The SEC definitely does not suck. It's arguably the best conference in America. Anybody that doubts this, Duck or not, is delusional. The Pac-10 though is a very strong conference as well. Oregon can play with anybody in the country not named Alabama, don't let the game at Autzen confuse you... Stanford could easily run the table from here on out. Arizona is a Top 10 team, as Iowa found out first hand. At the end of the year, the Pac-10 could very easily wind up with 8 Bowl bound teams. Even 9 wouldn't SHOCK me but I don't expect to see it happen.
I agree. The PAC-10 is a very strong conference and the second best in the land in my opinion. However, I don't think Arizona is a legit top 10 team. I see 4 or so losses in their future.
Stanford? Well, I don't know what to expect out of Stanford.
Recruiting matters plenty. But I could easily post a dozen articles or analysis pieces written by non-Pac 10, non-Oregon types who argue that Oregon is the second best team in this country. I believe Oregon's #2 in the country right now. A lot of Vol fans on this board have said literally the same thing. It's not a crazy position at all, in fact it's becoming a mainstream one (Thirty seconds ago I heard an ESPN commentator on the KSU/UN game say "Alabama in the driver seat for the national title race but the Oregon Ducks are riding shotgun.")
Again, I agree. I personally have Oregon #2, and Ohio State #3 right now.
As for recruiting rankings? I think some Ducks fans are insecure in that area, so they attempt to convince themselves recruiting rankings are irrelevant as a mechanism of security. What they don't understand is that if Oregon does somehow manage to win the National title, they'll be the first to do so without elite recruiting classes.
Alabama has a better defense then us. Yes. This Duck fan agrees 100%. However, any reasonable college football observer has to agree that a team that ranks in the Top 15 in the country in Scoring Defense, has given up 7 points in the second half all year and ZERO points in the 4th Quarter and does all of this with an offense that ranks 108th in the nation in TOP (i.e., the defense is on the field for a llllloooonnnnnggggg time every game) is a perfectly reasonable, evidence based argument for the defense being underrated.
Well, the primary reason the Ducks are ranked top 15 in total defense is due to shutting out New Mexico and Portland State. One is a FCS program, and the other very well may be the worst FBS program in collegiate football. The Ducks gave up 31 to Stanford and ASU respectively.
The Ducks are ranked 89th in TOP I believe. I could be wrong though.
I completely disagree with this statement. I watched the entire Auburb/SC game and Newton's the real deal.
Agreed. Anyone who's actually watched Cam play know's he's the real deal. Has absolutely nothing to do with conference affiliation.
Again, disagree. Harris is a monster and came up clutch time and time again in the Stanford game. He is also the national leader, statistically, in Punt Returns. But Peterson reminds me an awful lot of Charles Woodson which I can't say about Harris.
Cliff Harris is probably my second favorite Duck after LaMichael James. He's been productive, and he's been clutch. But again, the bulk of his return yards came against New Mexico. To this point I think Peterson has been a little bit more dynamic, and defensively, he's flat out better. I expect to see both to be playing on Sunday's though.
Anyhow, I commend you for being objective. I enjoy talking to fans with a little perspective.
