Was Riley ferguson a myth?

Happens quite a bit it sports.

"Hey, Riley. We are gonna put you in this boot for a few months." -Butch

"Why, coach, doc says I'm fine." -Riley

"Well, the thing is you're not as good as you think you are and we are going to hide it by saying you're injured. You know, to keep you from being upset that you suck. We have your feelings to worry about here." -Butch

"Wtf????" -Riley

I believe the part that Ainge said about Ferg thinking the job should be handed to him off pure skill. Thing is the school he's from in NC is not some small school, they are rivals with Independence in Charlotte, NC. Football is a big thing at that school and it probably got to his head at an early age, and no one was there to bring him back down to earth.

Yeah Independence hasn't been good in a very long time. Butler is a medium size school.

With the exception of maybe 1-2 guys on here, nobody ordained him shiite. Most everybody who has commented on Riley has either "reported on him" via sources like VQ or simply said, "hey, the reports on this kid's talent is good, he's the only one we didn't see play last year and he couldn't be worse than the other 3". That pretty much sums up 90% of the "pro- Riley" posts on here since Spring started.

On the other hand, the irrational dislike for this kid and anyone who dared to cut and paste quotes on his performance/status/playing time has been unreal prior to this week's revelations about him leaving.

There's been no mythology about this kid IMO. Just a question as to whether or not he's better than the other 3 and if he would play QB at UT. We now have an answer to the second question and it's no .... we never will have one for the first.

Well, I was wrong on two different fronts.

(1) I thought that Riley was going to be the next big time q.b. at U.T.

(2) I thought that Peterman would be the odd man out and would transfer before August. Never expected it to be Riley.

I guess that shows what I think I know!!!!

Lets just hope Dobbs is not a myth because he will likely be the starter in 2015 unless we sign an absolute stud this class that can't step in right away.

After what I saw of Dobbs in the MIssouri & Vandy games, I am not too optimistic about him...

Vandy. No North and a limited gameplan to not throw it. Mizzou? 26/42 62% 240 yds, 7 rush att 45 yds as a true freshman vs a top 10 team in his 1st full game. That is not impressive?

How is the smallest qb large framed like Rivers? I guess Dobbs and Worley are big Ben sized. Good arm supposedly. He played against good competition at a good sized school. He was a 3 star for a reason. Some just chose to overhype him due to a lot of factors.

Remember when you're losing that the back up QB is always better.

what a reach. made up an injury? then Riley continued to wear a sleeve on his shin even in Spring ball? cmon man. some of the people on VN lol

You read my mind and the mind of every other person with common sense. Let me make Blantantly LIE and make up an injury because a QB can't read protections and try to keep that a secret.

Ok while it wasn't 90% of the 'Pro-Riley' group saying was a Heisman winner, the vast majority 67%, or maybe 66.9% or 67.1% I will let LV argue the numbers, was saying he was going to come in and save TN football. If have read plenty of crazyness about him, again not Rod-Wilkesesque but crazy for someone who literately never made it on the field. Who knows (maybe Freak) how many times people said, Well I watched his video and he should have started. Or quoted all the reporters who saw 5 mins of live practice and said he was the best, those same reporters now saying he was a head case. I know throwing the ball a mile is different than the problems he is supposedly having but.... Too many people bought in, even many of the reporters, I am looking at you Ainge, to the fact that he was the greatest UT QB to never see the field, and now they have had their dreams crushed. Get over it, VN loved Riley crowned him the King, now he gone, wish him the best.

As far as being better this pretty well sums it up, he was the worst of the 4 overall. You can't say his potential makes him better. You have to look at the whole thing, he MIGHT have been a better passer, but at everything else, or at least something else, he was no-where near as good as the others---unless someone else drops out. He was lacking somewhere bad enough where he 'had to/did' leave.OP had part of it right the MYTH of what might have/could have/ been according to a majority of VN. Let the debate!

Eric Ainge stating recently that Riley struggled with learning the protections got me to thinking. How on earth was he ever going to play last season if he is currently struggling with protections?
Prior to last season, at the open scrimmage which I attended, I thought it was strange that Riley participated in the qb drills, but his scrimmage time was limited. The other qbs including Dobbs played way more. Then he suffered the mysterious leg injury before Dobbs was inserted at qb. I don't believe there was ever an injury. I think it was made up to protect him. This stuff happens all the time in sports.
I am thankful that coach jones had the good sense to recruit Josh a Dobbs because there were probably some red flags about Riley from the beginning. Perhaps it was because he played at a very small school in nc. I don't know....
But I never understood the hype as he was a 3 star prospect. It's not like he was considered a top guy coming out of high school. Good luck to Riley and I hope he finds happiness and whatever he is looking for.

Come on man. A fake injury. Smdh.

You sure about 67.1%. Could've sworn it was 68.43%. No, no, wait.... 72.486%.....yeah that's it.... 72.486%. Damn math.

To look at him, you see a large framed kid with a good arm, sorta like Philip Rivers. So, that is why there was hype about him. His potential!!

The reason he was only a 3* is probably because he played in a smaller school conference and supposedly not at the highest high school competition.

He had 4 star talent coming out of HS.

Weren't both Dobbs and Fergy standouts at the Elite 11?

yes and I believe Fergy won it. I think it's a matter of wrong place wrong time. He will be really good for another school and we will all be wondering why this didn't happen at UT. I have a hard time believing that Bama, LSU, Florida, UNC etc...all missed that he would be a failure!

:good!:
