What schools will come after Josh Heupel?

Well after Kiffin left in the middle of the night like we were a two-bit mistress, we get freaked out that every coach is going to leave us.

We had the same threads about Dooley, Butch and Pruitt. The difference is that this time Huepel is actually a prize other teams will want.

That doesn’t mean he’ll leave. Just that we have some ptsd to work through.
He's not leaving anytime soon.

After what he did to Missouri because of Dinks comment…well it would surprise me if he was petty enough to pull a Game of Thrones esque revenge scheme

Hooman beans are of the genre pinto. Pintos seem to be a nice meal, but they make a big rumble in the belly of life. The gas and mud that exits as a result is nasty stuff. The horse of the same namesake, looks nice, and are nice, they're smart, just don't make them mad. They will remember and act on what they remember. Heupel is a hooman bean, and if you know what Quark said about this species of sentients, it's no surprise that Heupel can be petty.

Go Vols! Stomp Oklahoma when the opportunity is present.

Everybody loves JH now in large part because of the year UT is having. He caught lightening in a bottle partly because of his and his assistant's abilities but also because of the young men who remained in the program and those who elected to transfer in to the unknown. I hope and pray that we have continued growth and success, but if our expectations aren't met will Volnation turn on him or trust in his process as we have learned to do this year? I think that he likes it here and as long as he feels the support from the fans and community he will remain. I just don't get the sense that he is here to move on to something "better" but if things go south and he feels his support waning that would likely be the impetus for him to leave. All that being said, I just want to see continued support and trust in him and his staff even if there come some leaner times down the road. But we need to pay the man, not to buy his loyalty but to reward him for the job he has done.

why would he go anywhere else in college football when he can win championships where he is? Also, we can pay him whatever he wants

Why did Lincoln Riley jump from Oklahoma to USC?… Because he is an alpha competitor that knows he has a better path to national championships at USC….

There are only a hand full of schools that can offer that sort of pathway. Oklahoma is not one of them…
Yes they are.

Lincoln Riley went to the CFP 3 times in a row 2017 - 2019. Before him Stoops played in 4 BCS Title games and won one. 2000, 2003-4, and 2008.

Yes, VN would turn on Huepel if we take a big step backwards. It’s a what have you done for me lately business

Even last year, Heupel made Tennessee football fun to watch again. It was never fun to watch under Pruitt, very rarely under Jones or Dooley.

Not saying some GM wouldn’t try it, but I personally don’t think the CJH offense would translate to the NFL very well.
Kliff Klingsberry od Arizona.....sort of kind of the same philosophy. HE WONT go to the NFL. Defenses dont want to spend 42 minutes on the field. They dont have 2nd and 3rd strings in the NFL

I think the situation for the Oklahoma coach changes a lot when they join the SEC. Riley benefitted from a weaker conference schedule. As an SEC program, I am not sure OU has any advantage over UT except the oil money, which isn’t helping TAMU.

They were. Oklahoma will be even less relevant with the move to the SEC in 2025. My point is that there are only a hand full of programs that have a conducive schedule, recruiting base etc it takes to make the CFP every year. The SEC is going to be a dog fight for the foreseeable future. While Tennessee is capable of some level of success; other programs are in a much more conducive environment to compete for and win CFP’s every year.

hash marks are for reference only aren't they. Have nothing to do with where the different players line up do they? I think they say he is inside the hash marks or he is outside the hash marks. Nobody cares where? No rule is there?

Agree 100 %.. He is a college coach . He is a developer.. He is a offense master . And his scheme would not translate. Plus i believe he just flat out loves college football more
Agreed. A college coach is a teacher and leader. An NFL Coach is more like a business manager.

Maybe more money doesn't always mean a better job. If CJH was scraping by on 5 figures a year (like me) I could understand the push to pay him more. How much money does one man need to be sold out to a university and it's fan base? How much for him to say "There is no ""better job"?
I just hope that whenever Heupel has the inevitable bad season (it WILL happen at some point) that we don’t make life miserable for him. THAT is when being a college coach stinks.

Tennessee already came after him, got him, and White will keep him. He is Danny Whites guy.
I wonder if Heupel even hesitated an instant before saying yes to the UT offer. And I wonder how early on in the search he realized he was being considered. I would love to know the backstory but like all coaching searches all we have is speculation. The conversation between White and Heupel when White told Heup that he had accepted the AD job at Tennessee would have been most interesting to listen in on wouldn’t it?

Agreed. We won’t be able to keep Danny White either if we don’t give him what he needs to retain Huepel and pay fair “Market Value” .
if he makes the playoffs and gets some 7-9mil offers we’d better be prepared to match that and then some or they will all leave for better Jobs.

Idk but I have a feeling Huepel will be patient and be well payed and likely stay for a long time on Rocky Top. Danny White Gets it done
UT has their man and I suspect he will get a ridiculous extension at the end of the season. Doubt he goin' anywhere anytime soon. If OK wanted him, they would have hired him two years ago. Now that he's proven he can play wid da big boys, they prolly kickin' dust. How's that Brent Venables workin out for ya, OK?

Not just reference.

If a runner is tackled inside the hash marks, the ball is spotted and snapped where the runner went down.

If the runner is tackled outside the hashmark or goes out of bounds, the ball is moved to and snapped at the hashmark.

After every win we have this thread I swear. Lol

We were pretty much insulated from this issue for 32 years. Then came the Lame Train and we've got to stare poverty directly in the face. Now we know what it's like to be outside and desperate like so many programs every year. We still scared of the great depression cause we went thru it.

Why on earth would you leave a situation where you know your AD very well, the whole school Administration supports you and you know they will financially support you/your program, to go off into an unknown situation?

Odd notion these days but sometimes the long term knowing outweighs the short term financial gains. The grass is not always greener when you dwell in a giant pasture of high clover.

absolutely, I have my own ideas about how it went but just guessing of course.
I can see JH being White‘s first choice, but White is very smart business man. He knew how the fans reacted to Schiano and he could not risk that. I think he slow walked it a litte, talked to couple coaches he knew would turn it down, and make it sort of appear that no top coaches were interested.

Would not doubt he even told JH his plan because I believe he wanted JH all along. It just seemed when it was announced things happened very quickly, and fell in place rather smoothly. Some fans were not happy, but overall we thought it was best we could get at the time.

You can see now how level headed and in control JH is, White knew he needed that with his transition, and the problems Pruitt created. He knew JH was a good fit, and he knew JH would work his butt off and forever be appreciative of the opportunity he gave him.

of course that is just one old man’s opinion

I dont think you have o worry about it. Once we get into the playoffs, irrespective of what happens there, they will redo his contract I guarantee you.

I dont think he will want to leave yet anyway because the hardest part is done already and he has Milton next year and Nico coming in. Besides coach pay, it would have to be a place with crazy NIL like we have to get some top recruits before the team "deserves" them.

He has a place here that can build a dynasty in the heart of the SEC. A rich storied program with tons of resources and absolutely rabidly fanatical fans,

Do you honestly think with their history together that Danny White is going to let Heupel even THINK about leaving if it is a matter of money?

Where I am much more concerned is assistants

This. And Heupel is a genuine, down to Earth dude who seems to love it in Knoxville and loves the culture of Rocky Top. He doesn't seem like the type who dreams of the NFL over college. And he has a peak college job.
