They are worried that they might loosen the noose Putin put around his own neck enough for him to slither out.
Now that it is obvious the he is hanging himself, they view their best move to be that of an onlooker.

Did anyone tell Zelensky that the US was turning down these planes? If they didn't, then that blows that BS you are talking about out the water, because Z was just out here begging for planes... not setting a trap for Putin.

They thought he was the kind of guy to bust your nose if you took a swing at the U.S. and would not be intimidated into concessions that a weaker president might. That's a downside re: the NATO alliance, what Thatcher phrased as "Consensus is the death of leadership".

I'm willing to bet that even if he did show the same level of outrage and concern that he was in the minority. Everyone wants to virtue signal over Ukraine just because their favorite bad guy is on the scene, yet when the US does it, the overwhelming majority of people are silent.
