What are the best RB trios at Tennessee and how can the current trio compare?

I get your point and in fact the way the current trio rotates, while good for the team, may limit their individual recognition. As I recall (always iffy) Lewis’s injury and his early departure for the NFL let the other guys shine.
In variance. Lewis was on a Heisman level trek his sophomore season. Henry became the workhorse to finish that season and help win the NC. In their junior seasons, Henry shone a little more while Lewis worked his way back…THEN he declared and it was Henry’s show for his senior season and Stephens redshirted to be the guy the next season. The closest they got to excelling in the same season was that junior season but only Henry and Lewis.

Stephens redshirted in ‘99 if I remember correctly.

The all-time season rushing record is held by the 1951 Vols. FWIW.

That brings back some memories…but not watching them play.

When I was a kid, my buddy’s dad was friends with Kosar and sometimes, my buddy and I got to sit in his seats - 45-yd line, west side, about 35 rows up (with the ancient alumni)…awesome seats. Herky Payne taught study hall at my HS and the students gave him all kinds of grief but liked his stories.

Wasn't there another back-up to those 3 that transferred out and beasted somewhere else?

Edit: Found it. It was Onterrio Smith in 1999. He was actually kicked off the team and ended up rushing a for back to back 1k yard seasons for Oregon.
He wasn’t in the signing class of 1997 thou.

Smith had a good NFL career going until he discovered the Whizzanator.

Smith was the third option in ‘99. Despite limited carries, he was still named as a freshman all American. He would have been terrific here had he not been kicked off the team.

Henry was a senior in 2000.
I didn’t count right then. The grand purpose of him redshirting was to be the guy his senior season especially with carries at a minimum with both Henry and Lewis gobbling up the lion’s share. Forgot he backed up Henry in 2000. Central point is he didn’t have an impressive season until it was his show.

I’ve often wondered what might have been had Cobb Webb & Thompson stayed healthy. Tony played well on his own.
CobbWebb dominated the carries and I doubt they would have split it up better as Webb’s backup. There’s a reason Webb was still on the field against PACIFIC. Majors fed his horses.

End of thread…I don’t see how you could top that combination. Foster and Hardesty overlapped but I don’t remember the third.

We’ll see where the current group goes but I don’t see them catching Jamal, Travis, and Travis.
was Houston in that group?

What's crazy is coming out of the 98 spring game which I attended; the depth chart was 1. Jamal 2 D. Stephenson 3 Travis Stephens 4. Travis Henry. Now that's the best recruiting class ever anywhere; the all time leading rusher in UT history was 4th string.
