We're Not Young...

We are Talented, and talented enough to beat anyone in the SEC East this year. We faced a horrible Georgia team yesterday and came away with another road loss. Sorry, but this is eerily reminding me of the end of Fulmer's reign where he couldn't coach himself out of an open paper bag. Yesterday's game was ours to win, but we went in to our "let's not lose the game" vs "let's win the game" mentality.

We have the talent on the field - we just need a group of coaches to provide the leadership and direction for the team to follow.

You are a poor FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFing excuse for a fan.:banghead2::I just don't see why we cant take these 22 Freshmen we play every week and win every game by 21 fire the coach:thud:

Butch was not ready for the UT position. He's done a good job in recruiting, but he's in over his head as a tactician. He better hire an offensive coordinator, or he will never be better than about .500 in this league. We played too conservatively in the first half, and it bit us in the ass. We are still in the bottom third of this league, and that isn't going to change unless we get some coaching. I think we should pony up for a big time OC.

What's to question! I agreed that you can downplay youth. I don't think the o-line has played as bad as everyone thinks. Hurd had a good game. Worley had a great game. The o-line has to get some credit for that.

On one hand you just said that the "youth excuse was BS" and was overplayed for the last 5 years. Then when someone said that the youth excuse could be downplayed everywhere except the OL you agreed. Just seemed inconsistent.

Blaming the loss yesterday on youth is ridiculous. Play calling, Worley sitting out a few series, Georgia with a little more talent are valid excuses.

I think you can downplay youth everywhere except at the LOS.

Then you must've not really read my posts. I've said all along the youth excuse is exaggerated. IMO , youth didn't cost UT the game yesterday. I think the offensive played well at times.

Your exact words were "blaming the loss yesterday on youth is ridiculous". To you that may have meant that the youth excuse is exaggerated but I don't really think that's how anyone would read it, I know I certainly didn't. Using the word ridiculous seemed a lot more emphatic than that and therefore seemed a bit odd that you then agreed with GAVol.

I'm not into the "moral victories" and I'm sick of the excuses as well. I also firmly believe that at some point we have to do more than merely meet expectations. We have to exceed them by winning some games (emphasis on the plural) that we're not supposed to win. Otherwise we'll never get to where we all want to go, which is winning and competing for championships. However, with all of that said, the claims you make in your thread are beyond ridiculous. We are absolutely a very young football team. Most of the stars on this team are Freshman. When you watch the game it seems that pretty much every player whose name you hear called other than Worley or A.J. Johnson are either Freshmen or Sophomores. Your claim that Georgia is a "horrible" team is also ridiculous. Georgia is a very talented team that will likely win the SEC East. Finally, your premises that we weren't playing to win seems false as well. Do you remember the play before our fumble in the end zone when we threw a deep pass on 1st and 10 from our 1 yard line? Was that playing to lose? While I too am sick of the excuses, your post is simply absurd.

Drugs will be the ruin of you, son. Mark my words.

I've heard the young/depth excuse the last 5 years. How could that possibly be the same reason every year?
Maybe the word inexperienced is better for you. No matter how you slice it, we do not have the numbers of experienced players on the field of anyone we will meet this year. There, does that help you understand.:hi:

When the coach asks how many players have played in Georgia's stadium and only 13 people raise their hands........you have a young team and inexperienced team.

I might have misread that . I believe the "youth" excuse has been overplayed .

Always did, I'm saying youth is not why we lost yesterday.

Man.... If you're not doing anything would you be UT's professional director of coaching and football development. It sure sounds like you know a lot....

I'm saying it may very will be why we lost.

There is no proof that it isn't why. Very well could be that the Hurd fumble in the endzone........had it been handed off to lane, would have been a very different result. Almost a certainty, that if Whorley hadn't been sacked he would have probably completed a pass that could have changed a possession. Most every factor of the mistakes during yesterdays game can be attributed to youth and or inexperience.

Just because these young men do a lot of things very well, does not mean the mistakes can't be attributed to their youth.

Fair point. It's nice to discuss something without the name calling . Thank you.

I'm not dumb enough to think that our youth isn't a real problem, BUT... what I've seen so far is a very talented team that SHOULD start winning SOON!!! These young men have proven to be able to play with big boys and maybe WIN minus some TO'S.

SO, coach... time to start winning and winning MEANINGFUL games.

GO VOLS!!

Youth is a very valid issue on the lines and QB. Strength/Conditioning, position knowledge,a and experience are very critical to the success in these roles.

It is always easy to coach after the game. Could the OC called a couple of plays differently? Always. The key to watch is the pre-game planning and half-time adjustments. Our initial 2 series were excellent and the second half twas solid with Worley.

I'm not. It is a young team, but that's not why UT lost yesterday. The freshman played pretty damn good for the most part.

Young has a double meaning when it comes to football. It not only refers to the classification of the players but also the amount of experience players have. Look at Gilliam, he is a senior but he barely has any real game experience. He is young.

The OL is young in the experience department and that's why we lost. So technically we lost because of youth and inexperience.

I've called plenty on here idiots because of the way they choose to get their point across. I don't however think you are one of them. I don't necessarily agree with you, but you really aren't being far fetched in your points.

We have a lot of very talented young men, who have done a lot of great things already. It does not however make them immune to rookie mistakes.

Vols are young, but so are Texas A&M and Florida St at key positions. Youth should not be an excuse for losing. Vols didn't not lose yesterday because of youth

No one in division 1 football is as young as Tennessee. No other team is starting three true freshmen on the right side of their offensive line( guard, tackle, and TE). No other team has had to play 22 freshmen by game 4. The kicker is a true freshman. So, I still say the comparisons are not founded on facts and are untrue.

Another point. Most everyone is talking about how great our defense is, yet the fact of the matter is, GA scored 35 points on them yesterday. The biggest majority of those points were scored on defensive mistakes, not necessarily great offensive play. These YOUNG studs either missed a tackle, or were out of position on a pass play. Youthful mistakes.

I really think the o- line played pretty good with a few exceptions. Worley getting hurt was the main reason we lost .

Protection was the main reason Worley got hurt.

A few exceptions is the difference between a W, and an injured QB.

A few freshmen is the difference between a young offensive line, and an effective one.
