What if Bob Huggins were here?

You do realize you weren't alive when Huggins advanced farther than a Pearl team in the tournament, right?

I realize that a couple of seasons ago I was pissed when a Huggins coached team defeated my Duke Blue Devils to go into the Sweet 16. Meanwhile, Bruce Pearl's Tennessee Vols who had at one point been ranked number 1 stumbled through March and couldn't even get a point guard for a Sweet 16 loss to Louisville.

That's right, you're the Duke fan that thinks there are 4 quarters in a college basketball game. Now I remember.

Are you suggesting he was fired?

I'm saying that scoring points and having a fast-paced system is all well and fun, but in the postseason it's about in-game adjustments and defense. These are Pearl's two biggest flaws.

Not to mention the Suns fired Mike.

Are you bringing up the post from about 2 years ago? That was obvious sarcasm since the score was so low at the half. Get a grip.

Then he would have left two years ago when the West Virginia job opened up and left us high and dry like he did K-state.

You're bringing up a coach's tournament success from 15 years ago - 2 years ago is nothing.

The 2 year old post has no relevance whatsoever. I'm still waiting on you to prove to me that Pearl's better because he has more wins from the Sweet 16 forward.

This is the winner right here. Huggins was gone when West Virgina came calling.

Oh, I love the threads like this. No fan base eats its own like the Vol fans do.

And Billy Gillispie would dominate at UK
And Greg Oden would be the new NBA silhouette
And....

We can play that game if you'd like, but it doesn't change my opinion that Huggins would not have had any more success to this point than Pearl. And honestly, I think Pearl has had a larger financial impact on the program than Huggins could ever have dreamed of.
Yeah, because putting Beasley, Mayo, Walker, Gordon, and Smith on the floor together wouldn't have created a buzz that would have made fundraising easy.

Huggs was so desperate for the West Virginia job that he turned it down when Gale Catlett retired.

I would like to believe that group coached by Huggins would have advanced further than the sweet 16.

Huggins isn't that great IMO. I go to WVU and see the majority of their games. They consistently perform less than advertised. They got knocked out in the first round last year by Dayton btw lol. Year before that they didn't make the tourney. West Virginia isn't much better than we are right now - from seeing lots of both teams. We'll see how each team looks in March, but I don't see this WVU team getting past the S16 without some help(and nothing to do with Huggs).

PS - they play Purdue on Jan 1st if you want to see some pretty close comparison.

You sure about that?

No, you can't. Memphis has about 93 fans outside Shelby County.

I've lived in East Tennessee my whole life and I can't remember the last time I saw a Memphis fan (outside of a UT-UM game) other than a UT student from Memphis.

BTW - some days if I'm bored I'll argue just to argue.

No, Tennessee is more popular, although there are a lot more people than people in East TN realize who wear orange until Thanksgiving and then drag out the Memphis State blue except for a bowl game that live West of Nashville.

The only problem is that Tennessee fans become very apathetic about bball if they are not good, and even then they still can be (see Jerry Green years).

At least with the debate on Pearl and his coaching abilities (or lack thereof), at least it shows fans care again and want to have a successful program. Frustration with a team not playing to its potential is better than not caring at all
