Well Boys, I Think We Have Found A Great Coach

He hasn't proven anything yet in recruiting. That will be the real test of whether or not he is even a good coach, much less great.

So far, I'm extremely underwhelmed with his recruiting.

All 4 of his recruits (minus Chievous, who is redshirting) have contributed and played well. It would help your cause in the basketball forum to watch more than one game.

Time will tell. Way to early to know at this point. I hope they turn out much better than they were rated coming out of high school. I was getting quite used to the talent that Pearl was able to bring in.

Oh, so you are looking at "ratings." Bet you weren't a fan of Chris Lofton, JaJuan Smith, etc... Duke Crews, Ramar Smith, etc... all lived up to their billing. Glad we went by recruiting rankings.

Maybe we should get Cuonzo to come talk to the football team at halftimes. Great adjustments.

Is everyone forgetting, with that lazy ass last year we were a top 5 team at this time (and many sportswriters were arguing us to be #1 after the pitt win)

I'm gonna wait and see if we keep this level of play up. I've been given the Philly Fake out one to many times by TN over the passed few years. We start off good, great even, and then peel off. (not counting Bruce's elite 8 run, that was good all year really)

Pearl did get several good players to UT but he also had a large number of busts. So far, every recruit signed by Martin has looked like a contributor except Chievous who is redshirting.

No, their play tells. They look like they belong out there, and they're contributing. That's all you can ask out of true freshmen.

Please. 4 of his 5 recruits are contributing. The other is extremely raw.

Perhaps you'd prefer if we had signed two non-qualifiers and a big man who ended up at Wyoming.

Didn't you know, a coach is supposed to come in from a mid-major and automatically land top 10 players.

Pearl didn't seem to have a problem landing 4 and 5 star Top 50- Top 100 type players.

You can't get to the upper echelon, compete with the Kentucky's, Kansas's, North Carolina's, Duke's, etc. and go to the Final 4 with just hopeful "diamond in the rough" types. You gotta get some big time players to mix in as well. We'll see if Cuonzo can get that done over the next several years. I'm really hoping he can.

Yes I love the fact after halftime adjustments Memphis scored 55 in first half and 28 in second half. Huge difference in defense and we can actually shoot free throws this year which is refreshing to see. GBO! I think we have a really good coach. Hopefully he can recruit!

So he landed one legitimate 5 star. All the other ones underachieved extremely. I liked Bruce as the coach and defended the guy, but he was best playing with players that fit his system and had a chip on their shoulder.

Hilarious considering two of last year's F4 teams were mid majors.

But he didn't start doing it the day he stepped on campus. In fact, recruiting looked disastrous for him early on. He lost Tyler Smith, couldn't get Jamont Gordon, and only added Ryan Childress who had signed with Pearl at Milwaukee.

Facts, they are useless :)

Well, he would've bought in and improved, or he would've had splinters in his rear.

This

I am starting to think that Richardson should be considered for a starting job. Seems to provide more support than McRae or Tatum (even if he doesn't touch the ball as much as those two).

Richardson was playing over McRae in overtime. Says something, imo.

And, to the point of the thread, I am 100% in the tank for Cuonzo Martin. The recruiting worried me a bit, but he's got his guys contributing as freshman and going toe to toe with top ten teams.

Right, I noticed that. Does't necessarily mean he's better, but am I the only one that thinks the team would benefit more if Richardson started? It's still a little early - it wouldn't be surprising to see him look more like a true freshman with substantial PT.

Those teams won't consistently compete with the elite programs because they won't get elite talent.

I want UT to become a big time program, not just a 1 shot, 1 year Cinderella deal.

Richardson should not be starting. Like 87 said, McRae and Tatum were more highly rated coming out of HS. :)

maybe you should watch the play and not the rating. Hall and mcrae were 4 stars, but not basketball players. Richardson was the choice today and its obvious why. Yemi is on his way and has already surpassed hall imo, as far as the plus/minus ratio of positive to negative plays.

Butler doesn't seem to have a problem competing with these schools. How many 4 or 5 star recruits do they have playing?
