Omg I went to the wiki for Landen Carter Haynes:

Haynes spent the remainder of his life in Memphis, practicing law. In 1872, he attended a banquet in Jackson, Tennessee, where he was introduced by Nathan B. Forrest, who pointed out that Haynes was from the "godforsaken" pro-Union region of East Tennessee.

Anything Nathan Bedford Forrest calls "godforsaken" is 100 percent God's own country. I want a version of what Forrest said on my tombstone.

Two neighbors from Cali, one closer with the wife would NOT be what is as described above. I hear this whining from the right a lot. People seek out this region because of its low costs, and traditionally perceived conservative ideologies.

In my experience, its a destination for them. While I wish we would see an influx of new ideas, I welcome any and all. Doesnt impact me at all. Just saying that my experience has not been as described.

Where at? I'm honestly surprised that would be up anywhere given his main claim to fame. That said, Post-war the myth of a unified South and unified North developed. It was convenient for both regions to pretend they were universally one way or the other. But East, TN was universally considered the most Pro-Union spot in the entire country (even in the North) and it wasn't close. Even prior, to the Civil War, East, TN was reviled by the rest of the South for being "too lax" in its race relations (we had the first pro-abolition paper in the country).

^^This you will hear some awful things from newcomers who perceive this region through the lens of a stereotype. They will say things, natives would not say and believe things more at home in the pit of Mississippi than in the Upper South.

I joined a Sr golf league this year and was amazed at how many folks have moved here from NY, CT, OH in retirement. First couple of times I played, I was the only native in the foursome. All moved here because of taxes, able to move from a 1100 Sq ft house to a "mansion", grandkids live here, etc. All good guys, for yankees. One was a prison guard at Attica!

Oh lord, Ive got stories. Was at an event for our kid's school. One of the new neighbors opined as to why he chose this area. And of course, with two black people sitting behind him - proceeded to say he thought this area was going to be a certain way (very uncomfortable). Said he chose it because people are 'more normal' here.

Truth is, we may be normal. We may be abnormal. But, I dont care where anyone is from. I dont like that mentality. Good people are good people no matter what.

May not like Trump, may not like Biden.

At end of the day we can respect the office of President of USA, and one another. Period. Green, purple, martian, non-martian, horse or cow.

Most of East Tennessee was pro union. The county I live in is in S.E Tennessee, shares borders with Georgia and Alabama, which is a different world from N.E.. Tennessee. It was pro Confederacy, Chattanooga was a major Southern stronghold and shipping hub. People think the war was lost at Gettysburg but it was not. It was lost at Chattanooga.
BTW we are the front line protecting y'all from the bammers and those barking fools.

True Chattanooga was def. different. They had commercial interests that were different from the rest of the East. And, fwiw, thank you for your service! 🤣

I absolutely adore New Yorkers. They share a quality with Southerners that really isn't found elsewhere - they're outgoing, talkative and want to know all about you. The Mid-West is much more guarded as is the West Coast but New Yorkers wear their hearts on their sleeve just like us. I haven't known many from CT but those I have known have been agreeable.
