Well we’re getting conflicting information then. On a quick search I asked “what year was it when fully automatic weapons were banned” answer was 1986. I then followed by asking “Who was president in 1986?” (As if I didn’t already know). Answer was Ronald Regan. I’m sure the true answer has a lot of details and there’s more to it than just that but according to google, I wasn’t wrong.

Our laws develop in a continuum, meaning one law here and another law there, over time. A search for a simple answer often turns up a more complicated answer.

I can't remember all the twists and turns in that part of the discussion but I had a post regarding the distinction between assault "rifle" vs "weapon". The former has a fairly accepted working definition...one that does not link up with any firearms not covered by the NFA. The latter is indeed pretty much an invented term tthat, well, basically means whatever those pushing the anti agenda can make stick with people that don't know any better. You know the ones. The people that think ".30 caliber clip to disperse 30 bullets within half a second" is a real thing.
