We Need New Plays/Schemes

This year, no OL. Next year, no QB. The year after that the offense may be clicking but it'll be a rebuilding year for the DL. We've been in this rut for 10 seasons. What we need is to hit the jackpot in recruiting at all positions of need for 2-3 classes in a row.

Good post ..agree 100%. This 'scheme' would be great , if it could be blocked well, and I think it will be later in the season after this rookie offensive line gets its legs under it . I have news for the scheme changers ...all schemes require blocking . If they can't block a spread ...well they cant block an I form . The more blockers you put in the box ...the more defenders you get in the box.

The good thing ...is that Butch and crew appear to be pulling the recruiting thing off nicely

Not to nitpick, but he said "I fear not the man who has practice 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." Sorry I had to in honor of Bruce Lee. :) I do, however, see your point and agree somewhat.

Thus the(paraphrase) in my post...nitpicker.:p

Then have our players execute plays that our coaches know they can succeed at 90 percent or more. Not that hard. If you run the sweep 3 times and it never works regardless of why, don't call it.

Ever heard of setting up a play? You give them the same look but it ends up being a reverse,a throw back pass, etc. instead? Guess not or I wouldn't be reading this thread

I have a theory... and it goes like this.

When you succeed you don't want to change things you are doing. CBJ and Bajakian have had success where they have been. But when you do the same thing over and over, defensive minds will adapt to it eventually.

I'm not saying the system is flawed, I'm saying the system has run it's course and we need to try something new.

The first season at Central Michigan, they were rocking. New system, new everything. Defenses didn't really know what was up.

They get to Cincy and do the same thing and probably tweak some things in the playbook. They got better talent so things are running smooth.

Come to TN and the talent is off the charts but you have better opponents who will scheme better against you.

I don't know of any coach who has stuck with the same OC for more years than Butch has. I'm sure there are some, but I don't know of any personally.

Tons of tapes of games to look at. We can watch every game from Central Michigan, Cincy, to now and get a feel of what plays there are and the tendencies.

I hope I'm wrong and our OC has tweaked or changed plays every season but if not, I fear we have already become predictable.

You might not have to change staff, but changing philosophies might be needed in THE FUTURE.

Lets learn the plays in the play book first. I believe the coaches, guys who make living for a number of years drawing up plays will do just fine when we don't have to start three freshmen on the right side of the ball. New plays will not help if you can not excite them. Neyland used to say he would not call a play during a game that his team had not pracitced at least a thousand times.

He was a pretty good coach.
