What's the Deal with the USC Attraction Factor?!?

I'm not in L.A. but in the Bay Area which is where I'm originally from. It's beautiful but I must admit that I'm San Francisco-born and now I can't afford to live there so I live on the outskirts. After graduating from UTK in 2004, I had a job opportunity in Knoxville but I got homesick. Came back to Knoxville in 2015 to submit my portfolio final for my graduate degree. Knoxville beautiful in the fall/winter but you can't beat Cali weather.

A lot of recruits within 200 miles. Great weather. NIL deals that could be unsurpassed. Easy conference.

Taxes, crime, cost of living, insane traffic congestion, smog, and crazy people. (I lived there for 8 years. Scenery, geography, entertainment, and climate are great though.)
LA is an armpit with a good view and stable climate.

I loved visiting SoCal, but I would not want to live there. I have an aunt and uncle who recently moved from Cali to Nevada because they could no longer handle the cost of living (they're getting to be quite old). And they weren't even coastal, they lived inland around San Bernadino.

That said, if you're making millions, that place sells itself. Especially with the recruiting base he just walked into.

Charleston, SC has all of that for a much lower tax rate and a far cheaper state to live in. Not to mention that’s the smallest ass on a woman I’ve seen in a while lol
Charleston is my favorite town, but it ain’t cheap to live on the Peninsula. Far from it.

Remember, for our purposes, living in SoCal for 4-5 years on someone else’s nickel ,aka, scholarship and NIL wouldn’t be a bad deal for 18-22 year old guy.

Another thing to remember is that Riley recruits a lot of SoCal/West Coast kids anyway. Spencer Rattler is from Scottsdale, this Malachi Nelson kid who just decommitted from OU is from Los Angeles and I think there's little doubt where he's going.

I totally see why he did it. In fact now that he's made the move I'm surprised it was as big of a surprise as it was (to me included). He wants no part of the SEC, he didn't sign up to be a head coach in the SEC, and he gets to recruit against UCLA, Cal, Arizona, Arizona St, etc. for kids that he already recruits anyway. The only other recruiter he has to worry about is Cristobal/Oregon.

This is all true and now that Cristobal is probably going to Miami it was a great move for him.

But you can beat Cali taxes and cost of living! If it were the 1960s, I'd probably want to live in California, too, but in 2021, you can make $100k plus in the Bay Area and still have to live like you're poor. In Tennessee, you can live like a king on that.

I admit, though, if I got a job offer in Miami or Tampa, I'd jump on it! Nice weather, low taxes, reasonable cost of living. Florida > California.

If you've ever spent a Saturday or Sunday afternoon on The Strand from Santa Monica to Venice Beach you well understand why 18/22 year olds love the place.

I'm fortunate to live in an affordable Bay Area county. If I was just one county west, it's a different world. So I'm good driving into the City on weekends to hang with family.

Of course there's also this from LA... I've visited a few times. You couldn't pay me enough to live there.
