War in Ukraine

Gingrich Predicts ‘End of the Post-World War II System’ — ‘We’re Going to See a Much More Violent World’

During an interview that aired Sunday on New York WABC 770 AM radio’s “The Cats Roundtable,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich predicted that Russia ramping up aggression toward Ukraine means “the end of the post-World War II system.”

Gingrich told host John Catsimatidis that “we’re going to see a much more violent world” and warned China would try to seize Taiwan after seeing how weak the West is.

“[Vladimir Putin] is a little bit like a gambler who he’s going to push see what the reaction is,” Gingrich advised. “If the West is as weak as it seems right now, he will push again, probably against the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — maybe against Poland. He really wants to destroy NATO and drive the U.S. out of Europe. And he sees that as his job.”

“In the case of the Germans, China is their biggest export market now,” he continued. “I mean, they sell more BMWs and Mercedes and Volkswagons in China, and Russia is the source of their inexpensive energy. So, the two great dictatorships both have huge pieces of the German economy. And the Germans are not going to risk that over something … like Ukrainian independence, which the Germans don’t care about. The … great danger right now is that Xi Jinping in China is going to watch how weak the West is and decide the point has come to seize Taiwan; that while we’re busy worrying about Ukraine, that that’s the right moment for China to take back what it considers its 19th province. All of this means the end of the post-World War II system, which had successfully maintained the peace worldwide for some 77 years. And I think now that we’re going to see a much more violent world and a lot greater dangers, and we’re going to see the dictatorships being much more aggressive.”

Newt is a smart guy (though funny enough he once told me personally that one of the smartest guys he knew was Bill Clinton back in the day :p) and has a deep grasp on geopolitical strategy. I usually take what he says with some deep consideration. He does like to hear himself talk though (but then, so do I).

But smart people can be blind in some areas. Case in point, the guy whose show he is on there - Catsimatidis, a NYC billionaire who I also know personally (though we are not buddies or anything sadly). Cats is a frightfully smart businessman but in many ways, still thinks like the greek grocer he once was. His political foray into NYC which could have been a rare success was a disaster because he thought he was smart in every area and also because he listened to people he trusted who really were only in it to get his money.

Did anyone think Bill Clinton was dumb?

I'm not sure Putin is leading Russia in a week. He can't save face at this point. He stays in Ukraine and things just get worse for the Russian economy. He pulls out and it's all for naught, with years of sanctions that will decimate the economy for years as long as he's in power. Russia's best option seems to be to remove Putin and his cronies and pray for forgiveness.

No, but when the guy I have always thought was one of the smartest analysts in politics tells me that the guy HE thinks was the smartest is Bill Clinton. That surprised me. This was a convo in a private room with just myself and another guy so its not like it was for public consumption. IIRC the actual comment was something like "Bill Clinton was always the smartest guy in the room of any room he was in and that included when I was there." I have talked with him a couple of times and to hear him say that was unusual, especially considering their history together. I always thought Newt was the smarter one but Bill did a good job adopting many of Newt's policy stances economically and thus was able to do well. Bill Clinton was always a very smart and extraordinarily gifted politician. Amazing speaking chemistry with people. Anyway, it was just a surprise to hear it from him. I cant remember if that was when Hillary was still Senator or when Newt was running for 2012. Its been awhile.

Battery production is currently horrible for the environment and so far more damage than they save over gas/diesel.

Artificially inflation of traditional energy won’t suddenly make battery production good for the environment or stop the slave labor currently mining the lithium

But I digress

Yep, and we haven't even really touched on the production and disposal issues yet because electric vehicles are still extremely limited. The next is what drives the equipment to mine and manufacture if not fossil fuel; something has to power the electric grid, and the grid will have to generate and deliver a lot more power than it does or seems capable of doing. In the end we are just converting and transferring energy in one form or another to the end use, and thermodynamics absolutely promises you lose on every conversion and in transmission. Still seems better in most instances to use fossil fuels in most motive operations. Most analyses used to justify changes appear pretty dishonest. Some recent studies are showing what many of us thought to be true all along is that ethanol production causes more pollution overall than it saves in cars.

when I first started perusing this thread, I was just scanning it for the info primarily from Twitter. But turns out there were a lot of emerging storylines here.

I don’t know which one is my favorite:

1 - BowlBrother working overtime trying to ensure any negative domestic political fallout was not directed at Diaper Joe

2 - Ras being isolated as a Russian traitor

3 - Deep thoughts from Double Deez

4 - Septic being rational.
