What do we really have with CJH?

You mean, besides the fact that we were top 5 nationally when the CFP rankings came out? You mean, besides the fact that we were #1 with victories over UF, Pitt, LSU and ALA? And still #4 after a Loss to UGA?

You mean, the coach that had us set up to be in the CFP in year 2 of a massive rebuild with only one draft class under his belt here?

That is the coach you do not believe leads us to the CFP?

THIS^
and if he is not the one, I mean who is?
I will say I'm pulling for Joe MIII to take us to new height's BUT if after Va/Peay@UF/UTSA & USCjr we are not 5 & 0 or at least 4 & 1 with a close controversial loss. I mean 4 out of 5 of our 1st games are at home, we are 7 & 0 this year at Neyland. I think the QB situation should be checked by Josh. Don't go with the Pruitt JG scenario or even when coaches keep saying he practices great etc... If Joe doesn't do it this time, it's in his head and can't be cured. The moment is too big. Just so many chances. We've been through he can make all the throws. Hes great in practice etc.
. Michigan thought he was the one until he wasn't we thought he was until he wasn't, or he got hurt can't remember & then Hooker balled out. Just don't think he should wait too long like Dabo did at Clemson.

I'm surprised with how good of a game day coach Heupel is. He seems to win in crucial periods of the game such as the last 2 minutes of the half. I can't think of many times this year where he mismanaged time or deciding to punt/kick/go for it. He's shown improvement year of year in game day coaching.

I think that when the idea of his "gimicky" offense is disproven, and the other coaches move on from that, the recruits will come. When the recruits see that he will stay, and can win we should be contending for championships from then on.

It’s quite obvious that he is the best coach we have had since the Majors into early Fulmer era. Every other coach in between has been a schmuck compared to CJH and Fulmer wasn’t much without Cutt.

I think he's a coach that will consistently get us in a 12 team playoff and competing for an SEC championship on a yearly basis. Outside of 1 awful game this year were in the playoff in year 2. I'm certainly happy to have him after the previous 4 coaches.

Threads like this are pretty amazing to me. Prior to this season, it was all about “winning season, blah blah blah, but can he beat one of the big three?”

And this year he beats Florida AND alabama, and now we are questioning. The way I see it, we have ONE chance to gain stability and build to becoming the program we once were. It’s CJH. Fire him, and we can get ready for another decade of REALLY stinking. He came here when nobody else (or few others) would. We just finished a 10-2 season. It’s amazing how some people will never be happy.
That LSU game was big also its not that we won but how we won. Complete domination and a lot of us had that as a loss. That game to me was an eye opener not that the others weren't but was glad to get that "W" in that fashion. Taking over their stadium!

Wow, you are painting with an oversized brush and using the wrong color. I haven't seen any posts that call for firing or say anything about being unhappy with Heupel. It's possible to be happy with who, what and where the Vols are at this point. It's also possible to logically discuss the issues that are important/unproven going forward. Leftist thinking has truly infected the minds of America.

Hold on a minute. You can’t accuse me of painting with an oversized brush, and then attribute my frustration to “leftist thinking.”

I agree that we can logically discuss the unproven issues, so I regret coming off as someone who believes we can’t. It’s just hard for me to understand how anyone could look at our coach as being anything but an outright success—particularly given this year’s outcome. But to me, it appears everything is trending in an upward direction. My frustration only comes from this tendency for us to always see the “grass on the other side” as greener.

I see a coach who took a Total Mess when he came and turned it around quick!!!! If he can win 8-9 on a down year and compete for playoffs every year when it expands, he should be here a long time!!! We have a very good coach!!!!!

The difference between the number 1 recruiting class and the number 10 recruiting class isn't anywhere near as astronomical as people make it out to be. I'd definitely like to see us a little higher but finding the right mix of talent and people that work with what huepel wants to do will be key. I trust them to be able to recognize talent just as good if not better than the recruiting services do especially for what they want to do compared to some other schools.

Three more recruiting classes so we can stockpile, then see if we can plug n play like the elites, but he's done more with less, very impressive

So at this point in the CJH era, what does everyone think we have in him as a head coach? When you look at him and his body of work so far, what do you see? Do you see a coach that can bring conference championships and playoff berths to the program or do you see it different?

Personally what I see is a coach that has brought much needed stability and a healthy culture to the program. I see a coach that will consistently bring 8 to 9 wins a year with the occasional 10+ win season. And I see a coach that will have us in a decent to very good bowl game each year and for now, that's good enough!

Up to this point the only thing I dont see in CJH is a dynamic recruiter that will consistently get us top 5 nationally which is what you absolutely need to have to contend for SEC conference titles. That's my only real concern going forward in the CJH era.

Perhaps he will have a Fulmer or Majors type tenure in longevity.

Who was the last SEC champion with classes outside the top 5?

I see a coach who had us ranked #1 in the country for a bit, missed the CFP by a HAIR in year 2, and will finish top 10 in the nation in rankings and recruiting.

Next step, beat Georgia.
And pay back Beamer and the Chickens WITH INTEREST

That's the eye opening thing is doing more with less. The day saban was pulling his hair out we were out coaching him with way less talent. That's when I knew we had a coach.

I think we have a guy who's earned his stripes, wasn't born on third base. As a former QB, he's cool under pressure, which I think translate to the players. Seems to be building a culture we will all be proud of; that takes a special leader, which is what Coach seems to be..........

People are all guessing. No one knows diddly squat about what he will accomplish here. No one.

Maybe Tennessee's at the start of a new era. Maybe it's Kirby digging in for the long haul. Or maybe it's at the end of a 2019 LSU sort of year; super-senior QB that makes an offense hum, followed by a fall off. Who knows? For every Lincoln Riley there's a Mel Tucker. So who knows?

We can guess though. And Heupel's track record has some tendencies. He runs a tempo program. His teams almost never win TOP. His defenses have to play 35-40 minutes a game. His teams have historically struggled with penalties. His teams have also scored - a lot. He knows how to find mismatches. He manages his own gameplan; that is, he's not a "CEO coach." And most importantly of all, he wins a pretty good amount, too.

Will taking his formula and adding SEC talent make it a champion approach? Again, everyone's just guessing. I certainly hope so though. Oregon had some great years where their tempo offense seemed unstoppable - until it got stopped by good defenses. Seen a lot of programs have seasons like that. Big flashy show, lots of scoring, but couldn't cash in at the end. I'm very hopeful though that Tennessee, with its resources and brand, can be one that does.

The one thing I do think we know is this - what Tennessee does next year with a less consistent starting QB and two young backup signal callers is going to tell us a whole lot about how Heupel will do in Knoxville over the next five years (or more, hopefully). I do love that he coaches without fear. Year 1, he made Alabama pay attention. Year 2, he made Alabama pay the bill. A lot of guys would "get your popcorn ready" that situation, but he went about his business and won that game. So I'm hopeful.

It’s probably that and the UT administration being on the same page in order to clean up issues before I go becomes public. Randy Boyd being a local guy and not someone from outside the area plays a giant role in that.

Well, we will take the help from anywhere but, if we don't have the problems, we don't have to ask others to clean them up, right???

I think we have exactly the coach this team needs. What he has accomplished in two years is nothing short of extraordinary.
