There is no doubt he was successful in recruiting, but many of those guys were risks that other schools were not willing to take.
I don't know about this part. We had some risks (Nu'Keese, for instance), but I don't remember any risks that other schools weren't willing to take. It sometimes seemed that FLK wanted the risky guys only if other big schools wanted them too.

Are you serious? Markeith Ambles ring a bell? How about Daniel Hood? There were concerns about Matt Simms too -- we were the only school to offer him. There are a more that I cannot remember right now.
Another guy that got a UT offer from FLK and O: Jamar Hornsby.
Markeith Ambles had scholarship offers revoked by USC, Florida, UGA and numerous others. The US Army AA game UNINVITED him.
I had forgotten about Hood. Didn't know Simms was a character risk, just that he was an ability risk.
Brown, Ambles, Richardson, etc. I knew were character risks but I thought they were still being pretty heavily recruited. Am I misremembering here?

Never heard of Hornsby. Didn't realize that Ambles has so many offers pulled. I didn't follow that recruitment until the end when UNC and USC (post Lane) were after him.
Didn't know Simms was a character risk? Seriously? The dude is notorious for having a picture of him with weed on the internet and some of his antics in High School were well-reported.
And I said other schools were not willing to take. Not that no one else was willing to take although there were a few of those as well.
We were John Brown's only offer.
I do not think there is any question FLK set the program back. His staff helped him win some games the talent maybe should not have and we were in games we had no business being in, but a lot of that is due to Monte's defense.
Coaching is more than just the product you put on the field. Sure, you are measured ultimately by wins and losses, but you cannot judge results in the short term. A sustainable success is what is required and often so difficult to achieve in a conference such as ours. I do not think what success FLK and co had was sustainable. Yeah we slipped from 3rd nationally in 2008 to 22nd in 2009 in total defense with 2 first round draft picks. Not sure if CMK was having his best year...VT-Aub-OHIO etc...Just sayin...GBO
