Wealth Tax

.

But it seems by proclaiming to rise out of poverty you have to leave behind the impoverished, that you’re stating poverty is not the result of poor luck. But rather poverty is a result of poor actions.

And poverty can be the result of poor luck. Medical bankruptcies used to be a real killer for some people

Let me clarify: you have to leave behind the people who steal cash out of your pocketbook or wallet while you sleep. You have to leave behind the people who try and guilt trip you into just another loan or just another tank of gas for the fifth time that month, then go out and buy alcohol or drugs. Then, when you're on solid footing, you point them in the direction of the appropriate assistance to help them get beyond their issues to a place where they can put the pieces together to get up to a better condition.

Come on now. People are accountable for their own choices just as humans are accountable to the Savior.

Stealing even more from the wealthy should resolve everything. If only they would create foundations and give to charities then the government wouldn’t be needed as a middleman. Wait…

I mean, the government can pass it along to Planned Parenthood or spend it on other things that the wealthy aren’t capable of deciding on their own how to do their good deeds. Plus the government can use a lot of it create jobs for a bunch more bureaucrats.

Work 40 hours plus 5 OT at McDonald’s and you’ll be grossing close to $40k. Plus be eligible for government subsidies and assistance from a litany of charities. But wealth needs to be redistributed even more because flipping those burgers shouldn't be so repressive.
so you agree $15 an hour is a reasonable wage then?

Actually it is unreasonably high, but there is demand for cashiers and fry cooks while the supply of willing labor isn’t there. No need for government intervention and even more taxation when that is the reality of the economics. Rent too high? Get a roommate or two. Can’t afford kids without the government’s financial assistance? Don’t have them. Can’t pay back the student loan? Learn a trade instead of being an Art History major (some blue collar jobs pay 6 figures). Healthy and strong? Join a branch of the military.

I completely agree here. I was just figuring out the math. $15 as an entry level position is asinine. But its what the local place offers now.

I saw up to $16 hour at Wendy's a few weeks ago. What gets me is the cats that hired on 2 years ago and only making $10, so they gotta be bumped to $18 and the cats hired 3 years ago get $20.

Artificially driving up wages is certainly not the answer to a HSoL

It’s not necessarily “driving up wages”. It’s an equilibrium of basic economic conditions within capitalism. But in the context of my example it was relating to a slam dunk opportunity for the current poor fellers to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps”.

Not so sure I find the last few years of demand to raising minimum wages to what we see today as "coincidence"

Yes. $15 x 2,000 hours plus $22.50 x 250 equals over $35k. If the cashier and fry cook shack up, $70k with near zero income taxes should be a good life for most. A bigger government isn’t the solution for everybody’s poor choices and bad habits.

The minimum wage is fine at $7-$8/hour. Prevents the exploitation of the 15 year olds and migrant workers. The non-government mandated, actual minimum wage based on economics is easily $10-$11/hour and apparently closer to $15/hour based on help wanted signage. But the effects of the $30k unemployment entitlements haven’t worn off yet.

The market price is set already. You think it probable that someone who signs on for $16 today that a co-worker will sign on for $9 tomorrow? This will take a long time to sort out, which may be a good thing. Can u imagine a coworker getting $7 more for just hiring on a year earlier and performing the same job? It would be like micro income inequality and resentment much like we experience in the macro environment today.

If it’s that extreme there will be ways and means of equalizing the wages. The $16/hour employee will get the less desirable shifts. The toilet cleaning duty. Be given limited hours and no overtime. Maybe even be forced to take a pay cut if they aren’t card carrying members of the International Brotherhood of Burger Flippers.

In reality the $9/hour versus $16/hour for the same job won’t be happening. Capitalism tends to work these issues out. Labor unions and the federal government interfere with the natural balance. Also the Zoomers aren’t as many as the Millennials. If $15 is the norm, it’s not heading back to $9 in viable industries.

Not once in the poor / indigent / homeless ministry did anyone I was serving ever say "At least I don't live in North Sudan."

The "better off here than elsewhere" is a mental game we choose to use as an numbing agent to the very real plights of those around us.
Isnt that the exact argument the wealth tax uses?

"I am worse off than others" is a mental game they use to justify that they are wronged by the rich since they are poor. They play off their plights as solely the fault of others and thus deserving of unearned compensation from not invested third parties.

What's worse is they can use the mob to take what they want from those with differing opinions.
