"We're not going to play like this ever again,"

I'm pretty sure we've heard things like this before. That "attitude" isn't any different.

"You're not gonna have Tennessee to kick around anymore."

-- Derek Dooley

Except Dooley was actually channeling Richard Nixon's very famous statement: "You don't have Nixon to kick around any more..."

In context of Nixon's full speech (Nixon's giving his infamous speech to the press where he claims he's been given the shaft by all the media and that this will be his last press conference so suck it media), Dooley's usage is all the more hilarious. That Dooley himself used it at media days makes it even more ironic.

That no one ever caught this is beyond me, especially when Doolz had a knack for making odd references to history/Rommel and then apologizing for the wrong thing.

That never dawned on me until now, UTProf. Thanks. Anything that highlights the ridiculousness of the Bamboo Farmer is well received.

It was not lost on me though that Doolz compared the Vol team he coached to the Nazi Army and then apologized to the Germans for his reference.

SMDH. How did that man get to coach our Vols?

Not a problem. :) I just can't believe the press didn't pick up on it. If Hunter Thompson had still been alive he'd have had a ball with it in his old ESPN column, especially after Doolz got fired.

As to Dooley getting hired...Hammy hired two coaches based on their Daddy's name despite their records as HC's. As strange as it seems I think that may be all there was to it.

One actually needed a "Daddy Clause" in his contract to get hired. At least, Doolz didn't have to bring Vince on the staff to hold his hand.

But that's who Hambone had lined up to replace our Hall of Fame coach. (SMDH).

You don't fire an HOF Coach unless you've got a proven coach lined up and waiting. You just don't, especially not in today's CFB world where more than one school has money to burn and facilities to compete. Not to mention when that coach has enough friends in the coaching world where a lot of them don't want to be the guy who replaces him under such circumstances (an AD should be able to project that would be part of the challenge too). But leave it to Hammy to make that decision without any thought about the possible consequences.

I dunno, at least Vince Dooley won a National Championship and managed to keep his W-L record above .500.

Couldn't have hurt ya know.

Should've told us all we needed to know when his momma was doing all the talking.

Love Randolph for making this statement. We need leaders, vocal leaders.... hope he continues this, develops into the alpha male on the defensive side of the ball.

That being said.... I'm afraid we're gonna see another game or 2 this year where they "play like that". Georgia game comes to mind. Not complaining or criticizing, just saying what I see. Losing badly a few times this year is gonna be part of the process IMHO.

Entirely possible, if not probable. However, there is not a team left on our schedule that can score points, like it was a pinball machine, the way Oregon did.

From the standpoint of precision execution, it really doesn't matter whether the offensive scheme is power-run based, pass-happy or balanced. Right now, Oregon executes their offense as well or better than anyone I have watched since the Oklahoma wishbone teams of old. For what little it may be worth, that opinion covers 46 years of closely observing the sport.

Ironic, because Precious is more Barbara than Vince. He looks like her and that's clearly where he got the hair. And mouth.

It's kind of like when a kid is heading in the wrong direction and one of the parents give them a good whoopin! That's what happened to our team with Oregon. Now we shall see if this whoopin will put our kids on the right track!

More like child abuse

Good points. You're spot on about Oregon for sure. I know we're still a work in progress, but we're not completely devoid of talent and I think we're a well coached, disciplined team.... and they would've scored 80 on us if they hadn't called off the dogs. Surely they're the best team in the country, aren't they?
