What do you realistically expect for the Vandy game?

How about a W? I used to love when we used to put 2 Ws down for the season on those last 2 games of the year (Usually Vandy and Kentucky) at the beginning of the year.

Remember Majors always said "they remember what you do in November" of course we always played Mississippi or Memphis, Kentucky and Vanderbilt.

Dooley found out this was still true.

My opinion? We get our asses kicked. Hopefully not but we are rebuilding AGAIN! It's gonna take a while. Vandy has done two things we couldn't. Beat Georgia and Florida. IN THE SAME FREAKING YEAR!!!!!!!!!!

Vols win by 2+ touchdowns in my opinion. We play great at home (sans Auburn) and the crowd's energy will be the difference, especially considering it's a night game. I also think people are giving Vandy too much credit as well, have not been impressed with their offense at all the last two games. I've got faith that Butch will have the team fired up and ready to play, and that we smack them in the mouth early with a huge first quarter.

I'm with you, and welcome to VN...:hi:

Unfortunately so. Our program has been screwed by the previous hires. We think we can beat Vandy. Vandy knows they can beat us. That's the problem. Until we get players that are championship caliber we ain't beating nobody. Spurrier should be ran out of town for losing to us. Butch will get it back but it's gonna take take a long while

BS, Franklin's going to try and convince them they can beat us, but when they roll into Neyland...Their still Vandy and know they will leave with a lose

That Vandy team knows, at most, one win against UT. Our team has players that are 2 and 1 against Vandy.

Franklin is 1-1 against UT, and 1-2 against any current or former Vol coach.

Seems to me that your assertion is backwards. It should read that our team knows they can beat Vandy based off of the past , Vandy believes they can beat us off of one performance.

My prediction: UT wins. I don't care if it's close and ugly or by 150 points. Although, if I were Butch and had the unlikely opportunity to run the score up, I wouldn't hold back under any circumstances.

Expectations?

Beat Vandy like a drum and send Franklin come crying! 100-0 would not be bad enough!

Vanderbilt didn't look to sharp against UK. Plus their wins over uga and florida were greatly contributed too by injuries. They'll play us tough but not enough to win after we've had a week off and at Neyland. I honestly believe we have an ok-average team, we've just played and been exposed by top notch competition with the attrition of constant top 10 teams wearing on us. It'll be fun to watch us play against someone were not hideously outmatched by. Give Butch time!

Expectations, loss.Hope we will win. After what they did to us last year, with the same crappy defense&our offense isn't nearly as good as last year's. Just being realistic.

I expect/hope for us to win convincingly enough that Vandy leaves with no momentum. I do not want to give them the footing they need to become a problem to us. So far this season they've beaten UGA & UF, and we didn't. I don't think we need them to be able to say that they beat us two years in a row too. We need this one by any means, but a 10-14 point win would be better.

A W...season is failure otherwise.

This season is not a failure regardless of what happens. We beat the #11 team in the country. The same team that is likely going to play for the SEC title. To judge a teams failure or success on one game is stupid.

If we let Vandy ruin the chances for a bowl game, after the effort the team put in against GA and Fl, it's a failure

With an uncle who coached baseball there during the late 1960s and 1970s, I have endured 40 years of intrafamilial trash-talking, regardless of the football fortunes of our respective programs. Consequently, I have developed a Cafegoesque contempt for the Commodes. For that reason, I must confess that any shred of objectivity gets thrown out the window when Vanderbilt football, let alone James Franklin, is mentioned. However, after viewing the Vanderbilt-Kentucky game, I will say only that this Commode squad, with the exception of Jordan Matthews, does not impress me. I know that they will come into Neyland brimming with confidence and they would love nothing better than to knock us out of bowl contention. They create turnovers, most notably interceptions, and maximize their scoring opportunities. I would be more concerned about this year’s edition of the Black and Gold if our annual matchup was held in Nashville, on the last game of the season, and both teams were fighting to earn bowl eligibility.

None of this really matters, however, because I am convinced that Butch will approach this game as a stake-your-lance-in-the earth, draw-a-line-in-the-sand-and-fight-to-the-death game, one in which he will leave no motivational tool unused. He has made it abundantly clear that achieving bowl eligibility is of paramount importance to Team 117 and that the recruitment of instate talent will be the foundation of his recruiting strategy for the program. He understands the need to leave no doubt whatsoever that the University of Tennessee is the only logical choice for any home-grown, SEC-caliber football player, and the best way to communicate that message is by annually beating the unholy feces out of Vanderbilt.

I would imagine that Butch will repeatedly challenge the manhood of our offensive linemen this week and exhort them to collectively take the team on their backs. To paraphrase a quote from Rudy, “pound on [Vandy] like they were your worst enemies” and drive them all the way into the Tennessee River (when moving toward the south end zone) or to the top of the Hill (when scoring in the North end zone). If we can unleash a dominating ground game, minimize turnovers and keep Josh out of risky down-and-distance situations, we will emerge victorious.

Under ordinary circumstances, I would consider a “Beat Vandy bonfire” beneath the dignity of the University of Tennessee, but these are not ordinary times. Butch will marshal every scintilla of support possible from the student body and Big Orange Nation. I will refrain from predicting a final score as rivalry games can go from nailbiters to routs in a relative heartbeat, but I do expect Butch to secure his second victory over Vanderbilt. What are your expectations/predictions?

I expect a Vandy win. I'll settle for a 1 point victory but a blow out like last year would be awesome too!

I don't think it is stupid when the one game could cost you your season's goal of going to a bowl game.
Failure=Falling short of set goals.

Sorry but I disagree. Even if we lose the next two I will not consider it a failure. Now if we lose to Vandy next year, I will worry.

This absolutely true. Unlike many, I will not be in pitchfork and torch mode, but I would call the season failure if they lose to either VU or KU for the reason this poster states.

A bowl is the equivalent of an extra spring practice. It's three more weeks of keeping the team together, coaching, building team, etc. Also, because there is break before and it stretches the season close to January, it significantly shortens the down time for the program before next spring. Most will agree that these are valuable to success.

I think CBJ needs it for all the reasons above and moreover maybe just for the emotional value it provides the fan base. I think most of us would be pretty happy just to watch one more game this year.

If the team doesn't get a bowl bid, it's a setback. And it is in fact a "failure" as the goal of the program was to make it to a bowl. CBJ has stated as much.

Now, does this necessarily translate to future failures? No, it is what it is. There's nothing wrong with pointing it out.

One Vandy senior WR/RB/1st round draft, etc taking on a team of frustrated, well coached, needing a bowl game, seniors playing last time at home...... As a bonus, bet it will be Dobbs big statement game to seal the deal. It wont be a close game, either way.. My money is on us beating them down.

Well coached?

Convenient that Dobbs' big statement game comes against Vandy, not any of the quality teams he played.

interesting.
