War in Ukraine

Wow. I was being sarcastic about the Ghost of Kiev killing 50 Russian fighters...but that is more ridiculous.
How can some of you a) believe some of this stuff and b) not have the self awareness to post such idiocy in public?

Denied easy victory, Russia presses reduced goals in Ukraine

"When it comes to the grinding job of capturing and holding cities, conventional military metrics suggest Russia needs a 5-to-1 advantage in urban fighting, analysts say. Meanwhile, the formula for ruling a restive territory in the face of armed opposition is 20 fighters for every 1,000 people — or 800,000 Russian troops for Ukraine’s more than 40 million people, Clarke notes. That’s almost as many as Russia’s entire active-duty military of 900,000."

Okay, to put it a different way, an invading army normally needs a larger numerical advantage than Russia currently has.

I'm probably wrong but if Russia is deploying their flagship hypersonics, that smacks of desperation.

Russia follows a Clausewitz type approach. You fight for a bit and negotiate for a bit. They see war as a continuation of political discourse, with other means.

As I have said, Russia is in total control (doesnt mean they arent making stupid mistakes on the battlefied as they are prone to do, they arent nearly as skilled or disciplined in tactics as the US). Russia will continue to ratchet up the pressure and use more force to achieve their diplomatic goals. The are slowly squeezing Ukraine.

Could it be the author is wrong in their assumptions and Russia's goal isnt to capture and hold cities?

I think the US and EU will cost them a whole ****load of money. You can kick Xi in the balls and he won't flinch. Hitting him in the wallet is a different story.

Coming up on the midterms with already massive supply chain issues we ain’t hitting China in the wallet.

I guess we'll see but I would be surprised if China gets two wrapped up in this thing. Maybe some medical supplies and a best wishes card to Vlad.

Sure, the author might be wrong. I think it's reasonable to assume that goals change as facts on the ground change.
Early reports said that Russian negotiators were demanding that Ukraine surrender.
Later reports said that Russian negotiators were asking for a smaller amount of territory and other concessions.
I agree that Russia is slowly squeezing Ukraine, but they also seem to be losing some momentum.
I don't know how this will end, but Putin clearly has a fight on his hands, as an invading army should expect.
There is speculation that Putin wants some kind of gains and concessions that he can call a win at this point.

I don't understand anyone thinking Putin is justified in this. Ukraine has a right to defend its sovereignty.

If it can't hold the cities, it can't maintain a Pootin friendly leadership. If it can't hold the leadership, it can't impose its will to keep NATO, the EU or the west from influencing its decisions or to keep the Ukranian wishes to align with those ideals at bay.

If the idea now is just to scorched earth and level cities and kill civilians, then the war is lost and Putin will forever be cast as war criminal like Hitler et al. Hell, that's probably the case now no matter what.

You're fos.

You're a Russian sympathizer, just like Ras. You support Putin's thuggery and want Ukraine to be conquered under any circumstance - stop fronting.

Despite saying the opposite many times. Here it is again, I couldnt care less if Putin retreats with his tail between his legs.

Total control? Are you nuts? They have no control and they are being forced to acknowledge this reality.
Can they bomb Ukraine into oblivion? Sure.
Is that total control? Hell no.
What have they really accomplished?
The list of what they have lost is long and growing.

Considering what we've been told for years about Russia's formidable military resources, it sure seems that they're not putting much into this invasion, yet.

And what were the people of Crimea saying and tried to vote on? Who was listening to them? What are the people of eastern Ukraine saying? Who is listening to them?
What about the guy in 2B, what was he saying? Who is listening to him?

Not to mention China is on the brink of a real-estate bubble bursting. Their economy could be about to go in the crapper worse than ours did in 2007.
