Week 1 observations/overreactions

I think Merk is about the same place at this time of the year as Nico was last year. I keep seeing people point out this game and the Bowl game as reasons Nico should have been the starter last year. Those people are on crack. Who he was by the bowl game was light years ahead of him early season. Last year was last year this is this year and so far Nico is surpassing any realistic expectations. Lets be happy with what we have instead of turning it into hate.
Definitely no hate here for Merk or Moore.

Nico is good, really good. He has a bunch of good receivers and backs and a pretty good OLine.

I don't think we saw Merk or Moore with all the starters AND we saw Heupel using less of the playbook with them.

I'm not ready to judge the guys based on today. It just wasn't a "critical game situation" where we NEEDED them to perform like we will if Nico goes down. I hope we don't find out what they can do this year.

Look, our backups are our backups. If Nico goes down with concussion or a minor 1-2 week injury; I think we’re OK. Otherwise, they’ll be great in trash time

-Nico played a hell of game. Seems like he got in his own head a little at the end of the half. He'll be fine.

-Backup QB is concerning

-Bru seems way more explosive than the last 2 years

-RB Depth seems very good

-Thornton may have a big year. Looks very comfortable.

-DL is Nasty

-Defense was flying around for the most part. Hoping we don't give up the easy stuff vs better teams.

Overall, hard to pull much from a game like this but we did what we were supposed to and a good springboard into a big game next week

GBO

I thought all the QB's played great with the exception of one turnover.

Team depth is as good as it has been in decades.

That's your opinion and that's perfectly fine. There was also an overthrown TD to Brazzell, a Hitch route that flew into the stands, another throw to Brazzell that was a bad read. Week 1. Maybe he cleans it up
Damn Debbie downer. We nearly hung 50 in our first half of the year while allowing zero. Nico completed nearly 80% of his passes with three TDs and his day was over at halftime. Then we continue to pile it on with back ups. Had over 700 yards of offense for the first time in the AP era.

Yall are funny as hell. You will comb through something positive and find the one thing that isn't 100% blind ignorance and nitpick it. I'm not talking about Nico in that post. I've already reiterated several times. If you could read past the first sentence I posted, it's pretty self-explanatory.

Those saying the secondary is concerning or needs to step up…why are you saying this?

Chattanooga was 13/24…barely over 50%…for 153 yards passing.

I’m not saying they’re “healed,” given that it’s Chattanooga, but I also don’t see any reason to criticize that performance either. Especially with Rickey Gibson out.

On that topic, I liked what I saw of Jakobe Thomas, coming up and making tackles in space.

Strangest "no shows" for me today we're Squirrel White on offense and James Pierce Jr on defense. I kinda get what the deal was with Pierce, as it looked like UTC schemed around him with quick passes and heavy on the run. But I'm surprised at how few targets Squirrel had.

Vanilla Defense today. No need to dial up the heat just yet.

Squirrel will get his share but now we have many, many more targets to spread the ball around to, especially if consider TEs.

We also played base vanilla defense today.

Watching Notre Dame getting flagged for PI, just because the defender didn't turn his head around. From my experience of watching College FB, it seems that the refs love to throw flags at db's who can't crank their neck.

Backups look fine that int was walk on Sneed’s bad route
Heup wasn’t too happy with Gaston’s play. He said today wasn’t one of Moore’s best games. He was late on a couple of throws and threw one horrible ball behind receiver. The int was on both the WR and Gaston though.

With that said, I was still please overall w his play. It was nasty hot that I don’t know how the players kept focus. It was brutal and I had to leave @ half as I felt sick and dizzy though I had drank water and Powerade.

I agree on the backup QB situation, and that probably doesn't get resolved for 2 years (McIntyre didn't look great in his last game). We go the way of Nico. Without him, we probably lose 4 or 5. With him, the sky is the limit.

We must protect this Nico!!!!

Uhh they we playing Miami.....I dont know how it goes down there but up here instate or rivalry games there are no excuses and no quarter given. Miami just curbstomped Florida which just put Napier on the hottest of hot seats. They still have A&M, Miss State and UCF to play with only Samford as a cupcake to munch on... Florida has normally eaten 2-3 cupcakes before playing us each year. Napier might not make it til the UT game at this rate.

I don't love or hate either of those QB's but 2 picks and 122 yards combined and barely 50% completion rate? There was one singular good play that whole game by Florida a 71 yard run which is the only reason you went over 200 yards of TOTAL offense..

Maybe you're right maybe Napier is playing 7d chess and sat all his other starters against MIAMI to fool the world?

One concern is the OL pass protection. The left side was getting beat today. DS is a good RB, but horrible in pass protection.
