What changes would you make?

Serious answers please. Also anyone who is saying changes should not be made are delusional, you can think no one needs to be fired, but to say "just chill bro we need talent" is absolutely insane, of course we need talent, but that does not explain why we lost to Arkansas. The truth is our coaching is an issue, not having us prepared for nearly every SEC game this year, which is why we lost to a bad Arkansas team, that ultimately kept us out of the SEC Championship game, and gave us a road game at Ohio State in the CFP. We have consistently been bad on the road and in the first half of many games. In my opinion the reason for the struggle is not play calling to our strengths, player development especially on the OL, and player discipline committing the same penalties over and over, also why cant our DB's turn their head around when defending a pass?šŸ˜•

Heupel is either smart enough to know changes are needed or heā€™s going to pull a Fulmer and keep coaches that arenā€™t carrying their weight. If he does the latter weā€™ll most likely slip right back into mediocrity.

There isnā€™t one assistant that should be comfortable right now, thus, this is the perfect time for Heupel to flat out tell them ā€œthis isnā€™t acceptableā€. Every coach should have to make the case why they should be retained. I do give Enge a bit of a pass because it was his first year and the heart & soul of the LB group was lost early in the year.

Each assistant should also be pressed what is he is going to do to take recruiting to another level as well. We need more studs across the board.

I'm not a knowledgeable football person so someone can explain it to me. We need a different route tree for our receivers....if the defense plays 2 & 3 deep coverage, stop running 3 go routes and a 5 yard sideline curl. Could we run more crossing routes maybe? I saw a lot of deep routes last night and OSU had 4 or 5 DB's deeper than our receivers......
Itā€™s hard to run crossing routes when the WRs are aligned literally 45 yards from each other

Everyone is mad at the CB coach ....can someone please let me know who are you more disappointed in the regression of.....Ricky Gibson III, the play of Jermod McCoy, or the starting freshman at Star? Maybe you think Harrisom had a rough year? I don't see him as a problem unless you have a better option available and don't say an option who is not available like Corey Raymond or Tim Walton.

Jesus dude, step away from the ledge. We don't need to start firing coaches and go back into the miserable pit of coach merry go round.
The offense didn't do as much as before because CJH did not trust Nico to make the necessary calls at the line. Remember he is just a RS freshman.

Rick Barnes has been coach for 10 years - in year 9 he finally wins the SEC and makes the sweet 16

Tony Vitello has been 7 seasons, took him 4 to get to the college world series and in the 7th to win it all

Took Pat 5 seasons to win the conference and the 8th to make the final four and 13th to win the title
Rick won the SEC in year 3 and made the Sweet 16 in year 4.

You wrote a lot of what many of us are thinking. If Iā€™m Heup and Iā€™m serious about taking this program to the next level, I would start by possibly blowing everything up and starting over from the ground up. I would start by looking in the mirror for a long time. Can I be a championship coach? What do I have to do to build a championship program? What do I have to change about how I lead this program? It starts with me.

Thatā€™s the most important area of concentration, as I see it.

Next, I would look to break everything else around meā€¦from the coaching staff, to player development, to recruiting, to mastering the current NIL and portal game, to assembling the best collection of talent every year, etc.

Heup will probably never do this, of course. He just doesnā€™t seem wired that way. Which is why we will remain a second-tier team with a ceiling of about 10-2 every year. A good team but never a great team or a championship team that can compete with the best teams in college football year in and year out. Maybe thatā€™s acceptable to some but not for me.

Again, it starts with Heup and if he can change himself as a leader of this program. Just my opinion.

I will say this: he will not last long here if we have more humiliations like we had at Ohio State. To me and my generation of Volunteers, that kind of embarrassment is just unacceptable. It cannot be tolerated and should not be tolerated.

Heupel will start next season with his seat warm in my house. If we come out next season with the same kind of cluelessness about championship football, the same lack of discipline, the same coaching ineptitude, the same lack of demonstrable progress, wellā€¦weā€™ll break out the blowtorch in our house and make that seat more than warm.

I do wish him the best because weā€™ve all seen how far heā€™s brought us. Just hope he has what it takes to make some tough decisions and take us to the next level.

As I posted elsewhere, our offense is now an issue. It has been subpar for 2 years now, and that coincides with Golseh leaving. I realize itā€™s CJHā€™s offense . . . But I doesnā€™t think our OC is much of an ā€œaddā€ at this point. I suppose he could be growing into it . . . And keeping him will most certainly be what CJH does. The risk there is a 3rd year of bad offense equals big questions for the head coach.

While the running game is good, UT is no longer producing explosive plays . . . And against great SEC / Big 10 defenses, 10-14 play drives wonā€™t happen.

In 2022 UT was number 1 in the country in explosive plays. This year we were 12th . . . In the SEC.

Our oline is subpar and our WRs are very mediocre.

Coaching wise, I donā€™t see him getting rid of his OC. I would recommend a new Oline coach and WR coach . . .

If he does neither, and this offense looks for a 3rd year to be this bad against the really good teams . . . He will be forced to clean house on the offensive side of the ball.

Talent wise - they have to hope Matthews or someone emerges and that the portal helps them with the Oline.

The path for CJH to truly contend for a SEC title is an elite offense with at least a conference average to a little above average defense.

Nico is the least of our issues. The Oline can't block, our WR's have the most drops of any team in CFB , our secondary outside of McCoy continues to be trash. Ellarbee,Haizle, Pope and Martinez all need to be upgraded. This is NOT a Championship type of coaching staff. And it's not even close

Iā€™m going to Golesh and asking him how much he would want to come back. Give him a blank check and a pen. Back up the Brinks truck. Give him associate HC title, whatever it takes.
Agreed. I explained earlier sports coaching is a sales job with a product. If saban went to Kent St to coach no one would go, but if he went 4 wins year 1 to 9 wins every year for 6 years and beat some major schools in "cupcake" games they would consider. I'd laugh as a 5 star at year 1 heupel offering me a spot on the team.

If kids growing up through high school see the vols in the playoffs every year I bet the farm some of them 5 stars start to say "wow mom i got an offer from Tennessee!!!!!!"

Too good and too true not repost:

ā€œQuit telling me Heupel is the OC and nobody else matters. If he is the OC, he needs to fire himself. Joey Halzle isn't good enough as either a QB coach or quasi-OC. Stevie Wonder, Ronnie Millsap and Helen Keller could see that Glen Elarbee isn't the answer in the offensive line and WR coach Kelsey Pope is guilty until proven innocent. Bring in a new OC who you can work with and have that OC help recruit new coaches for the offensive line and receiver rooms. Do it now before you get in a crisis mode a year from now.ā€

This is from one of TBā€™s guys - I know many you give TB grief but there is a lot if truth here.

Our DBs? Ok obviously you donā€™t know how good OSUs WRs actually are. Yes Arkansas was a bad loss. Inexcusable. Bad losses happen. OSU lost to a bad Michigan team. ND list to NIU.

Anybody see the pictures of the UT players shirtless before the game ? Looked like an advertisement for a doughnut shop instead of football players on the field, but let's not change anything. Getting pushed around on both lines is acceptable for people not wanting change. Year 4 and they haven't built up or developed the lines.

Make the playoffs and start firing coaches. Such a great idea.

Ridiculous

We need to beef up the roster and increase the skilled depth. Playing and 8 or 9 game SEC schedule means your team is going to be beat up by playoff time. We lost Samson, White and Thornton early in the game. No telling how many guys were banged up. It just takes more.

Primarily, the OL would get šŸ’Æ attention. Got blasted on here saying Nico was the better QB in the game....whereas Howard only hit the ground once, going some 24 for 29. Fine. But put Nico behind their line, what do you think his stats would be? So for the third year, fix the damn OL. If that's firing Ellerbee, fine. Don't care, fix it. The OL isn't championship caliber. It's funny how the OL doesn't show up when the competition is better, you know, like in games you need to win to get into things like the SECCG.
