War in Ukraine

Blackmail is just a game of moving boundaries. If people show they won't hold one line, it just changes to new demands. Give an inch, and the blackmailer will take a mile. Eventually you reach the point where you won't stand for something, and then you stand for nothing. It's pretty obvious that some past presidents - Reagan comes to mind - would have handled this situation far differently than Joe Chamberlain.
So at what point does holding a hardline posture begin to draw diminishing returns? The very people sitting back and encouraging a hardline posture (The US) are the ones with the very least to lose in all of this. It will be Ukraine, Russia and Europe losing out on all of this if a reasonable solution is not met.

Seems like NATO is a treaty, and whatever a president does still should require senate approval. We have and need checks and balances for a reason. Of course, congress keeps diddling with rules and screwing the thought of checks and balances because it's harder to pass stuff with a 2/3 or 3/4 majority - a big reason why periods of insanity in congress come back to bite us in the ass frequently.
I thought I was clear in my statement, but apparently not. I am saying now for the 3rd time that I am unsure/on the fence about the truthfulness of this story.

Now with that said, lets get into the subject of Congressional approval. At this point, with all of these executive orders from presidents (including Trump), what purpose is there for Congress if they can by side stepped with EOs?

Most Russians are very internet savy, more so than we, but they are being watched.

Internet backbone provider Lumen quits Russia

and how Russia is getting around it. Moscow to issue TLS certificates to Russian websites

The internet was built from the beginning to have work arounds for this scenario. It's what it was built FOR actually. If one channel is cut off there are multiple other channels.

So just to be clear, are we agreeing that internet censorship is a bad thing? No matter who does it?

No kidding, why do we need a congress or supreme court if everything can be done by executive fiat?

White House insiders say Trump would have pulled U.S. out of NATO in second term.

If we do anything it should be pulling out from and expel the UN from US soil first. I think NATO is worth salvaging, but everyone has to pull their weight.

This is one of the best and clearest writeups of what is going on with the war I have seen recently.

Has Russia’s invasion stalled? Meduza tackles one of the biggest questions in Ukraine as the war enters its third week — Meduza

The whole site is a great resource I encourage everyone to check it out. It is an independent Russian news publisher located in Latvia in ENG/RUS that gives both sides of what is going on. They have been banned from Russian internet but I like that they are giving the propaganda from both sides and then digging into the claims of each.

From what I can tell, its fairly even-handed. They are against the war but are actually doing the job of journalists and not simply regurgitating crap from someone's state department like our media is now doing.

Ukraine is going to have to find a way to take advantage of the thawing season and inflict serious damage. Otherwise, this sounds like its just a slow grind and a matter of time till the sheer numbers overwhelm them. Russians have always had the mindset that quantity has it's own quality. Putin will just send as many as he has to, casualties be damned.

Good read.

Gonna be a meat grinder.

I tend to get a lot of unwanted attention when I post, so I tend to use guerrilla tactics when it comes to the internet. It's for privacy, and sometimes I'm faster than my own thoughts. again, sorry for any misunderstanding.

No reason to be sorry it’s all good

It is some indication…
I agree. I didn't say it was not a component or not a necessity. But an economy is graded on far more than just it equities markets.

but even if that’s true then apply what you think IS an indication of economic health to Russia right now and give me your diagnosis.
Well first off, lets state the obvious, these sanctions are going to be a set back and something to over come.

Now with that said, Russia has been dealing with sanctions since 2014. Putin has done something for Russia that US presidents should have been doing here in America, and that is moving to make Russia more economically independent. They can supply a lot of their own energy needs and a good deal of their own food. Obviously, I'm not saying that Russia is totally independent of imports, but they have greatly reduced their need for them. Also, the areas where Russia will feel the hit with regards to price increases or difficulties will be in a lot of these foreign luxury items or non-essential goods. So the BMWs and high end items fro the EU will be tough to come by and probably anything else imported from there will either be impossible to get or come with an extreme price tag.

Russia does have 2 things in their favor; They are resource rich and their people are a bit more accustomed to pain much more than Western Europe and certainly much more than us here in America. So time is on their side in a certain sense. How long can The West tolerate high energy prices and galloping inflation at the grocery store?
