War in Ukraine

They can easily reach Ukraine with nukes from Russia so I don't think this changes much.
Yeah, it doesn’t make sense at all. But maybe they’re thinking if Belarus launches a nuclear strike, then the world can’t blame Russia. I can’t wrap my head around it. How long before this turns into a regional war?

It seems like the only way out of this in the short term without further escalation is a peace agreement where both sides can claim victory. But it will require Putin to move off at least one of his demands: no sane country next door to Russia is going to agree to disarm. Maybe an agreement to stay out of NATO for X years gives both sides enough to claim victory.

Putin is a fool. That is why he will **** this up, but he is a heavily armed one.

in the meantime... Belarus appearently cracked down on their protesters. Arrested something like 600 already and beat them. It's been confirmed that they shot a missile that hit the airport.

Russian central bank restarts gold buying

The SPDR Gold ETF has gained 5% in February as the S&P has dropped 3%

Gold is getting further support rising above the $1,900 level, a fresh 52-week high, as of late Sunday as U.S. equities see more volatility amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Russia's Central Bank indicated it will dip back into the precious metals market.

"From February 28, 2022, the Bank of Russia resumes the purchase of gold on the domestic precious metals market. The purchase price of gold will be determined daily based on the morning price of the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA Gold Price AM)" a notice read on the bank's website, translated.

Russia claims to have control of the airport. Is Belarus shelling the Russians?

They don't understand the larger point. Or don't want to acknowledge it.
-That the federal government put energy standards in place for 2030 that are not reachable with any known technology?
-That there are no existing hypothesis for a technology that can meet those goals?
-that artificially ruining our current energy situation, at the same time improving the enemy’s energy situation will somehow give us the ability to pull that technology from our collective asses?

The larger “point” is that to say “necessity breeds…..” anything at this “point”…..this artificially created “point” is in fact stupid

The problem with that is that Putin, with some justification, isn't going to believe a mere promise. It would have to include a lot of conditions.

us warns russia is "ready to go" on cnn. they have kyiv and several cities surrounded, and reports (second hand unconfirmed) are that military jets were launched from Belarus. They are going to make a hard push tonight. a naval town of about 100,000 on the coast fell to russia earlier.

No, that higher gas prices eventually will price in the economy of energy alternatives that are no economically viable. And I think over time what we see in such situations is that as producers prepare to fill that need, the costs come down. See e.g. battery technology for EVs.
