What do the high caliber OOC games do for us?

I have asked this question in the past, and I will ask it again.

What on earth makes these games worth it to our program right now? If I remember correctly our winning % in these games is around .333% the past 10 years and it has even kept us out of bowl games multiple times recently.

So, can someone please explain to me why this program gets more from a blowout lose to Oregon than a bowl appearance and 2 extra weeks of practice?

Enough is enough. Until this program gets turned around, its time to schedule W's instead of embarrassing losses.

Absolutely nothing, it's ridiculous. The W is worth more than than the drachmas. They'll typically use the football team to market the academia. That's why Vandy played UMass this year.. To expose the Nee Englanders. But forget the upper left coast quacks and Midwestern prairie dogs... We need w's!!!

Allow us to play across the nation (/ in other states across the nation) and be seen nationally, which Tennessee has regularly had to do for recruiting reasons as to make up for the comparative lack of in-state talent.

So without the embarrassment to Oregon, Tennessee wouldn't have the #2 recruiting class right now?

Is that your argument?

Agree. Right now it does nothing but make us look like a ridiculous laughingstock. Oregon would've put 87 points on us if they hadn't called off the dogs. How does that do anything to help our program? This program desperately needs, along with a lot of talent, some confidence and belief that it can win. Getting blown out by a national power on national tv for the whole country to see is counterproductive to rebuilding the program.

These games aren't scheduled a year in advance. They are sometimes scheduled literally a decade in advance. This is just another example of things that most fans don't even understand.

Back when we weren't pathetic, it was a point of pride to most of us fans. Now, I just shake my head. Until this program turns it around, we aren't going to beat anyone OOC who isn't a member of the Sun Belt Conference. And some of those teams would have a real chance at beating us.

We understand it. We also know that these games, embarrassing though it is, can and should be bought out in the short term.

I understand that Tennessee was able to cancel our series with UNC.

Don't pretend these things are carved in stone.

I'm saying the reason we keep scheduling home and homes with teams like Cal, UCLA, Oregon, and other teams from more talent-rich states over the years (another example, trying to schedule one with OSU that they cancelled) has been to compensate for the relative lack of in-state talent in this state; the school doing so by regularly playing the main teams in more talent-rich states so as to better establish recognition/be seen and hopefully better establish future recruiting ties to those areas or states.

As for whether these teams are good or not the year the game actually happens, these home and home agreements are made anywhere from 4-8 years in advance. There's no way of knowing how good either team will be when these agreements are actually made.

The school has to pay a set some of money each time they do as well...you don't just cancel.

And the amount probably varies relative to how close to the year of the game it is cancelled.

Truthfully, a 6 win team with 2 conference wins, 3 wins against Sun Belt teams, and a win against an FCS team is no more admirable than what we are seeing now.

Might as well continue to go for the gusto. Just my opinion, though.

A winning program participating in bowl games generates a lot more money than a program sitting at home because they decided to get embarrassed by an OOC team on national television.

This isn't necessarily true. Unless you're in a bowl that's worth a damn, there's a chance it could actually COST you money to go bowling.

This program desperately needs wins, self confidence and belief that it can/will win. Going to Oregon, and likely Oklahoma as well, and getting embarrassed does nothing to move the needle forward. Take a couple year hiatus from these big games IMHO, until we are to the point where we can compete with these teams again.

How many players did we PHYSICALLY lose against Oregon?...We didn't get physically mauled against our big ooc opponent and I don't foresee that against Okie the next two seasons..let's nut up and maybe they'll wuss out in future scheduling when our team starts shining...then we can look forward to threads menstrual cramping about us playing directional state U

Unless your competing for national titles every year there is no reason to schedule tough OOC games! The Vols are in rebuild mold. The goal is to get back to bowl games. U can't do that by getting stomped by the Oregon's and Oklahoma's.

Not really. Bowl revenue is split 15 ways with each team getting a share and the SEC getting the last bit. Regular season attendance gates are pure money to the school.

We are the Vols, we play anybody, any time, we ain't scared.

'We ain't scared', but that is no reason to throw all common sense to the wind. These games hurt our program more than help it right now.

Until we get back on our feet, it's time to start scheduling some W's.

I've been thinking about this recently myself.

I definitely think we should have an easier OOC schedule while in rebuild mode. It just looks better in the W-L column and builds player confidence. Having to take this team on the road against Oregon in the third game of the year was simply brutal. Having to face OU next year also suxes.

I usually say never back down from anyone, but we need to be realists also.

Having said that, I am looking forward to the OU game because I have a good friend that is an OU grad and we are planning to attend the game together.

Replacing Orefon with another Sunbelt or weaker MAAc team would have probably meant we would be bowling this year. That alone would have helped our rebuild. Unfortunately it's not that easy... Back in 2003 when we scheduled Oregon we thought we'd be padding our schedule lol.
