What "popular" singer says or bands you think are overrated or terrible

And Chris Cornell? Tool? DMB?

Apparently we need to define the term "overrated" for some people.

No one is overrated, everyone just has a different taste in music. Many in here have mentioned Taylor Swift, she's worth $250 million and is the first person in history to have each of her first 3 albums sell 1 million albums in their first week. She's huge amongst a certain demographic.

Bieber has sold about 100 million albums and his VEVO page has over a BILLION views. Do I like him?? NO but those number don't say overrated.

Kenny Chesney, is worth over $250 million and had 29 number one hits. Many in here have said he's overrated

Just because you don't like an artist doesn't mean they're overrated it's just not your flavor

Is it fair (to actual artists) to call them artists if they are really performers with no lyric or songwriting credits?

Not sure how you can overrate a modern pop singer. Most people know what they are.

I will not deny his business acumen and I even say he is a good rapper but I never understood how people have Jay-Z in GOAT rap territory.

Some view Tupac as one of the greatest artists ever. I view his music as garbage but would never consider his fans fools. They like what they like, I like what I like.

I could probably name 30-40 bands I could listen to all day long, the beatles are not in that group for me.

I can remember back in the late seventies on the king biscuit flour hour, they were interviewing Greg Allman. They asked him why they started the band. His reply was " they just liked jammin and were tired of that beatles $hit.

You're not understanding. Anybody that believes the Beatles are overrated or terrible is an ignorant fool. I'm not a huge fan, but I doubt that any other band had as much influence on the evolution of the genre. Overrated? Terrible?

by decade

60's the beatles, bob dylan
70's grateful dead, KC and the sushine band
80's duran duran, Kenny Rogers, lee greenwood
90's metallica, reba mcentire, van hagar
00's nickelback,
10's taylor swift, beiber

Aren't you just listing what you don't like?

You're still just arguing a subjective matter. I think it would be next to impossible to say they are overrated from a music/production standpoint but both Lennon and McCartney are listed near the top of almost every "greatest songwriters" list which is crazy to me. I'd argue, from a songwriting angle only, they are overrated.

Actually Chesney is a perfect example. Overrated would be a financially successful artist with lots of hits, But really isn't all that talented. I would rate Chesney very low on talent. Average voice, but distinct. Not a prolific musician or songwriter.

Absolutely. Beatles are actually underrated because the majority of people don't know how influential they are and were. Prolific song writers and innovators.

Crazy? Look at their anthology both as a band and then indvidually. Look at how many people have performed their songs. And sit down and work out Blackbird on guitar where you can perform it, and give me a call. You are showing yourself to be a fool.

I could/should have been more specific and said lyrically, I acknowledged that I didn't think they were overrated from a musicianship standpoint.

You are showing yourself to be a fool.

But glad you can keep acting like this is a completely objective discussion. Fun talk.

What makes the songwriters that have written a boatload of #1 songs and have influenced musicians for decades over rated?

Not trying to be mean, just trying to understand.

Trust me, I don't take it as being mean because I'm well aware that I'm in the minority with my opinion but I just find them to be overrated from a lyrical/songwriting point of view.

They both wrote a million songs and more than a few of them are absolutely genius and beautifully written. But they also spent the first half of their time as a band writing perfectly fine pop songs but nothing I would call special. Then the second half was hit or miss to me with some great stuff and then some with incoherent lyrics that, because it was the Beatles, gets called deep, or experimental, or some other such vague but complimentary moniker. Don't care if the inspiration was drugs or a picture your son brought home from school, there's no scenario where a line like "where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies" should be considered genius.

Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers, Abbey Road, White Album....I don't care what else they did, those 5 albums can go up against any bands best 5, IMO.

As far as the semantic argument about "overrated"....let's just use the word "over-appreciated" and then we can move on.

I think the Beach Boys are over-appreciated. I love Pet Sounds. Top 5 album all time, IMO. Almost all of the rest of it is pop BS.

That's kind of how I feel about Guns N' Roses. One album wonder in '88 with Appetite for Destruction. They mostly just did covers after that (although I know a lot of people liked Use Your Illusion with Don't Cry and November Rain).

Chris Cornell is overrated?
Likely one of the most underrated singer/songwriters of this generation.
You're a f-ing moron.

Calm the "f" down, moron. You may think "one of the most underrated", I believe I'd rather hear cats fornicating than listen to his work. Your mileage may vary, and I really don't give one single damn.

That's a matter of personal taste and it's fine that yours sucks. The impact Soundgarden and Nirvana had on rock in the early to mid 90's doesn't need defending.

I've got no issue with the impact they had. None whatsoever. You'll never see me say they didn't. It's. Their. Voices.
