invading Russian forces.

The military assistance was authorized by President Joe Biden a day earlier, bringing the total amount of help to $1 billion over the past year.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said it would come from U.S. inventories 'including anti-armor, small arms and various munitions, body armor, and related equipment in support of Ukraine’s front-line defenders facing down Russia’s unprovoked attack.'

Ukraine has been desperately asking for more Javelins as well as Stinger anti-aircraft missiles as its forces battle Russia's tanks, bombers, helicopters and missiles

A Pentagon official told reporters that Javelin anti-tank weapons were part of the package but declined to say whether Stingers were included, according to Defense News.

The remaining Chernobyl units have been down for 20 years. When it originally melted down, it killed probably 200 people, less than 1000. Any mentions of Chernobyl by the media is fear mongering. There's much bigger threats to life than Chernobyl right now.

It's why I can't help but be skeptical about any reporting coming from Ukraine. My gut tells me this will not end well for Ukraine. We are only a few days in, and not every attack is shock and awe or blitzkrieg. They could just be probing with different lines to find out where they will be most successful, and to do the least damage for a long occupation.
Chernobyl is currently contained in a "sarcophagus". I don't think breaking that would be a good idea. I'm not a nuclear engineer, so I'm not an expert on the subject, but I'd think that would be bad.

Ukraine's SECOND Tiananmen moment: Local man climbs on top of Russian tank before kneeling on the ground in bid to stop military convoy as Putin's men face fierce fight back on the streets

Another brave Ukrainian civilian has been captured on video trying to single-highhandedly block the advance of a Russian military convoy - in scenes reminiscent of Tiananmen Square's 'tank man' blocking Chinese forces in 1989. We still don’t need our boots on the ground. The US attempted National building again and failed in Ukraine. To call Ukraine a democracy is a farce no matter how much money we pumped into them.
All the national players are engaged in nation building. I think the evidence shows this was not a failed democracy, it is sticking in the face of foreign invasion. In fact it was succeeding so well Putin could have begun to lose it all.... Hence the invasion.

While I agree we should not put American boots on the ground I would posit we don't even need to. We arm them and create a no fly zone and Putin is done, his advance will bog down.

We are going to have to stand up to him in some way, maybe in direct armed conflict in the future, may be best to do it this way, now.

Protests are Pouring in! Hundreds of bars and liquor stores across US and Canada are dumping Russian vodka in show of solidarity with Ukraine

The protests are pouring in.

Hundreds of liquor stores and bars across the U.S. and Canada are removing Russian vodka and other Russian-made alcoholic beverages from their shelves in protest of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

A friend of my girlfriend posted on Facebook that she caught a flight back to a country near Ukraine, and is now entering Ukraine to meet up with her mother. Apparently, her husband was already in Ukraine. Of note, this is a 30-something year-old woman with 2 young kids, yet she felt compelled to go back to her country to do what she could to help.

Ukraine is going to win this war.

I don't see them ever capitulating. They may lose the conventional battle phase of this war, but they are going to resist via an insurgency until the Russians eventually quit.

Could be months or years, but they're gonna fight until the bitter end.

Putin will rue the day he invaded Ukraine. Russia will pay with blood.

Ok this is going too damn far. Wasting good Vodka FFS?!

I didn't know there was such a thing as good Vodka. Every time I've ever drank even a single shot of it, I've ended up with a headache.
Then you didn’t drink GOOD vodka. There is actually a Texas label that’s tasty. Tito’s. Try a good vodka ice cold in a shot glass. Good stuff.

Super complicated and messy situation, that.

The Russian Court for a few centuries were actually ethnic Germans, unlike the people they ruled. Their constant marrying out back to the fatherland kept them involved in conflicts they really had no place in.

Actual Russians haven't been running Russia all that long on the grand scheme of things, just a little over 100 years in this most current stretch.
Up until Catherine deposed her husband I think the Romanov’s had a fair bit of Russian blood in them. I know they were extremely German after that

Just watched an interview on Skynews with a former prime Minister of Finland. He said it was just a matter of time before Finland was a part of NATO. Said he expected Sweden to follow. He said he felt the world totally aligning against Putin will spell the end to him. He said regardless of what happens in Ukraine, that Putin's days were numbered and Russia would remove his regime internally. He basically said they won't have a choice.

If Putin was worried about Ukraine being NATO, I wonder how he's going to feel about that huge border Finland shares with Russia?

I'm sure that's why he's been Saber rattling about both Finland and Sweden.

Also, putins actions have had the opposite effect. Probably hasten both countries desire to join.
