We basically play pick-up basketball

A few years ago UT BB was on the rise. It was exciting to see over 20K screaming in TBA as over achieving players beat the likes of Kansas, KY, FL and Memphis. We would go to the dance and win. Now.......we lose to the likes of UTEP, Mercer, Bama amd GA. Now, we are at best.....mediocre. We have some good players, but they can't seem to get it together enough to win. Frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a lot like the slide of the football program of the 2000's . Greatness to mediocrity due to coaching.

Yes, physical defense was his hallmark and now it has been negated by new rules. A good coach adapts to changes and thrives. Tim Floyd didn't seem to have problems coaching his team either on offense or defense and they actually ran offensive plays.

You mean there are offensive plays in basketball?

Jerry Green was like Martin--decent recruiter (not great but decent), half-assed coach. It's not just the bad offense, did you miss it: The Vols missed 16 rpt. 16 free throws. That is JUNK, stupid basketball. Good basketball teams make free throws. Players that can't make free throws is another example of street basketball.

Defense isn't the problem. Did you happen to see the mess on the other end of the court?
Have to agree here. UT has more FTA in every game except the first one. The physical front line has not been a problem in that area as of yet. I won't touch the offensive problems.

...and its UGLY. We have no direction. No offensive set. Maymon just throws up blind shots and can't even see the rim. We will live and die by the 3 that's for sure. Our bigs don't know how to contest shots. They just stand flat footed and the D shoots over them over and over and over. Just awful ugly basketball.
Martin's answer to the zone defense has always been the 3 pt shot.
Still is, even after the rule changes.
The reason for the changes was to make zone defense less effective.
The rules favor penetrating guards.
Hey Cuonzo.
When the 3 isn't falling, attack with penetration. You've got at least 3 guys now that would excel at it.
They changed the rules to help you.
Answer: Mumble , mumble. got to make shots. mumble, mumble, good, good

Do you realize attendance is about the same now as when Pearl was here? And that Pearl lost to Oakland and some trash teams? Also hasn't Cuonzo beat pretty much every team you are bragging about Pearl beating?

He has beat Florida and Kentucky, but not when they were rated #1. No comparison.

What dies it really matter? As long as they win. Actually I think they play better this way.

Pound the ball inside to Stokes and Maymon while challenging and altering shots on defense and playing the passing lanes.

Pearl also lost to unranked Kentucky teams on multiple occasions.

Bruce pearl was 46-19 in his first two years with two NCAA tournament appearences. Martin finished 39-31 after his first two with well you know how many NCAA births. There is no comparison.
