What people around here are Ignoring in the QB debate

The coaches will decide--and Jones will be accountable for his decision. One factor Jones must consider is how much he wants to try to win this year--say, with Worley--versus giving the younger guys some/more experience. And what if he starts Worley and the Vols are floundering after 5 games? How patient will the coaches--and the fans--be with a QB who is not playing at a high level? Not very: The fans apparently pushed Jones to start Peterman against florida last year, which was a terrible decision. What if Worley starts for say, three or four games, but then another QB is played, and he struggles, too? Then what? It is going to be a trick situation.

We have group of young QB with different skill sets, eventually one will separate himself from the pack. This thread has been an entreating read but I see factions developing supporting this guy or that guy and that creates controversy . What the coaches see is competition and competition is a great motivator. The starter may not be named until a couple of weeks before game day, so i'm gonna sit back, enjoy VN, and let CBJ and coach Jake sort out the QB conundrum. One thing for sure is no one is right if every body's wrong! :birgits_giggle:

I keep seeing people post this.
Do you actually believe that Jones made that decision because of fan pressure?
If he did then he is an idiot.
For the record I don't think there is any way in hell Butch put Peterman in that game just because Cletus Bugtussle down in Slackjaw Holler was pissed off.

I keep hearing 1st team and 2nd team defense, but I thought they were more of a hybrid grouping. Can anyone give the split of 1's and 2's on each group defending against each QB drive? It may be Dobbs played against 4 1's and 7 2's and it was called the "2nd team." That would be a different story in my book.

Your argument is futile. The Dobbies will never agree with you. The Fergies will go "oh hell yes". The Whirlies will say "so what". The Nathanites, if they exist, will say he did as good as any of them.

I believe we have 4 pretty good QBs that can compete. None are world beaters, but should manage the offense that we have now. Riley needs some polish, but he can be better than all of them. I believe the staff threw the crazy blitzes at him to teach him a lesson. Did they throw the blitzes against other QBs? I also believe that Dobbs can turn into an excellent QB with more experience and better weapons around him. This season JMO is that Worley will win more games for us. My 2 cents. FWIW.

Nice. :lolabove:

I wish I knew how to go back and look at threads from last year and the week leading up to the UF game. I would guarantee the same fans that were fired up to see Peterman start were the same ones blaming Jones when it failed.

It's easy to be a fan. You can change your mind every minute and not be held accountable for anything.

Nobody wants to "write him off for good" but people have no real reason to be backing a QB that they've only seen high school film on. To add to that the showing that was closest to game day experience that he's had he didn't perform and you're still shouting his name to the roof tops. It literally makes no logical sense.

Please feel free to explain.

He's a Vol?

You have 3 kids that have taken an SEC snap and one who hasn't at the QB position. Dobbs, Worley, and Peterman have all faced 1st team SEC defenses with All Americans and candidates for All Americans at the snap blowing snot bubbles, yelling, and wanting to tear their heads off. Its not like UT's 1st D who have not that mindset no matter what going against our O. You'll not see Ferguson start over kids who have taken an SEC snap unless he is just heads and shoulders better than them and that has not been reported by anybody as occurring. I think Worley starts hands down and Peterman needs to transfer if he ever wants to see the field again.

Try this thread. In the OP it has who faced who and the outcomes.

http://www.volnation.com/forum/tennessee-vols-football/217186-qb-drive-unit-comparisons.html

When the 1st team O faced the 2nd team D, the O scored 100% of the time. No matter who was leading them.

When the 2nd team O faced the 2nd team D, the O scored 0% of the time (besides the Dobbs botched snap the he ran in).

Worley and Peterman both lead the 1st team O to score against the 1st team D.
Against the 1st team D, Worley lead them on a FG drive. A passing TD drive. And he had the long run that set up the 1 yard TD by Hurd
To me, that matters little, because Dobbs was as sharp as he could be, and as the coaches said last year...Dobbs gives them that extra dynamic (of being able to run the ball, when called for). The game is slowing down for him, and it will be extremely hard for Worley to beat him out in the fall.

I could see CBJ going with a 2 Qb rotation, initially...so we aren't giving up that mobility element Dobbs gives us. But, it would give Worley a chance to show he's an SEC caliber QB. If he's just a game manager, then Dobbs will get the job.

This is exactly how it was.

fergy fans have to stop being delusional and come to this realization. it would be absolutely stupid for Butch to even consider otherwise

Worley is number 1. That's a fact. Ferguson and Dobbs are 2 and 2a whichever order you want to put it. We'll debate this all summer until the fall because it's Vol football. If there were no passion this site would be as dull as the Utah State threads.

I mentioned this possibility/tactic in another QB thread and KBvol and others jumped on me for even suggesting it.

Certainly didn't intend to "jumpon you" for suggesting it. I simply gave the opinion that Riley earned the right to take team 1 reps with Worley since all 4 had been taking equal reps earlier in the Spring.

Butch said it had been a pure, open competition all Spring and to say that he just randomly gave Ferguson first team reps seemed to imply that he didn't deserve them when most, if not all the reports I read and heard was that Riley had been playing really well outside of the occasional interception and earned his reps.

Apologies if my response came across otherwise. Enjoy debating with you and most of the posters on here. We all want the best for the program. Only poster I have issue with is the guy from Lexington, Ky who's posted bold faced lies on here regarding Butch's take on Riley. That I can't stand.

Wouldn't it be nice (not realistic) to play 2 scrimmage games prior to the regular season to evaluate players vs another team besides the #2 defense in an O/W game.

Exactly but since some of us are keeping Fergy in the race, we are wrong and the media is lying to us.

I agree with another poster that with our schedule we'll need 2 or possibly 3 QB's. The defense is where the story will be told, if we have a winning season for a change or at least play .500 ball and get to a bowl game, Butch should get credit for a job well done.
