War in Ukraine

‘A Moment Of Truth For Europe’: European Parliament Greenlights Ukraine Bid To Join EU

The European Parliament voted on Tuesday to accept Ukraine’s application to join the European Union (EU) after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a passionate speech before the body.

Zelensky formally signed an application to join the European Union on an expedited basis on Monday after making repeated to calls to allow his country to join the bloc. Zelensky’s calls have received vocal support from some already in the bloc, including the countries of Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

This is huge. And amazing.

I’ll say it again, this is happening precisely because Ukraine is not part of NATO.

If NATO said no to Ukraine just to avoid bloodshed, then where does it end? What if Russia said Poland needs to leave NATO or we will invade? Should NATO kick them out to avoid bloodshed there too?

At the end of the day Ukraine is a sovereign nation and NATO is an independent organization. Russia doesn’t have to like it but blaming NATO here for not capitulating to Russia as the cause of this war is one of the dumbest takes I’ve seen. This is on Russia. They don’t invade and we don’t have war. Period. End of story.

Exactly; it's the same argument that killing Solemani provokes Iran, that bracing Asian totalitarians would start WWIII with China, Iran...or...or...North Korea...or someone(!!).

Usually you'll find an anti-American leftist or Libertarian spouting such cowardly deference even when Soleimani is responsible for hundreds of attacks on American/ally troops, when China is attempting to choke off international thoroughfares, choke out Taiwan, and choke out the U.S. and the West, and NK is unimpeded on the nuke path. FFS, it seems the only time America can take action on it's behalf is when their ICBMs penetrate our airspace.

If this gets bombers into Ukraine, I approve post haste.

All dude said is this is BS and you feel the need to give him a hard time. Drop the tough guy s***. I don't have any reason to believe you're the badass you think you are.

I never proclaimed to be. But if your country is being invaded, women, and children likely killed, many of whom you may know or who may be relatives...tweeting about it isn't the answer.

Especially if you're a 25 year old man. I would hope the vast majority of 25 year old men facing such circumstances would take up arms rather than tweet.

Is that unfair?

Get your ass over there and defend freedom.

Edit: seriously, why is it a problem for you that he sent out a tweet? Should he not voice his opinion? Can you not have an opinion if you're not in the s***? Maybe you went to Iraq or Afghanistan, maybe you didn't, either way you're allowed to have an opinion on those issues.

Seriously, it's not my country nor have I ever claimed it to be. That's the difference. If it was and if I did, then yes, I should get off my ass and go over there. That would be a reasonable expectation. It's a far better solution than playing soccer and tweeting.

Should he not voice his opinion? When have I said I have any issue with his opinion? That's not the problem. He has an opinion we would all agree with (Putin is a thug and he hopes he dies), the issue is the lack of action. Not the opinion.

Serious question. Who's job do you see it as to defend Ukraine? I would argue it's up to the able bodied citizens of Ukraine, especially young healthy men.

You're full of it. You go after the guy for his opinion. Did you have opinions in Iraq or Afghanistan? Probably. Did you fight there? Probably not.

You ignored the question. Who's job is the defense of Ukraine?
I just don't accept the premise. You don't like him posting his opinion because he's not fighting. You dont seem to have fought in other conflicts, but I think you can have an opinion on them.

I know this isn't specific to Ukraine and the Russia attack but I found this entertaining as to military spending throughout modern times.

I like the Heart of Iron 4 music. Note military spending can sometime be misleading. Some countries for example spend a lot on VA benefits while others spend nothing. Some spend on research, some on equipment, etc. It isn't always quite black and white on how money is spent.

I have no issue with the opinion. The opinion is right. I don't need to mention my military experience to have an opinion here, but since you argue like a 12 year old, here.

Now I will admit it's possible I made this story up 8 years ago in case one day I encountered someone with such a juvenile perspective that they believed only veterans can have an opinion on such things.

Do you now intend on telling me who is responsible for defending his country if not the young able bodied male population that he clearly belongs to?

You'll never answer right, and you'll be hounded with a single-minded intensity until you hit the Ignore button. I have only ever ignored one person here. You're finding out why right now.

The same doofus that compared cops to nazi soldiers in another thread.

I haven't told you who is responsible for the defense of anything. You assume I have because I dont agree with your take that he should sneak into Ukraine via secret routes and fight as untrained mercenary.
All I've told you is its BS for you to give him a hard time for saying this whole thing is BS. I doubt you'll ever understand.

The same doofus that compared cops to nazi soldiers in another thread.

My comparison was that both are agents of the state who hide behind the excuse of "just doing our job". That's a valid comparison. There's differences sure, but the point is that your job does not excuse you from the morality of your actions. Thus the reason I mentioned cops, pimps, drug dealers, and nazi soliders in the same post.
