We Now Have A Divided Fan Base...Thanks UT.

The fan base will only be divided until everyone adjusts to whatever the new reality will be and gets their adrenaline levels back into halfway normal range. It's like Christmas morning when you're a kid and get a dud present or two (day-of-the-week underwear at age 8 was mine*), and you sulk and mope for a while, and then you get over it and go play with your new stuff.

There'll still be the usual can't-be-happy-with-anyone people though, who will post and post and post in order to get arguments going (aka trolls.)

*Note: I don't think that guys ever had to experience day-of-the-week underwear. Not sure what your equivalent would be. :hi:

all we got was a lump of coal and they were gone before News Year day:eek:hmy:

My thing is....

We pursued Fisher, Gundy, Fedora, Mora, and Strong.

Interesting....

Fisher had just gotten a contract extention, and we "pursued" him, and Oh look!

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher reportedly close to contract extension - OrlandoSentinel.com - This was 3 hours ago.

Mora and Fedora have only been with their programs one year. Very small chance either of them would Kiffin their program.

Gundy, just received a contract extension this year.

Strong, just received a contract extension last year.

My question is....why in the world did we go after seemingly only candidates who had JUST had their contract issued or renewed, and who had just come out and stated how happy they were?

Doesn't that seem strange? It's almost like we went after candidates that were the least likely to come, given their situations.

Nah more like an educated guess, unlike so many fans here who see a 10-2 record and a BCS bowl as instant success for UT are fooling themselves.

I wouldnt call it educated. An informed opinion would be one formed after doing a little research and if someone did a little research they would see comments like this from a 5* recruit.

Coach graham just left #vols.. change is good haha in their case

No hire was going to unite the fan base?

Really?

Let me assure you, anybody who could walk into the University of Tennessee in December or January and still get us a top 5 recruiting class would have united the fan base.

Saban, Stoops, Gruden, Meyer, Kelly all five could have. They, by name and reputation alone would have given every person confident that they would at least bring talent back to Knoxville, and have a bazillion times better shot at winning a championship than Dooley did.

However, it seems that we attempted to reach out to none of them, at least that's what the majority of the board believes. We didn't swing for the fences. We didn't try for the home run. We didn't believe in our university to think we could get who we want, or at least offer the moon and make someone say no to us.

Charlie Strong is not going to unite the fan base at this point unless Charlie Strong signs a contract, and picks up a top recruiting class, proving that high level recruits want to play for him. Because they sure aren't lining up to play for him at Louisville. I know he has recruited better than anyone else has at Louisville. But, this is Tennessee. He will have to step it up. There's reports that some recruits would be willing to sign with us if he comes, and I hope so. But I guarantee you those and more would come for those other coaches.

Any hire that said we will not settle for mediocrity would have united the fan base. A proven winner and recruiter on a consistent basis. Not someone who is coming off a good year, but has not recruited on an elite level, or has produced consistent results.

Really with this fan base??? We are tearing down a coach before we hire him??? Saban coached at one of our most hated rival. You don't think some would hate him for that and say he's not a TN man. Stoops hasn't won big enough at OK, always loses one he shouldn't, never uses all his talent and so on. Gurden will leave at 1st chance he gets, he's a NFL guy and so on. Mayer see Saben. Kelly well you see the point. This fan base is divide cause cause we have sucked for 2 long and now we are scared. Scared to believe, scared to be let down again, and scared our beloved Vols will fall farther down the ladder from our once proud place. What's funny is when your scared you sometimes forget to look clearly at what's ahead. We are like the squirrel that starts to cross the road, and almost to the other side but panics and run back only to get run over. How about we at least go ahead and run to the other side safely and let it play out. Lets see if the man can bring some players in, and let's let him play a couple games on the hill, before we let our fear take over and destroy something that may be great!!! Point is we don't know yet, but let's at least give him a chance!!!! VFL :peace2:

The fanbase doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is winning, as it should be.

It's not like we ever had a chance at 4/5 of the names you listed and depending on what/who you believe the same can be said for Gruden. Apples to oranges. I don't support randomly throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks when it comes to randomly offering big name coaches to keep up appearances. Not an efficient use of time.

For some twisted reason, I wish we had to use our real names, occupations, age, and amount of teeth we have before we could post

Would give more insight into some of the posters

Agreed. I love UT, and our fans for the most part. But some are just out there.

Don't see 8-4 ever.

I think Strong is fundamentally better than Dooley...then again, hiring a peeled banana would be too.

What people don't realize is that we're at a huge disadvantage to Alabama and Florida, both in coaches and location to recruits. Hiring a mediocre Big East coach won't do it. You have to spend more money to get the absolute best to negate the disadvantage(s).

I have nothing against Charlie Strong, but this hire isn't it, just a long 4 years of mediocrity and Music City Bowls. Better than what we had, but nothing more than that.

Agreed. Everyone will ***** and moan about this, but guarantee there will be full stadiums in Neyland next year. He will provide a spark that was much needed. I was there when Dooley coached his first game. They chanted Dooley, Dooley as he walked by for his first Volwalk. This guy has done ten times as much as Dools. If they can get behind a guy most here had to Google when the hire was announced, I imagine Strong will be ok.

truth hurts, and the Gruden bs in the threads has a lot to do with the fanbase that views this site being divided. Posters set people up for a huge letdown, and people have put themselves in positions to be let down and react by putting so much stock into so much misinformation.

Outside of internet sites like this, the fanbase will be united by a new hire and staff.
