What do the high caliber OOC games do for us?

They give us another L on the schedule. Bama doesn't play anyone out of conference worth a flip. There is a reason.

They've played Clemson and Virginia Tech...not exactly Sun Belt there

If you are a national title contender, you need those quality wins to gaurantee you get seleceted for the four team play-off. Since you have to schedule these games 6 to 12 years in advance, you don't know when you are going to be back in the hunt, thus you have to schedule like we will be there in 2016.

Ohio State doesn't need a tough OOC schedule, nor does Auburn or Mizzou.

As the playoffs start picking an additional 2 teams next year, the need for these games becomes even more unnecessary.

As cool as these games are, they are only holding our program back.

How far in advance are these games scheduled?

I am looking forward to the okie game. I'll be there. It's just a couple hours from the house for me and the Okies are good people.

I have asked this question in the past, and I will ask it again.

What on earth makes these games worth it to our program right now? If I remember correctly our winning % in these games is around .333% the past 10 years and it has even kept us out of bowl games multiple times recently.

So, can someone please explain to me why this program gets more from a blowout lose to Oregon than a bowl appearance and 2 extra weeks of practice?

Enough is enough. Until this program gets turned around, its time to schedule W's instead of embarrassing losses.

These games keep us from going bowling every year. Wish we had Vandy's schedule.

I believe the Oklahoma game was scheduled back in 2007.

So ooc games are scheduled 6-7 years out. It's kind of hard I would think to speculate if these teams will be powerhouses.

Kind of like when arkie had back to backs with USC. They were on the rise. The hogs were beat like a rented mule.

Everyone complains that Tennessee is going outside the norm on this but that is simply not the case. Think about it, UF, USCe, UGA, UK all have OOC rivals they play every year and Tennessee does not. It's actually an advantage to be able to schedule these games. Now if you want to argue for Purdue over Oregon then I'll listen. But these games are scheduled 30 years away so you don't know who will be good.

If I were a recruit I would not want to go to a school that plays an OVC out of conference schedule.

The best example of this is Alabama. They have really improved their program since improving their OOC schedule. If you want to be the best you have to play the best.

An even better examples are Miami and FSU. Those programs were faceless in the mid-70's Both Schnellenbergar and Bowden scheduled the best teams in the country to build a reputation of playing anybody anywhere. Both teams started recruiting players that wanted to be winners and became two of the top teams in the country.

If you want to kill recruiting talk about your great games against UAB, South Alabama, Buffalo, etc. The real players like the big stage.

Allow us to play across the nation (/ in other states across the nation) and be seen nationally, which Tennessee has regularly had to do for recruiting reasons as to make up for the comparative lack of in-state talent.

We're not relying on these other regions to supply our class so that's dumb logic even if it's the administration on the Hill who thinks that. We're probably getting one kid every other year from the west coast if that. And i highly doubt it's because we played a game out there.

Playing a bunch of cupcakes doesn't seem to be hampering Alabama or Auburn's bowl projections.

Alabama is playing name teams not elite programs. The only one of these OOC games they played that we thought would be elite was the UM game a few years ago, and maybe Clemson in '08. They keep playing this Chick Fila KO vs VT. Sure they're a good program but why aren't they playing FSU or Clemson now a days? And they won't schedule a home and home for the life of them. Bama knows exactly what they're doing. Play a team good enough to boost your schedule, especially in voters minds, but one that has no shot of beating you.

You can't be great unless you play great teams.

And truckloads of cash helps..

We could schedule Georgia southern like Florida did. That worked out so much better for them. Quite frankly, this year we could have easily lost to whatever scrub team we replaced Oregon with

Sure right now we are more competitive with teams like Troy and South Alabama but that is not how we need to be seen by elite recruits. I'd rather be associated with the higher ranked teams. In a couple years we will start winning those games again

Works for Vandy...we're better

If U play in the SEC U have a tough schedule every year. There's no reason to add to that. Not only is Vandy academically superior, the administration and football team is better than UT right now. UT cut their own throats. This isn't 1998, start acting like it.

A winning program participating in bowl games generates a lot more money than a program sitting at home because they decided to get embarrassed by an OOC team on national television.

When we are back to winning again I would much rather watch UT/Ok than UT/S.Ala. UT has always played one good one a year and won our share of them. Who wouldnt want to watch a good game on primetime than a ppv game at 1. Gimme a break.

Yea Ala had a brutal s SEC schedule..rolling eyes..One good OOC game should be the norm. No true fan wants to watch 4 hortible OOC games. Give me UT vs OR/Okl/Neb/USC once a year anyday.

One thing the OOC conference games do is not only keep you out in front in the national discussion. But it also serves as a reward to fans. Every single person I have talked to who has given up their single tickets has mentioned the "preseason" type games that they have to pay for as a reason. Its not the only reason or even one of the most important, but it is a reason.

Go back to your Vandy board and tell the other five guys on there how to root for their program...And knock yourself out with scheduling talk....we're better than you and you can't change that by camping out on our site while we're in transition...enjoy your success while it lasts....we're the better program and will schedule accordingly.
