Well we would have been a lock for playoffs

We are going to end up watching Bama in the playoffs aren't we. A team that lost to Texas Am

Tuscaloosa probably already calling the committee

On every available metric we are ahead of Alabama. So once again, it’s not a lock that we would have been in. It’s possible, but not certain

The committee said they placed weight on the bad USCjr loss. So we lost two games in the span Of three weeks.

I still think TN would’ve been number four if tripped anywhere down the stretch.

What will make it worse is if TCU loses and Bama goes in over TN. Wouldn’t that be something?

Sure.... But no one in their right mind would say Bama isn't one of the best 4 teams in the country if put on a neutral field with another team..... Regardless of their resumê.... And that is exactly why the CFP put us behind them even with the resumê being worse than ours.

I’ve seen nothing beyond their reputation from earlier years that indicates they are a top 4 team in 2022.

Just wait if TCU loses and Bama gets put in ahead us. There’s zero argument as to why they should be in front of us but here we are

You forget Ohio state already?
At 11-1? We played a tougher schedule than them ... we would be there.

Nothing wrong with 10-2 and the Orange Bowl, however. How many Tennessee fans would have been disappointed with that in September?

Even if they lose, they’re probably in. Otherwise you’re punishing them for playing in their conference championship (a feat neither TN or Bama was capable of) and for having a better record than either team
Playing in a conference CG doesn't seem to garner much respect from the Committee. Winning a conference championship has some cache, but not simply being invited to one.

I mean, even conference champs get left out of the CFP all the time. Every single year, in fact. More than half the time, at least two P5 conference champs get left out. And those are the champs, the winners. So the value of losing a conference CG, just getting to that game, probably doesn't weigh very heavily at all for the committee.

TCU's stronger argument for inclusion even should they lose today would be that they're one of only four teams in the country with -0 or -1 after their name.

If they lose close, I think that'll be enough. But if they get blown out, by 9-3 Kansas State, all bets are off.

Then the door is open to Bama or Tennessee. Probably Bama.

We would have been in the playoffs, no questions, had we taken care of business in South Carolina. We're not the only ones who cracked when the playoffs were at stake. Clemson lost on their home field. USC lost last night. With all 3, TN, Clem, and USC the underdog won, although I think a lot of folks thought Utah could pull the upset. It's college football. Someone posted earlier today in another thread that the season's a success if we get to the Orange or Sugar and Bama DOES NOT make the playoffs and I agree. I'm a big TCU fan today.

Don’t think it would have mattered after Hooker got hurt. Joe is uber talented for sure but quite ready for that type of primetime. Just win a quality bowl game and ride the momentum into next year

To even go further, imagine saying Hype would have us playing Clemson in Orange Bowl in year 2. Springboard season for him.

There is zilch that the likes of Michigan, TCU, Ohio State have done this season that shows me they would be favored over Alabama in a matchup....

Does Bama deserve to be in playoff contention? No. Their resumê shows that. But are they one of the best 4 teams in the country? 100%....

One can be true without the other.... Part of CFP's mandate is balancing the 4 best teams with the 4 most deserving teams. Some teams hit both marks, for example, like Georgia and Michigan... Since USC's loss last night, the final 2 spots are closer to the most deserving teams... TCU is not one of the best teams in the country... Their schedule has been trash and they will not have beaten a team with less than 4 losses all season if they go 13-0.... They are nothing more than a 13-0 Cincy or 12-0 Notre Dame that makes the playoff. Likely no great wins, but no losses....

if TCU loses, along with USC's last night, the final 2 spots are going to come down a mix of most deserving / best remaining 2 teams.... Between TCU, USC, Tennessee, Ohio State, and Alabama, I know 2 teams in that bunch that would be favored on a neutral field well above the others and that is Ohio State and Alabama... That isn't saying they deserve to make the CFP, but that is clearly stating they are the best 2 of the group of 5 teams sitting there with recent losses and no conference titles... If we had Hooker still healthy, I would say Tennessee and Alabama would be favored over the rest.

TCU losing today basically tosses the 2 best teams for spots 3 and 4 and inserts 5 teams into the "most deserving" for 2 spots.

I personally think we would've been the 3-seed if we hadn't lost to South Carolina. TCU would be the 4-seed, and USCw would've been on the outside looking in until they lost the PAC CG.

But we did lose to USCe. Even then, we would've been the 6-seed ahead of Bama if Hendon hadn't suffered his ACL tear. So right now, right this minute, we would be poised to move up into the 5-seed position with USCw's loss, and prepared to enter the 4-seed spot should TCU lose in the next few hours.

So in my estimation, it was neither of those events alone that cost us a shot at the playoffs. It was the combination of both: losing to USCe, and losing Hendon, all in a single day.

There's no chance we get into the playoffs. And I don't think there's any chance (outside of LSU beating UGa) we'll drop as low as the Cotton. So all that's left to learn tomorrow is whether we get the Sugar or Orange Bowl.

And given where we've come from just a year and a half ago, that is amazingly good. Not perfect, but very, very good.

Go Vols!

If it weird of me at this point to hope Bama makes the playoffs, gets curb stomped by Georgia way more than us, and then we have more ammo why we should have been in

As far as winning the Championship? No, we were never going to beat Georgia, even with Hooker. It would have been nice to be in the CFP, though. It's something to lament now. The end results aren't a disaster, however.
