I was trying to find it but in 1996 when there was a possibility of him running to many things happened to Powell and his family and the family agreed it would not be worth the cost for the run.

Powell is an extraordinary person!

I hope he does reconsider at some point in the future. That will alleviate one of the biggest problems I have with politics... being a leaderless pack of power wolves.

So a career military man won't run for POTUS because his wife will not let him because she fears he will be assassinated? You are serious?

Probably the most high profile target in the world is the President... it wouldnt surprise me. But at the same time it does because he seems like a man who would answer the call if he got it. Maybe he just doesnt think that his chances are that realistic.

I don't know enough about the man to care either way. Just seemed odd, a man spending his life in the military and his wife not allowing him to run for office because she is scared he'll get killed.

It is a family issue..... the entire family being under persecution......

I can respect that....

Oh I can certainly understand that.

In fact, considering what some of these politicans are willing to put their family members through, I really wonder what type of people they are and what they are so hard after.

A man the Army has groomed to be Chief of Staff probably doesnt sit on the front lines. Although the job has it's dangers, lets not pretend he was a bullet sponge for 40 years :)

Like I said, I don't know much about the man. I can only assume he wasn't sheltered his entire military career.

He was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman's Badge so he has seen combat. He was an advisor for a year before American involvment in Vietnam (62-63) and later served as a Field Grade Officer for the 3rd AD from 68'-69'. I wasn't disparaging his accomplishments... only meant to note that he probably had not led patrols for the entire 35 years he was in the Army.

Maybe he thinks that without everyones help from both sides he wouldn't be able to accomplish a whole lot .

this crowd needs to do some homework on Powell.

He was CJCS after never really having a 3 or 4 star command. The strong leader types are after the commands, not the DC positions.

Powell was the perfect politician because he rarely, if ever, took a position on anything. That made him great in the Washington scene, but not on the troop leading front. That's exactly why he wasn't commanding forces in the ME or Korea.

if you're under the impression that Americans are going to unite and stop voting you're insane. There are always going to be hordes of wealthy, with something real at stake, on each side of the aisle who will continue to fund candidates and will continue to spend dollars for voters and future influence.

I heard Bob Barr on the John Gibson radio show yesterday afternoon. He (Barr) kept referring to himself in the third person. Anybody who speaks about themselves in the third person is to be avoided.
