What's really going on with Jannah Tucker?

NARED needs to become more Physical and Tenacious on defense, to quote a ESPN recruiting analyst. I agree.

At this point in the season, I don't think that she lacks physicality. She's shown that she's afraid to fight for rebounds or aggressively contest shots. I think she needs to learn how to play smart defense and use her height and wingspan more and not foul with her hands. She has the potential to be a very effective defender along the same mold as Jasmine Jones.

Next year I can see the 5 starters Reynolds, Carter, DeShields, Nared and Graves. Or, Reynolds, Carter, DeShields, Graves and Russell. However, Graves at the four is problematic. She doesn't play the 4 well. Jones, Cooper, Middleton, Moore will get most of the back up minutes. Dunbar, Tucker, Jackson, will get minutes as they develop parts of their games. Dunbar needs to improve her rebounding. Tucker just needs to get healthy.
WHAT!! Really?

My predictions based on precedents.

Starting line-ups will change many times over the course of the season and may not stabilize until the midway stretch of the SEC schedule.

Injuries etc. will result in the team not being as deep as projected in an ideal world.

Starting line-up will not matter as much as the finishing line-up.

Holly will put the players on the floor who work hard on both ends, whoever that may be.

Barring injury and a dedicated off-season of physical conditioning and skill work, Nared will be very had to keep off the floor. She has height, athleticism, quickness, and knack for making plays. For all those doubting the Holly's recruiting acumen, Nared will be the player that should inspire some serious re-calibration.

I'd like to see her starting at SG and Diamond at SF. Carter brings a lot to the table, but a scorer's mentality is not one of them. If she could learn to be a more effective PG, it would be good to see her move over snd run the offense.

Who Nared at SG?

If there was no Diamond, then I think SF would be Jaime's natural position. Since Diamond will have that spot nailed down, then SG is the next closest to her natural position.

If she spends her career just as Diamond's sub at SF playing for 10-15 minutes a game, then I think it's a wasted opportunity for her and the team.

There's no way in HE** you put Jaime at the two guard. She's got good speed, but she's not quick enough to take a guard off the bounce. Or guard a quick guard. Not to mention she's strongest when she's shooting 12ft or closer. It would make no sense at all to have her there with Bash graduating next yr. She would help with the shortage of post players. Plus she played the 4/5 in high school and 3-5 on her aau team.

This. She is a terrible 3 point shooter, but has shown she can use her size get physical inside and fight for rebounds. With the ridiculous depth Tennessee will have on the perimeter next season and virtually none inside, it makes absolutely no sense to play Nared at guard....

The discussion above does not include the type of defense played against the LVs next year. Injuries aside they will definitely have the ability to adjust. Similarly the discussion does not include the defenses played by the LVs.

For example, if the opposition is packing it in - who do you want on the parameter?

And for example, if the LVs are playing man or 2-3 zone . When would you want your two best perimeter defenders on the floor.

An aside - Remember that player who almost came to LVs twice but went to Ga Tech. Looking at her stats for the year one can wonder about having to take 20+ shots a game while being doubled-teamed and hitting less than 30% of many, many threes. I mention that because the LVs will have offensive
threats at five positions.

The Lady Vols next season will be an elite team if Russell is healthy, and plays just above average. Her 6-6 frame in the middle will be enough to intimidate, and alter shots.

To be honest I don't think teams will pack in all the time. You have such a proven player like DeShields that there is now way you leave her unguarded on the perimeter. Jordan is starting to assert herself more on the offensive end. And Draya gains any ounce of confidence then she would be deadly from the outside. So next year it will be more pick your poison with this team.

On defense we lose two of our weakest defenders on the team and gain back our best defensive player of the team in Jones. Lose an inside presence of Izzy, but get a 6-6 Russell inside. So with whomever comes into the game there shouldn't be a drop off in defensive intensity. Everyone on the team are sound defenders, except Dunbar and Middleton which would the weakest of the bunch.

I'm not suggesting we play her at guard, but to say Nared is a terrible 3 point shooter is incorrect. She has a lot of range in her shot and showed that frequently in the recruiting process.

True, she's 8-31 from 3 this season, but that is not typical of her game.

It's funny, all the criticizms of Nared and other returning players ... sounds much like what people were saying about Cierra and Ariel at the beginning of this year and look at the seasons they had. Not everyone is going to walk onto a college campus and be the dominating player they were in high school because the game is faster and opponents are stronger and wiser. Sure you have your DeShields that can come in but they are not the norm. The thing everyone needs to remember is that the ladies develop as a team and find a role that fits "the team". In my opinion DeShields is a guard and the line up next year will be 3 guards that can all handle the ball (DeShields, Reynolds, Carter) with Russell and Graves inside. Graves roll for 3 years has been to rebound and play defense and scoring as a 3rd or 4th option in the play but as a senior, i think you will see her expand her game just like Cierra has this year.

The key next season will be 6-6 Mercedes Russell in the middle, along with Graves. These two players should dominate on the boards next season. Nared also has the size to be a rebounder as well, she just needs to be more tenacious.

I think the greatest impact new player will be Diamond. Her play outside will open up the lanes and the inside game will flourish. Our outside game will also be greatly improved. 2015 will be the best year in sometime.

No doubt DD will have a huge impact next season. What I think FP was referring to is that Russell is still somewhat of an unknown next year because of her injuries and operations this year. We all expect for DD to be outstanding next year. The unknown factor will be how good will Russell be. That's why I also think the Russell will be key to the Lady Vols run to a possible NC.
We would still be very good without MR but with her healthy the final four would be my lowest expectation.

I think Cooper will come in college ready. Has everyone seen her workout tape on YouTube?

I watched it, quite impressive. It's not easy to come out of HS and play the point for a top college team. But if anyone can it will be Cooper. It will be interesting to see how Holly handles it.
