To say that there is some doubt about whether CDD can ever win a championship at UT is a gross understatement.

There's also doubt that he can ever win the SEC East.

Instead, many here and in other UT circles, feel the best he can do is win may 10 games in his third year at UT, but never any more than that. In the meantime, many concede that he will help recruiting, but that he can not recruit as well as CLK and company. So, even his recruiting upside is limited versus the trajectory we were on.

Before anyone starts claiming that I don't want to Vols to win, let me clarify in saying that we all want the Vols to win.

Yet, is winning and restoring 'mediocrity' at UT over the next 6 or 7 years better for the Vols program, or would simply seeing Dooley repeat his LA Tech record at UT over the next two years get a proven coach on the Hill faster?

For Dooley to win? What an idiotic question "what is best, us to lose or win"....

To give you my opinion I think he will suprise a lot of us. I don't really have a reason for it it's just a feeling. His last name does speak for its self so im sure he knows a little about winning games.

With every passing year that UT hits the 5-7 win mark we fall another year behind, if Dooley wins at that rate for the next 3 years and is fired for it, UT will have a huge hole to climb out of...I'd rather us not be sorry for the next 10 years, so lets hope that Dooley and crew get this thing rolling in the right direction.

Yeah, it would probably be best if Dooley lost...What?? I knew from the moment X was hired he would scamper back to USC when that job opened; I just never anticipated it would be after one year. CDD isn't in that tough of a spot right now IMO: the fanbase knows that '10 will be a rough year no matter the coach which buys him an extra year to stockpile recruits for '11 an on. By then we'll most likely have 3 straight top 10 recruiting classes and ready to play with the big boys again.

any answer that makes me choose UT losing just isn't going to happen

I think is the stupidest thread I have seen on here yet. Especially coming from someone who has been here for awhile. This staff hasn't even gotten the kids on the field yet and your already saying we'll never be more than mediocre. Sad...

Why don't we calm our Class-A personalities down and give Dooley a chance. He'll either make it or not. He has the right attitude so sit back and relax a little.

It's ignorant to assume he's going to launch us into mediocrity. only Ms Cleo knows how good he's gonna be mon!

Further proof that you don't have to be that bright to get an MBA.

It was 4-8 at LA Tech, so 5-7 will be an improvement.

5-7 is not a bad prediction for this season. If he follows that with 7-5 in 2011 and then 9-3 in 2012 that the type of trajectory that likely keeps him employed.

Here's how I think that trend continues. From 2013-2015, the Vols get one 10-win season, one with 9 and one with 8 wins. By then, those seasons may feel good enough to continue the Dooley era. I'm really not sure how the years ahead will affect our expectations.

But, is that really what Vol fans should expect from our football program?

your first 5k posts on VN told us that's what we needed to expect. Trying to act like the big boy realist now just isn't going to fly.

This is like the people that say they want Obama to fail...I don't care for him and didn't vote for him but in general what is good for him (in this case CDD) is what is good for the country as a whole (in this case the vol faithful).

Okay, I'll play.

We don't know all the details of the coaching search but it seems obvious that CDD was not the first candidate. So if we had to make a 'reach' hire to get him, what makes you think that if he's gone in 2 years after 2 losing seasons that we'll suddenly have a top notch coach knocking down the door to be coach at UT. UT took a gamble on CLK and now they've taken a gamble on CDD.

If in 2 years CDD is fired for running UT into the ground they'll have to take an even bigger chance on another coach (because the job will be less attractive then it is now) and we'll all bemoan the fact that whoever they get can't compete for titles before he even coaches a game and we hope he sucks for 2 years and is fired. Rinse and repeat.

UT winning is better than UT losing. I'd rather him average 8 or 9 wins a year for 5 to 10 years then run the program further into the ground.

I'm not totally sold on Dooley but I also think it's possible he's an upgrade over Kiffin and I respect the fact that rather than following Saban to UA he decided to become a head coach at a smaller school. We'll see how it goes but championships aren't out of the question, especially if the Wilcox hire pans out.
