i think it's a huge stretch for someone to see gold there. the only part that comes close to looking like gold is the very top portion, and as I stated earlier, I understand somebody not completely seeing black there. gold though? i just don't see it. i just see a very faded black/grayish color.

regardless, the only thing i was arguing with you was the ACTUAL colors of the dress, not what colors the photo might portray.

Hi! me and some other grad students have been discussing this for the last half hour. It's likely due to some kind of colour constancy illusion, where some people are perceiving the context to be something like "lit by blueish daylight" and others are perceiving it to be something like "under yellow department store lights." In the former case, your brain will try and get the objective (if such a thing can be said) colour by subtracting out the blue as a shadow, and in the latter case it will do the same thing for the filigree by subtracting out the yellow as a reflection. This is a common illusion in psych : See here. but it's not seen that often 'in the wild,' even though your brain does this constantly.

Color does not exist, it is "made up" by your brain. So some people's brains interpret the dress in different colors, depending in the lighting their eyes see and is received by the brain. And it can change.

That dress is in different lighting and shadows. That's the whole point of this. The dress is in the perfect light and shadows to cause an optical illusion and confuse people's brains into what color they are seeing.

I've seen 1,000 posts on Facebook, and even on here still gold and white. My wife says its blue and brown.

I've seen good illusions and that's a bad one if that's what it's "supposed" to be.

I see a black and blue dress that's been either washed too many times or just faded over time to look brown/gold and a light blue. The lighting makes it seem like the blue part is white when it's just really faded making it look that way.

It's not an optical illusion, it is what it is. Photoshop confirms the black area is in the brown spectrum, the white area is in the blue spectrum.

Could only see white and gold until now. Held phone sideways (not directly facing) in the mirror and could tell it was not white in the reflection. Looked at phone again and it was blue and faded black.

This is the devil's dress.

Does contrast help? I still see the same. Faded black turned brownish and blue.

ok weird, when i first saw it it was white and gold, clicked the link and read up on it, when i came back it was black and blue. *****
