So at this point in the CJH era, what does everyone think we have in him as a head coach? When you look at him and his body of work so far, what do you see? Do you see a coach that can bring conference championships and playoff berths to the program or do you see it different?

Personally what I see is a coach that has brought much needed stability and a healthy culture to the program. I see a coach that will consistently bring 8 to 9 wins a year with the occasional 10+ win season. And I see a coach that will have us in a decent to very good bowl game each year and for now, that's good enough!

Up to this point the only thing I dont see in CJH is a dynamic recruiter that will consistently get us top 5 nationally which is what you absolutely need to have to contend for SEC conference titles. That's my only real concern going forward in the CJH era.

So far, what I see at least from a recruiting standpoint to this point, has been pretty remarkable. Given our recent history, I'm not sure how we could ask for much more at this point. His brand certainly has us in the hunt for young men we wouldn't normally be in the hunt for. If we can get the defensive side of the ball figured out, watch out. Coach seems like a genuine person, I think that endears him to many, and to me it is refreshing.

I think he's a players coach and a great offensive mind. I also think he caught lightning in a bottle with Hooker and this roster/schedule this season. My questions will be how he handles staff members who aren't getting it done on the field and in recruiting. Too loyal or will he do the hard thing and make a change? My biggest question is how good is he and this staff at evaluations and development along with roster management. Can he find and develop the players we need to consistently contend in the east and challenge the likes of bama/uga on an annual basis? We won't have that answer until he's flipped this roster and filled it with his kids. I remain hopeful but guarded in that regard.

You mean, besides the fact that we were top 5 nationally when the CFP rankings came out? You mean, besides the fact that we were #1 with victories over UF, Pitt, LSU and ALA? And still #4 after a Loss to UGA?

You mean, the coach that had us set up to be in the CFP in year 2 of a massive rebuild with only one draft class under his belt here?

That is the coach you do not believe leads us to the CFP?

I think he has surpassed expectations, especially with what was left on the roster when he took over, after year 2 he is 17-8 overall and 10-6 in SEC, pretty darn remarkable. He has shown he can recruit, now he needs to establish consistency in winning and developing players. Losing Golesh hurts somewhat but Heupel will call plays seamlessly until he gets his new OC. The verdict is out on his DC Banks, defense improved in many areas this season but the pass defense was atrocious, if he cant get it done, Heupel will need to make a change sooner than later and make an excellent hire for DC.

Going into the season there schedule was pretty brutal. LSU Georgia on the road. Bama fla at home certainly never gimmes even Pitt was thought may be better than last year. As far as Hendon I will for the most part agree but on that Coach should get some credit for the play of Hendon. It's not like he was tearing it up at VT.

We were 30 minutes from the CFP in Year 2. Josh Heupel is the right guy at the right time. We have an identity. We know what and who we are, and it’s only going to get better. I’m a man I’m 40, and I’ve never had more confidence going into a weekend that our offensive minds will be able out scheme whoever is across the field on the opposite sideline.

It also sets up perfectly Given the circumstances surrounding college football w/ the transfer portal and NIL. We just had the first Biletnikoff winner in the very storied history of our program, that’s incredible given that we were once known as “WR U”. This is Year 2. Players want to come here.

I don’t think it’s unfair to start having expectations that we can consistently be a CFP team each year beginning in 2024. Hooker, Hyatt, Tillman etc… have laid the foundation. Hopefully we can capitalize off what they have started and finish the job.

Something that has seemed to have flown under the radar this Fall is the almost absence of kids behaving badly. That generally means that the coach and his staff are instilling morals and good behavior patterns in these young men. For years and years, I have hated to watch the ESPN NCAAF ticker, for if Tennessee made the headlines, quite often it was about disciplinary issues w our players. Coach Heupel, while not perfect, seems to have stemmed the tide on this issue, and this is a HUGE benefit to our program, players and University - not to mention those of us diehard VN fans.

Heup is an offensive guru, motivator, developer, and shows genuine care for his players, staff, and the university.

I can't wait to see what he does next.
It's nice to have a coach that while you watch a press conference your not annoyed. He is genuine and never throws his players under the bus. It's been very refreshing.

It’s probably that and the UT administration being on the same page in order to clean up issues before I go becomes public. Randy Boyd being a local guy and not someone from outside the area plays a giant role in that.

It all comes down to recruiting and roster management in the portal/NIL era. He's checked the other boxes for the most part. I think he's done pretty good with the roster so far. I am concerned that will be the weak link in his tenure.

Threads like this are pretty amazing to me. Prior to this season, it was all about “winning season, blah blah blah, but can he beat one of the big three?”

And this year he beats Florida AND alabama, and now we are questioning. The way I see it, we have ONE chance to gain stability and build to becoming the program we once were. It’s CJH. Fire him, and we can get ready for another decade of REALLY stinking. He came here when nobody else (or few others) would. We just finished a 10-2 season. It’s amazing how some people will never be happy.

So far I am impressed Heup. He can coach but as far as our limit probably depends on the NIL as much as his coaching. So far it seems like we have jumped on the NIL so I am very hopeful for getting very good players. I think UT will be a consistent top 10 program with a playoff appearance being a possibility most years.

Wow, you are painting with an oversized brush and using the wrong color. I haven't seen any posts that call for firing or say anything about being unhappy with Heupel. It's possible to be happy with who, what and where the Vols are at this point. It's also possible to logically discuss the issues that are important/unproven going forward. Leftist thinking has truly infected the minds of America.

I think we have a really good Xs and Os coach it’s yet to be determined if he can build and sustain a championship program.

Pleased as punch so far. This season will tell us a LOT. He will finally be playing a large number of his own recruits. He will have to adjust and switch from an absolute miracle of a QB and replace at least 2 early early round NFL receivers. He will have to replace an OC with whom he was very comfortable. And most critically, he will have to ensure some solid gains on the defensive side of the ball. If he does these things well, he will not be merely a good coach but will have demonstrated that he is a great coach.

I think there are 2 outliers to the season schedule that stand out. We go on the road and blow out LSU and we go on the road and get blown out by SC. As I've stated many times on VN, you typically win one you shouldn't and lose one you shouldn't. The blow outs in both of these games are what doesn't make sense. Outside of those 2 games, the season went pretty much status quo. Getting Bama and Florida at home was key also.
