Okay I just won't post next time I disagree. We'll keep discussion completely off the boards and just post feel good stories about moral victories.

judging from the attacks of posters who have raised any questions at all about the performance of the coaches saturday (which should be fair game anytime, anywhere), yours is a logical conclusion.

It's kind of like when a kid is heading in the wrong direction and one of the parents give them a good whoopin! That's what happened to our team with Oregon. Now we shall see if this whoopin will put our kids on the right track!

Sounded like a Dooley quote.

Speaking of Fulmer, why did we only play 11 games in the 05-06 season?

11 games was the norm for many years. In 02-03, the NCAA allowed for a 12 game schedule. In 04-05, it went back to an 11 game schedule. From 06 on, it's been a 12 game schedule.

No joke the attitude of the team seems to be alot better. Last yr they would have tucked there tail between there legs and laid down for the rest of the season.

I completely agree!! People need to give Butch a break for sure. He's gonna need more than a summer and some practice weeks to get this team where he wants it and the players are more than willing!

He's already got them where they need to be mentally. After game 3 last year the players starting giving up. He's got these guys thinking right. Just has to keep bringing in good classes and well be back.

The shock and disappointment isn't due to the player's effort, toughness, or attitude. It's that the game plan lacked any 'wow' factor and in several areas was questionable. Maybe he is saving it for the SEC schedule.

Gentlemen, sometimes it truly is impossible to see the forest for the trees. The following perspective was offered by Canard, an Oregon fan, in comparing the Dooley-coached team which he witnessed three years ago and the Tennessee team which took the field last week (post 18 of http://www.volnation.com/forum/tennessee-vols-football/202564-how-long-2.html#post9174901):

"Looking at your Scout current verbal commits, there's a lot to like about the number of HS and JC four stars lined up to help out, though the list lacks O linemen. UT shares something with Oregon, a shallow in state talent pool. This means you need tireless recruiting efforts. If CBJ is that guy, you'll be a force soon.

As a CFB junkie, I watched the cut ups here of your offense and defense these past weeks. They were somewhat funny because you could readily see how Oregon would destroy UT in all three phases. Make Worley beat you and make the D overcommit to the perimeter run.

But something else is on that tape too. CBJ is installing a system this year, results be damned. Rather than play to the strengths of a team he didn't build, he's making them play his chosen systems. That's not about this year or next, it's about re-establishing a culture of winning. It's about getting these players to be the mentors of classes yet to come. It's about playing whistle to whistle even in the face of long odds.

We faced Dooley in his first year. I saw a team that had no identity, one that the week following had LSU on death's door and let them escape via disorganization. Sloppy.

CBJ's squad was powerfully overmatched, but what I saw was organization and discipline remaining solid. The UT team didn't quit. Didn't get chippy, and fought to the end. There's a lot to build on in that. "

As you are undoubtedly aware, several of the bolded statements are almost verbatim citations of Butch's oratorical principles as they apply to coaching, all of which can be succinctly tied together by his slogan, "Brick by brick." 'tis nice to see that an Oregon fan can see the physical manifestation of those foundational principles three games into Butch Jones' first season, even if many Tennessee fans focus only on the short-term deficiencies represented on the scoreboard. Herbstreit said much the same on the ESPN GameDay show: "Tennessee's coming. Their great times are ahead of them with Butch Jones."

Players: "We're not going to play like this ever again."

UT Fans: "Excellent news! Go Vols!"

Driskel: "Crap."

Would that have been a 27 point loss? Some fans are delusional to say the least. I guess the kids weren't trying the first 2 games either but now they will.

The Oregon loss was worse than any loss Dooley had, so all this happy talk about our team's great attitude is not just meaningless but almost comical.

I'm OK with this. Just as long as we don't hear about the Srs calling a players only meeting.

"We're not going to play like this ever again," Vol Safety Brian Randolph

That was his comment after the game Saturday. You can't tell me the mentality of this team hasn't changed. Obviously there's a long way to go, but at least they're going in the right direction.

Go Vols!

I love this teams enthusiasm but the difference in talent between UT and the rest of the conference is like night and day.

Looking forward to seeing CBJ's recruits within the next few years and having us on a competitive level again.

Had Dooley been coaching that game, we would have lost by 60+ points.

Shouldn't we have started with cinderblocks?

I was thinking we should have started with a few handfuls of clay. Somebody has to make the bricks before they can be laid.

Handful of of clay by handful of clay just ain't very catchy. Would have made for a funny commercial for first tn bank. :)

Not so fast my friend, that Kentucky loss was the worst loss in my opinion. We were beat by a wide receiver. Last week we were beat by a better team who should have won. I would rather be stomped by Oregon than go down in flames against Gumtucky any day.

Love Randolph for making this statement. We need leaders, vocal leaders.... hope he continues this, develops into the alpha male on the defensive side of the ball.

That being said.... I'm afraid we're gonna see another game or 2 this year where they "play like that". Georgia game comes to mind. Not complaining or criticizing, just saying what I see. Losing badly a few times this year is gonna be part of the process IMHO.

I'm pretty sure we've heard things like this before. That "attitude" isn't any different.

"You're not gonna have Tennessee to kick around anymore."

-- Derek Dooley

I think what he meant to say was "I'm not gonna have Tennessee to kick around anymore. I'll be fired before the season is over."

I'd rather lose to Oregon By 1,000 than to lose to Kentucky Or Vandy.
