This is some solid logic, except why not take it all the way down to Panama? Then we own the canal outright and the border with Colombia is very small ~100 miles.

Added bonus: When we legalize drugs, much easier importation from Colombia. Better yet, I bet the states of Costa Rica and Nicaragua would be pretty fertile.

I am going to get a little tangential here (because this thread was heading in a straight path anyway...)

If you feel that the American system of government, way of life, and, ultimately, fundamental values are truly the best in the world. Then, would being upset with said country for being a little imperialistic, colonialist, and/or spreading their dogma to the world be illogical?

My girlfriends little sister in Texas goes to a school where they still have textbooks from the 1970's and not enough for the whole classroom so they have to share.

My point was, helping our youth get in school and get an education. I know that is hard because it is a personal responsibility, but over the past 8 years, it has been the least of this countries interest to solve the education problems. I never said give money to the poor. Did I? Should I read my post again? Okay....uh, no I never said that.

The government should only do what the local government can't, shouldn't or will not do. I think the state of Texas or the local government SHOULD be able to pony up for new text books. The real question is why aren't they?

How about making everyone who gets any form of government assistance take regular drug tests. fail, you must be retested within 48 hours. Fail or don't show up, your assistance is dropped. Go to the end of the line and reapply. And all forms should be in English only. It's the national language. Learn it. If you are a jackass in school, your teacher has the right to bust your ass. Kids MUST learn respect and discipline. They certainly aren't getting it at home very often and schools aren't allowed. If you get injured while comitting a crime, sucks for you. No lawsuits allowed for that.

EXACTLY. After one year on assistance you need to have a job. If not you go to work for the city for free. If you do not you lose your assistance the end. This would only apply to those capable of working.

So tell the parents to get involved. Tell them to raise a ruckus and get the local gov't to do something. If they don't react then vote the bums out and put someone in place that can. Until they exhaust all options there should be no yelling at the fed gov't for lack of help.

The sad part is that will never happen in the communities you are describing. The local gov't gets their apathy from their constituents. If the people don't care then where's the incentive to change anything?

You must have missed the whole "No Child Left Behind" thing.

If you want to improve education, turn it into a capitalist system rather than a government monopoly. Get rid of the federal department of education disband the two large teachers' unions and force educators and schools to compete the way any other business has to compete.
