What is the future of California?

I didn't want to put this in the SCOTUS thread because it's really not a federal issue.

I hadn't heard about this CA law until today when my wife sent me this link. To me it's just plain out and out state sanctioned theft that in the long run will drive apartment communities into ruin and out of the state. How can anyone support forcing landlords to refund a months rent to legally evicted tenants and cap rental increases?

Court Upholds Law Requiring Landlords Pay Rent To Evicted Tenants
Rent controls and capital controls are stupid decisions by stupid politicians. Not surprising the 9th circuit court upheld the appeal.
Here's what will happen as a result of this law. Monthly rent and deposits will increase to new tenants. The first and last month up front will expand to at least one more month. Fewer rental will be available as current landlords sell units as single family homes to people wanting to buy a residence. As supply decreases relative to demand, the price will increase up to the maximum allowable every year...year over year. Properties in high tourism areas will be converted to vacation rentals. Homelessness and transiently homed people will increase. The least desirable tenants (money, credit score, rental history, current circumstances, brief employment history) will be impacted the most.

You are spot on, this will end up hurting the very people the state government set out to help. Idiots.

Seems like all you hear about coming out of that state is high taxes, crazy cost of living, homelessness, etc.
What are the realistic expectations of a better future for California?

The state will become largely resident-poor. The nitwits for years have raided the water-rich areas further mid-north. Especially the areas of Bishop, Modesto, and I think Mammoth Lakes, to feed the desert cities farther south. And essentially squandered that water for recreational, agriculture (in areas God meant to be deserts) and beautification purposes, rather than common sense usage. So the greed, money-lusting practices, along with climate changes effects, are finally catching up to the stupidity. All of which go hand in hand with gross financial mismanagement. The pity is that even back in the 1960s, there were people pushing for desalination of seawater in lieu of draining piping water from distant rivers, lakes, and reservoirs farther north. They saw what was happening to places like the Salton Sea and warned what was coming if the current practice continued. But money lust, egoism, and just plain stupidity, as usual, trumped common sense.

Now, for you biased folks, Republican and Democrat conceit were equally responsible for the water rape and financial mismanagement. There were none innocent, no, not one. The state has a history of switching between parties in selecting governors. So for any who just want to point fingers out of fault-finding spite and political Equus excretion, use both hands, so you point at both sides and get it right. Best case scenario, Uber left version of Idiocracy. Worst case, desolate wasteland.

I would really like to see Cali break away from the extreme fringes and make common sense decisions about their resources or lack thereof. They should have broken their addiction to the colorado river when tech and scientific advancements allowed it. Desalination is a perfect fit for the state. Using the desert areas to build nuclear plants and/or solar arrays. California is the food basket for America. Their agricultural contributions are needed. We want Cali to remain strong and vibrant.

I agree, and hope it happens, despite not having much faith it will. Human stupidity being what it is. We've literally, willingly given away our independence. China practically owns our microchip producing. We have car lot, township, and mall built our once vast grain land away, and become dependent on Russian and Ukraine grain, given major auto manufacturing to Mexico, China and Japan. A large amount of our seafood is from China, is just a few to mention. In no small part by the greedy, self-serving politicians of both parties. If I was an enemy nation, I'd take advantage of this willful stupidity too.

It's not just red hats, it's their policies that's the problem. Yes, some places are beautiful there, while other places it's perfectly legal to poop in the streets, but you get threats of arrest for plastic straws. Most major cities threaten anyone trying to stop thieves more than the thieves, and you gotta watch for smash and grabs when you're shopping. They've passed a law banning any gas powered vehicles by 2030, I think, but just the other day were demanding people not to charge their cars because of overloading the electrical system. Let's not forget the politicians who threatened their voters with jail time during the shutdown, who were caught on camera doing exactly what they threatened against. There's tons more, and none of it, not one single bit has anything to do with Republicans. I say that to say this, California being disliked and made fun 9f isn't because of red hats, it's the Democrats running the place.

How long did you live there?

It's the big cities in California that push the leftist ideology. Just like Chicago imposes it's will on the rest of Illinois, New York city imposes it will on the rest of the empire state. City slickers love big government. Country and suburban people want to be left alone.
Which is why I'll never live in NY again, and I loved where I grew up

According to financial data, the top 1% of earners in New York City make in excess of $804,000 per year. In 2019, their personal income taxes accounted for 41% of the total income tax levied by the city.

I thought we needed the wealthy to pay their fair share. They lost 337,000 people in 2020, which is unsustainable and the ones that stay bare an even a greater tax burden.

Not sure if it matters. The wealthy just switch manufacturing to third countries and China for cheaper labor and higher personal profit anyway. Their loyalty is to their wallets, not their country. Long live capitalism, I suppose. Now with Apple and Amazon, and I think Starbucks employees voting to unionize, I expect those businesses to shift production similarly outside the USA. Apple is claiming they don't mind unionizing, but that song has been sung by others before, who left for overseas production.

Kalifornia, New York and Illinois all have one thing in common. None will ever see a dime of my hard earned money. I know they don't care, but I know it is a fact, and it also means I couldn't care less what happens to any of them.

Punishing drought? No end in sight? I have an idea! Let's get a multi-billion dollar decades long project to the one yard line and then appoint a "Coastal Commission" to pull the plug at the last minute. It's a no-win no-win! Nobody gets water and nobody gets jobs! And the environment is saved!... Except for all the lakes and rivers we're drawing down!

Joy for environmentalists as California blocks bid for $1.4bn desalination plant
